I think that, allowing for so many modern films to have computer tec, that the great battle movies of the past have far better to offer. Take, for example, ' The Heroes of Shipka (1954); and Bondarchuks 'War and Peace' (1967); although, admittedly ,the latter was influenced by the former, there can be little doubt that mass battle action - with "real" extras- looks far more realistic and more effective than up-market computer direction.

Missing the mass scenes from "Waterloo".
No fiddling around with Computers.
Hire a significant portion of the Soviet Red Army
and you get the type of scenes in this movie
One particularily good scene is when the French Cuirassiers mount the
slope in a charge, and find the "fleeing" Wellington Army
organized in a mass of infantry squares.

The Children of Men 6 minute long, no-cut battle scene was AMAZING. It's a close second to the Omaha Beach landing in Private Ryan as my favorite. If you haven't seen Children of Men, go rent it. It's absolutely spectacular. You are totally exhausted after watching it, such a powerful movie.

While not technically a "war battle", the extended gunfight ending scene in the movie "Heat" blew me away when I saw it. Very realistic as well!
