These are films where the last moments of the film are simply astounding. If you think there has been an omission, please be sure to mention it in the comments – and link to youtube if you can. WARNING: This is essentially a list of spoilers – continue at your own risk.
15. The Asphyx 1973
This is not a hugely well known film but the ending is ultra creepy. A Victorian scientist and his assistant discover the secret of death: everybody has a kind of personal “death spirit”, the “asphyx”; when somebody is about to die, this “asphyx” comes in to claim his victim. If it can be caught at the right moment, immortality follows! The scientist succeeds in capturing his own asphyx, but when he starts experimenting on his daughter, he accidentally kills her. The assistant, his daughter’s fiance, commits suicide; the scientist, wanting to die with them, tries to set his asphyx free again, but has forgotten the cipher code to the safe in which the spirit is kept. He is doomed to live forever. The ending: you see the immortal scientist walking down a 1970s road looking his age (around 120-140) – he can’t die – but he can age. To make matters worse, he accidentally walks in front of a car! I couldn’t find the last scene so I have included the trailer.
14. The Blair Witch Project 1999
You either love it or you hate it – but there is no denying that this is one of the most chilling endings of a horror film ever. When I first saw it I had the pleasure of not having discovered it was fake and I will admit it – I nearly cried. You never once see the witch in this film but in this scene her presence is felt with intensity.
13. Batman Begins 2005
I loved Batman Begins – I think it is the best of the movies, and this last scene was outright awesome! Just as the great movie comes to a close, we are given a quick taste of what is to come: The Joker! One of the most famous enemies of Batman. I don’t know about you – but I can’t wait!
12. The Silence of the Lambs 1991
“I’m having an old friend for dinner” – this has to be one of the best ending lines of a movie ever. You just have to love this film – it is all good and no bad.
11. Carrie 1976
If you not seen this film, rent it for Halloween – it is one of the great horrors. In this final scene, we see one of the school companions of Carrie White laying flowers on her grave. If you have seen this film – you will know why this scene is here – if you haven’t – you will soon!
10. The Usual Suspects 1995
For two hours, Kevin Spacey’s spineless Verbal plays helpless lamb being lured to Chazz Palminteri’s slaughter. But with the drop of a coffee cup, and the shaking off of a limp, the true identity of a criminal mastermind is revealed.
9. Casablanca 1942
Okay – it is one big cliche, but this is probably the most memorable scene in any movie – it is certainly one of the most quoted. It has to be on the list.
8. The Godfather 1972
“Don’t ask me about my business!” – Michael, the otherwise gentle boy in the family becomes Don. His wife Kay asks him what his “business” is and he rebukes her. This dark ending to one of the greatest films ever made, foreshadows the secrets and horrors to come in the sequel. I find the very last section of this to be a very moving scene as the upper legions of the family come to pay their respects to the new Don. It gives me chills!
7. Boogie Nights 1997
“You’re a fucking star.” says Mark Wahlberg as he unexpectedly pulls out his penis in this final scene (remember, the penis is the focal point of much of the film but it is never shown on screen until this moment). For obvious reasons this scene has been slightly edited (only via an overlay) so it is not banned from youtube. The final scream is not in the film – it was added for humor presumably.
6. Rosemary’s Baby 1968
This scene is here because it is one of the most annoying scenes I have ever seen in film history! I just couldn’t believe it. I literally yelled at the screen: “throw it out the window!” – but Mia didn’t listen. An amazing film from an amazing director.
5. Bonnie and Clyde 1967
This one is not for the faint of heart. Here we see the last two minutes of Bonnie and Clyde full of unyielding shock and violence.
4. Planet of the Apes 1968
When I first saw this film as a kid I was blown away by this ending – I ended up renting the rest of the movies and the whole set is now one of my prize collections! This scene comes at the end when the main character realizes that all along he has been on earth in the future – a wonderful twist and an amazing ending.
