Maybe I overlooked something, but even topping Liz Bathory would be Queen Ranavlona I of Madagascar, who ruled for about 30 years from about 1835-75 (or thereabouts. After the death of her husband, the legitimate king, this she demon,known to history as the “female Caligula” or to the French as “Il horrible Ranavalono” wiped out every male member of the royal family she could seize and had herself proclaimed Queen, ostensibly to rule on behalf of her young son, Rakota. Fiercely biased towards her own tribal origins and determined to stamp out everyone else on this big island, this is one of the world’s lesser known episodes of ethnic cleansing, as it is estimated over the course of her bloody reign over one third of the Madagascan population was wiped out!!!

A gruesome and horrifying death awaited those convicted of even the smallest trespasses, such as boiling, impalement and being sawn in half. Beheading, hanging and being thrown off a cliff were considered mild. During her reign, Ranavalona was deeply suspicious of the foreign powers and Madagascar became a “no go” zone, the crew of any foreign vessel unlucky to land ashore without express consent likely to find themselves either cut into pieces by her bloodthirsty guards or sold at the slave market. Several coups, a couple being orchestrated by her own son, were (unhappily!) not successful.

Well, that is just a small taste of what this woman was capable of. It is debated whether or not she was actually sane.
