Wow. Good choices for the most part, and I'm not going to speak on the ones I haven't seen but I'm very surprised by your order...at least I am until I read some of the comments below. Personally, I'd move Miller's Crossing waaay up just for sheer virtuosity.

I'd move Once Upon a Time in America waaay down just because I thought it was kind of shapeless and boring at times.

Scarface is a highly overrated movie beloved by stimulation junkies. It's a lot of fun, but it's not in the same ballpark as The Godfather or Pulp Fiction.

Carlito's Way? You really like it that much? #9? Take out Sean Penn and it's a very mediocre movie in my opinion. There's no way it can touch Mean Streets, Miller's Crossing or The Departed.

I'd move Mean Streets up as well because it's still brilliant and changed the gangster movie landscape.

I think it's a mistake not to include Godfather Part II. That's a fantastic movie that many consider to be better than the first one. Together they are one of America's greatest epics. 1a. and 1b. would be fine.

Other people have mentioned Public Enemy with Jimmy Cagney, Boyz n the Hood and The Usual Suspects. All of which I'd put on before Road to Perdition.

Sometimes I forget how much I(we) love gangster movies.
