A must have album. I would have put Paul’s Boutique by The Beastie Boys on this list as well. It bombed at first but is very influential in the hip-hop circles.

None of the tracks are thematically linked, some of them just happened to be about an England that was no more. Concept albums did not become “mainstream” until The Who’s “Tommy” in 1969 (though technically The Pretty Things beat them by a year with “SF Sorrow”). Perhaps it might help if you didn’t use Wikipedia as your reference source when writing about rock n’ roll.

Their previous album "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" has been called the most beautiful act of commercial suicide in pop rock history, but it was the next album, with McGuinn joined by three country musicians, that really caught the flack. Maybe the sheer range of music involved was the problem, ranging from pure country and western to near heavy medal. A great album, though.
