I really don't see how the Hillsborough Disaster can be missed of this list. 96 Fans went to watch a football game and never returned, many more were injured. This Disaster could easily have been avoided had earlier warning signs been taken note of. Waring Signs such as Burden Park March 1949 when 33 People died and over 5oo more injured, also the semi-final at hillsborough that took place in 1987 after which the senior police officer incharge of the match operation that day noted that the layout at the Leppings lane end (the end in which the Liverpool fans occupied 2 years later, the end in which the disaster happened) did not lend itself to safe matchday entrance. Also as with Burden Park many of the crush barriers were in poor condition, and when pressure built up they collapsed, causing many fans to lose their footing under them. The failure of Police to realise a disater was happening right in front of them and their inability to react also played a major part in this Disaster. As the crowd began to build in the bottle neck outside the leppings lane end turnstiles a crush began to form, instead of delaying the kick off the officer in charge gave the order to open Gate C outside the turnstiles to let people in end relieve the crush outside. Once in there was no stuards or officers there to direct fans only a tunnel opposite which led directly into the central pens of the leepings lane end, as this was the only visible entrance fans entered via the tunnel. the central pens soon became packed, and the crush that was relieved outside the turnstiles began to form inside the stadium. As fans started to struggle to breathe and began to loose conciousness, others screamed at police officers to open the perimeter gates, but the police just stood there and watched, then when a gate sprang open a police officer quickly shut and locked it. As the pressure continued to increase fans began to climb the fencing to try ang get to the perimeter trac and safety. However when the police saw this was happening they bagan to beat the fans and push them back into hte pens. when the police finally realised what was happening they opend the gates and tried to get people out, they started helping people over the fances, fans were ripping advertisinh hoardings down to use as makeshift stretchers. although due to poor communication, when emergency services turned up at the stadium police outside who were unaware of the scenes unfolding inside the stadium told the services they were not needed. Only ONE ambulance made it onto the picth that day, had more been able to get on, many of the lives lost may have been saved....

JUSTICE FOR THE 96!!!!!

Also the ibrox disaster January 1971 where 66 people lost their lives.

Ah, Peter, NeilM, JMD, English soccer fans who think everything is about them. I know ManU fans think their tragedy is a greater one than Torino's, even though Torino were the greatest club side in Europe, 10 of their team on the Italian team, and all but two died. Liverpool fans who believe what happened at Hillsborough was worse than Heysel when, while both were tragedies involving Liverpool fans, they only killed their own in Sheffield.

If you don't like the list, why not make your own? You'll find that there are only so many (ten!) that you can squeeze into a list of TEN!

How disgraceful. No Hillsborough or Munich Air Crash. The person of this list should be condemned for their pure ignorance of these horrible events especially Hillsborugh, which to this day is one of the world's worst sporting disasters. Pure and utter ignorance.