3. Se7en 1995
It really doesn’t get much more dramatic than this. In the final scene we see the killer (Kevin Spacey) set the scene to become his own last victim. This is one for the moral dilemmas list. What would you do?
2. Fight Club 1999
Just when you thought the major twist was a shock, we get another one – bigger than before. This has to be one of the weirdest “romantic” moments in film history.
1. Dr Strangelove 1964
“Mein Fuhrer! I can walk!”. This is a masterful ending to a masterful work by Stanley Kubrick. You just have to love his choice of music.

October 26th, 2007 at 8:28 am
I’ve seen all these movies, and I would have to agree with them all, except possibly Fight Club. I genuinely thought the build-up to the end was much better than the ending itself, and I left the cinema feeling slightly disappointed. =(
I’d have to add the ending of Cruel Intentions to that list. The deliberate twisting and quick changing emotions would put it as one of my favourite, and most amazing movie endings!
October 26th, 2007 at 8:28 am
I personally would have put The sixth Sense on this list, I may be berrated for saying that though. Also The Usual Suspects would have been tops for me.
October 26th, 2007 at 8:33 am
Ryan: Cruel intentions is the spawn of Satan! I hate it as much as I hate John Malkovich
Juggz: I considered the sixth sense.
October 26th, 2007 at 8:49 am
Jaime: youll have to explain your hatred for John Malkovich, I just don’t see how anyone can hate him. I have been a fan of his ever since In the Line of Fire.
October 26th, 2007 at 8:51 am
jfrater: Cruel Intentions was a good movie. I think the endding to Wild Things should have been on here… that was twistedly amazing…gads
October 26th, 2007 at 8:53 am
I haven’t seen all of these movies but the ones I have certainly deserve to be here.
There are movie here with surprise /twist endings and “amazing” endings. It would be interesting to separate these categories with two lists. (Just a thought)
Some other movies that came to mind are The Sixth Sense & Sleuth
October 26th, 2007 at 9:03 am
Juggz: to be honest I can’t explain it – I just cringe whenever I see him act.
Ravyn: I considered that too – I enjoyed that film a lot (Wild Things – not Cruel Intentions)
Blogball: I did another list a while back of top 10 movie twists
October 26th, 2007 at 9:31 am
how about “Unbreakable”
i think “Se7en” has the best ending ever. i skimmed through this list because of the spoilers, but i love the new batman.
did you see the ‘trailer’ for “The Dark Knight” yet?
October 26th, 2007 at 9:32 am
Since you included Casablance, I would have to include another old movie, Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution, starring the ever delightful Marlene Dietrich as the witness. What you discover at the end just absolutely blows you away.
October 26th, 2007 at 9:43 am
dalandzadgad: unbreakable was a good one – I liked that film.
WildSquirrel: I haven’t seen it – I will now that you have given it such a rave review though! Thanks
October 26th, 2007 at 9:52 am
The list is alright, but how about endings in movies like Saw, Saw 2, The Departed, The 6th Sense, American Beauty, The Devil’s Advocate, Friday The 13th, The Omen , Damien Omen,…
all these movies have WTF endings.
October 26th, 2007 at 9:56 am
Say Anything!!!! Best ending!
October 26th, 2007 at 9:57 am
Dawn – the ones you mention are all great – but that would give us a list of 24 – I have to draw the line somewhere or I would spent a week on one list
October 26th, 2007 at 9:58 am
i personally didnt like the ending to the departed, ok lets just shoot everyone in the head and end it. all though i did like what matt damon’s character finds waiting for him in his appartment
October 26th, 2007 at 10:09 am
Jamie I am disappointed you hate Cruel Intentions. It does happen to be one of my favorite movie endings as Ryan mentioned above. Just the slow motion scene as Sarah Michelle Gellar is “found out” and they discover her necklace that hides her cocaine all with Bittersweet Symphony playing, all dialogue is silenced. It’s so awesome.
