The Valley Parade Fire.
27 years ago today, one cigarette butt (smoking was legal at grounds then) fell through a crack in a wooden stand, lighting paper and dry wood underneath which started to burn before setting fire to the bitumen roof which went up like a match – 56 people were killed, had there been fencing like at Hillsborough it would have been thousands burned to death. An appalling tragedy shamefully forgotten.

Hillsborough wasn’t caused by anything other than poor stewarding, pitch barriers and fear. The ground didn’t stop people entering the full stand, leading to massive overcrowding since those at the back had no idea what was going on at the front.

This incident led me to believe that when an injury occurs due to a deliberate act meant to injure an opponent that the person causing the injury should be sidelined as long as the person that was injured plus 1 game. If a deliberate injury causes the injured person to be sidelined for the rest of their life, then the perpetrator should be banned from the sport for the rest of their life.

I’m sorry, but forgive my ignorance. Surely how big a disaster actually is, should be defined by how many lives were lost, therefore one man losing his life competng (while tragic as that is), cannot be construed as big a disaster as say 39 people or 66 people or 96 people losing theire lives.
