"Johnny Got His Gun" to me is a surrealistic and horrifying movie to watch. Timothy Bottoms, who plays the man with no arms, no legs, no vision and no hearing is frightening I found it rather odd that Donald Sutherland played the role of Jesus. If you have seen the video for Metallica's song "One", there are flashbacks of that movie and the lyrics are very simiar to what the movie represents. The unflinching scene from that movie was the nurse who wanted to pleasure him with her hand, if you know what I mean.

I've never heard of Casablanca being described as a war movie per se and I don't think it quite works.

Conversely, I'm not sure it makes sense to leave off All Quiet On the Western Front(1930). It's pretty astonishing, even today. It's in the National Registry, it won Best Picture(big deal, I know) and it was banned in Nazi, Germany and Fascist Italy. These things I mention only to point out that the movie had a HUGE impact and is still considered one of, if not the most potent anti-war movie ever made and it was made at a time when such a perspective wasn't trendy or easy.

Bill Coffin makes a great point and an interesting one. Saving Private Ryan was cheesy...except for when it wasn't. The first half hour of that movie is the most harrowing half hour I think I've ever seen on film. I could see that alone being worthwhile to make this list.

A bunch of people mentioned Patton.

Glory, certainly, others have mentioned it. The scene where Matthew Broderick keeps firing his gun while telling the marksman to shoot to give him some idea of what it will be like in battle alone makes a huge statement.

Some others worth consideration though I don't think I'd put any on the top ten:

Stalag 17

Run Silent, Run Deep

Downfall

Home of the Brave

and since this list (gasp! Why am I doing this? Oh well...)

Letters to Iwo Jima

Hurt Locker

"Objective, Burma", Starring Errol Flynn and Directed by Raoul Walsh, (1945). Deemed by many to be the greatest and most moving WWII production released during the war. American Paratroopers are dropped over Burma where their mission is to destroy a Japanese radar station. The Americans led by Flynn are successful in wiping out the station, but they are spotted and descended upon by Japanese forces. Impended from returning to Allied Lines, the American soldiers must try to survive enemy encounters, exhaustion, starvation, and the elements until they are rescued. Splendid performance by Flynn and exceptional direction from Walsh ; excellent performances enhanced by energetic score. (Synopsis Courtesy from : "Videohound's Golden Movie Retriever, 2008 edition

I really don't know whether Casablanca is a war movie? Ain't it more like a noir-film set in a war. SO many films could be considered war movies then. Apocalypse, Now is definitely the best war movie, but what did you think of more narrow war-films such as The Thin Red Line or Come And See? (which are some of the best war films)
Instead of making these mainstream lists, then why not widen the readers film horizon with some more obscure titles, then doesn't get anything from just looking at the same hollywoody choices all the times.
But well, it's your taste.