October 26th, 2007 at 10:14 am
Here is the Cruel Intentions ending if anyone is interested….
October 26th, 2007 at 10:21 am
Jackie: I think I was put off it because of the very false characters – they are portrayed as coming from a wealthy socialite family but they behave like none I have ever met. Les Liaisons Dangereuses has been badly maligned by this adaptation (and the Dangerous Liaisons adaptation starring John Malkovich). Having said that – I do think the ending is good – we always love to see someone like Kathryn get their comeuppance.
October 26th, 2007 at 10:29 am
Memento had a great ending. Or beginning, I guess. Sort of a slow twist, but it’s one of those that sink in right as the credits start to roll.
October 26th, 2007 at 10:57 am
No “requiem for a dream”?? That ending was intense!
October 26th, 2007 at 11:01 am
deedee0323: it’s already on the Top 10 Depressing Scenes in Cinema
9000: I was very very close to including it.
October 26th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
I would have added Primal Fear to this list. Awesome turn-around at the end.
October 26th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Jamie I keep meaning to see Les Liaisons Dangereuses, I will add it on my list of movies to rent soon.
October 26th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
Jackie: you will love it
Dan: Totally – and it includes one of my favorite actors – Edward Norton
October 26th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
jfrater: totally love Ed Norton. I think he is underrated as an actor!
October 26th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Dan: He is one of those actors where I will pick up any movie he is in because you can be sure it will be great
October 26th, 2007 at 1:20 pm
i’m glad the sixth sense isn’t on this list there was no twist ending it was pretty obvious from the start hell i figured it out watching the treailers
October 26th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
trailers ,,,, damn my spelling sucks
October 26th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
JJ: it is on another list I think – but having had one too many wines I don’t remember which
If you search you will find it. BTW, you are far smarter than dumb ole me – I didn’t realise until the very last most obvious minute
October 26th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
JJ: erm… don’t look too closely at some of my spelling on the lists
October 26th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
Here you go Jamie
Top 15 Great Movie Twists
October 26th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
Ravyn: oh great – thanks
October 26th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
This is a pretty ambitious list and I think you definitely nailed some of these. However, I would remove Batman Begins, Usual Suspects, Carrie, Asphyx, and Rosemary’s Baby for:
The Mexican Shootout finale in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ_jDWUTwmM
Pulp Fiction
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Rudy (I can watch two seconds of this and feel my eyes starting to well up already)
Hmmm… I can see why this is so hard. Here are some more:
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Citizen Kane
The Graduate
Rocky
Dumb and Dumber
Say Anything
The Bicycle Thief
Running On Empty
Dazed and Confused
Shawshank Redemption
How did you narrow it to just 15?
October 26th, 2007 at 1:49 pm
Jamie: Anytime
… now go drink another
October 26th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
Top notch list! I have to see The Asphyx now.
Nobody mentioned Brazil or 12 Monkeys? That almost hurts my tender little feelings!
There’s a French movie called Diva that had a great twist ending, too.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:20 pm
What about the Prestige
October 26th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Borg: wow – you certainly went to a lot of trouble – I love your list – thanks
Oh – though shame on you for removing the Asphyx – if you saw the ending – and not the trailer I included, you would understand why it is here.
Ravyn: oops – too late – already done that
Richard: haven’t seen Diva but definitely considered the other two – Brazil is great.
Jon: I am ashamed to say that I haven’t seen the prestige yet – despite the fact that Christian Bale is one of my favorite British actors. I will watch it ASAP.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:33 pm
you forgot the crying game lmfao.
October 26th, 2007 at 2:49 pm
Gr8flDdFn: oh – that came so close to being included! But I seem to recall the famous scene was not at the very end but a little earlier.
October 26th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
question….
What part after the ‘main twist’ are you talking about in Fight Club? The fact that the buildings blew up… am i missing something…
October 26th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
I think one of my favourite endings is from The Illusionist.
