i have the phobia of taxedermy too! i have always thought i was alone. most of my friends and family have witnessed me having a panick attack at some point after seeing a mounted animal unexpectedly. i can remember this starting when i was 4. my parents took me to a company christmas party at her boss' house where he led us to a closet opened the door..and there was a jumping taxedermied fox or wolf ,i cant remember, about a foot from my face! fish and birds dont bother me but anything larger with fur and eyes does. its mainly the eyes especially if it is behind me or above my head. im also afraid of wax museums. this phobia has controlled my life for as long as i can remember. i cant go past my in- laws kitchen, i cant go to certain restaraunts, shop in certain stores, relax on vacation without having to send my husband in to "make sure the coast is clear". i went to a flea market today where i seen a deer head and ran away with everyone staring at me like i was crazy. i need help for this!!! im not satisfied saying its necrophobia because my dad hunts and im not at all afraid of dead animals or people, only taxidermied animals or wax people.

To be honest I think Taphophobia is quite rational, I wouldn't say it was a phobia at least. You wouldn't say being scared of an axe murderer was a phobia, no matter how unlikely it is to happen.

For myself, I have a phobia of balloons. Globophobia, apparently.

I am very coulrophobic, but only of "normal" looking clowns, the kind that get hired to go to kids' birthday parties, make balloon animals, and make people laugh. The clowns that are at haunted houses trying to be scary don't bother me in the slightest, in fact I really like them. When I see a "normal" clown (even in a picture, or on TV) I start to hyperventalate, I get light headed, I feel like I can't move, my chest feels like it's tightening like I'm having a heart attack. Even knowing that *most* "normal" clowns are really just ordinary people trying to make a buck making people laugh I'm still terrified of them. I even have a friend who worked as a clown during high school, and even knowing it was him in the outfit didn't help me to calm down when I saw him in it. I think the reason for my fear is that I read Stephen King's IT when I was about 8 years old and the clown in that was supposed to be a "normal" looking one, at least from a distance, until there were no adults around and IT could kill the children.

I am one of those odd people afraid of cotton balls. There is really no reason why. I used to simply dislike them but since people know this and harass me with them, I am scared! The noise they make causes me to be nauseaous and I get chills.

@Maria (<a href='#comment-4367' rel="nofollow">55</a>): Yeah I am so afraid of taxidermy myself. Its because of an experience in a meseum when I was 10 where there was nothing out of the ordinary in the hallway but as soon as you went around the corner there was a cougar in a leaping position. Now I am afraid of any taxidermy whether it is squirrels, birds, no matter what. I just can't handle being in a room with them. I freeze and won't move any closer once I see them. So if I have to be there I have to be led around them by a friend while I close my eyes. I now try to avoid museums and also have to sit with my back to them whenever I go to restaurants that have them there.

I am so glad to find this site and read how many people have this taxidermy fear. Mine sounds exactly like everyone elses. I am petrified when i am suprised by them, i feel like a shot of terror rips through my body paralyzing me. its almost like a horror movie. i have tried to figure out what im scared of and i cant really put my finger on it. I dont really think they will attack me or come alive, i just dont want to be near them. I think the worst part is their eyes. i feel like they are staring at me no matter where i go. i wanted to see if anyone else had a fascination with looking at them from a safe distance. i will spend hours online looking at taxidermy sites but i have to move slowly through the pictures and i like the pictures small, if anything pops up like full size i get a mini panic attack. i also get into the mindset sometimes that they are behind me when im home and i have to look around. its actually nice to know im not the only one. my therapist said that she has never heard of this phobia. i think mine started at about age 3 when my mother father and i went to a restaurant and my father pretended a bear head was eating him. i also suffer from anxiety attacks and occasional depression.
