Take, for example, ‘ The Heroes of Shipka (1954); and Bondarchuks ‘War and Peace’ (1967); although, admittedly ,the latter was influenced by the former, there can be little doubt that mass battle action – with “real” extras- looks far more realistic and more effective than up-market computer direction.

One particularily good scene is when the French Cuirassiers mount the
slope in a charge, and find the “fleeing” Wellington Army
organized in a mass of infantry squares.

It’s a close second to the Omaha Beach landing in Private Ryan as my favorite. If you haven’t seen Children of Men, go rent it. It’s absolutely spectacular. You are totally exhausted after watching it, such a powerful movie.
