I'm not a native English speaker, and I know it's an old list, but I can't help but commenting on rule three, does that mean that V. S. Naipaul (Nobel prize winner in literature 2001) should renamed his novel "The Enigma of Arrival" to "The Enigma of Coming"? "Arrive" come from the Romance languages, "come" is a Germanic word.

"Speeling"? Was that supposed to be a joke? It made me laugh anyway. I think for begining writers and people writing technical articles short senteces are a good thing. I, on the other hand, prefer medium to long sentences. Mostly because I'm wordy. I got As in most of my classes and they did decide to give me my diploma. I believe that the English gods hath smiled upon my wordy sentences.

49. writergal:

Oh yeah. You're absolutely right. This helps a lot.

If you think too much about who will read your work, you can cook the freshness right out of it. Just steam it a little; leave the color in. Don't worry if it sounds stupid; if you feel like putting it in, put it in. You can always take it out later if it's still stupid.

As for Rule 2, when you read it out loud you can often hear something that LOOKED okay when you were staring at it for hours, but doesn't really work.

Rule # 1 : Write the first draft for yourself and no-one else and Rule # 2 - when in doubt, read it out loud.

Jamie, thank you so much for writing this list. My English professor handed our essays back to us a week ago and told us to redo them if we made lower than a 85. Well thanks to your list, I made a 97 instead of the 82 I had previously. Thank you so much for all of the entertainment and the help that you give.
