Well, I guess that if there was no way out I would fight a bear even if a knew i just had a small chance of wining. I would punch or kick its nose, and poke its eyes. In this situation you have to do what you can to survive.

In order to fend off a black bear or grizzly, you'll have to be extremely efficient with a knife and know something about mammal anatomy. As with most mammals, try hitting the face (eyes, snout, nose).

I also disagree that you shouldn't climb up trees. Being situated above an attacker puts you in a much better position to fight. Besides, none of the larger bears are really exceptional tree climbers.

Eliseer: The rope knot method only works against vampires, not bears.