This increases my desire to someday see Fight Club.
October 26th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
Fight club has one of the best endings to a film i have ever seen
The ending is staring you in the face for about 3 quaters of the movie, you only realise this when you see it again, sheer brilliant
October 26th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
I love the ending in boondocks saints too:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=o9VfPSytawc
October 26th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Evan: Thanks for ruining The Departed for me! I guess I should have known better than to read any of the comments !
jfrater: Once again, another great list!
October 26th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
Total Recall??
October 26th, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Brazil should be on the list for that ending scene where he escapes with the woman he loves and suddenly it cuts away and you see that he’s really still in the interrogation/torture room.
October 26th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
The Prestige? THAT was an awesome ending. Blew my mind.
October 26th, 2007 at 9:35 pm
the original saw has to be included….
October 26th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
How about Hide and Seek???
October 26th, 2007 at 11:12 pm
I definitely have to agree with The Blair Witch Project. I didn’t have the knowledge of it being fake when I watched and that ending managed to scare me in a world full of movies that can’t.
October 26th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
Love this list!! I totally thought Blair Witch was real when i saw it too, i kept thinking “WHY THE HELL IS NO ONE FREAKING OUT ABOUT THIS!?” Then felt quite silly when i realized it wasnt real
And not to be the spelling police, but you went a little willy nilly with the spelling of Se7en.
October 27th, 2007 at 1:13 am
Pete: the main twist is the fact that the two main characters are the same person.
October 27th, 2007 at 6:33 am
i no what sshould of been there was a ending to this koren film called old boy the ending of it was just fantastic
October 27th, 2007 at 12:37 pm
The thing I love about the ending of Blair Witch is how subtle it was. You really had to pay attention to get it, otherwise you wouldn’t understand why a guy standing up against a wall would be so scary. The movie never went for cheap shocks, in fact you never saw the witch, all the scares were in your own mind.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:38 am
I can see why The Prestige isn’t listed. Good film and all, but I could see the ending coming from a mile away.
And, with all due respect, I think you’re missing the point with Rosemary’s Baby. It was about the power of the motherhood bond. It had to end that way.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:13 pm
“A Boy and his Dog” – http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0072730/ – ‘Nuff said.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
good list, i like it, however i have to say i liked the ending to “Crywolf”. One of the best ending made in a while. im not gonna share it, cuz im not huge on spoilers.
October 30th, 2007 at 1:14 am
Borg: exactly – that is the secret to its success. In a way the first Texas Chainsaw Massacre is like that – you don’t see the brutality – it is implied.
rp: I understand your point – but I was still incredibly annoyed
Ben: I haven’t seen it – I notice it stars Don Johnson – should that be putting me off?
mike: I haven’t see that – I will see if I can get hold of a copy! Thanks.
October 31st, 2007 at 4:23 pm
I guess you forgot The Sixth Sense ending and Oldboy (the famous Korean movie)
November 2nd, 2007 at 10:52 pm
Have any of you people seen any Hitchcock? He was a master at the surprise ending. Try Vertigo, The Birds, Psycho, etc. Just because something’s recent doesn’t mean it’s better.
November 3rd, 2007 at 1:58 am
Jim – if you look at some of our other lists you will see that I have done an entire list of Hitchcock movies – I certainly don’t shy away from including old movies in my lists.
November 8th, 2007 at 11:33 am
Don’t Look Now. the warning is in place from the get go. if you get a kick from watching your friends wet themselves you can’t go wrong. maybe i should have rephrased that. you’ll be pushed to find anything as shocking
November 8th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
Wild Things, yes! Also, definitely would have included Sixth Sense and love, love, love Amelie and Shawshank.
and of course, Godfather, Phildelphia Story, All About Eve, Kane, Usual Suspects…
November 8th, 2007 at 10:42 pm
MEIN FURHER!
Loved that movie. No one else here seems to have commented on that movie.
November 8th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Brian Moo: me too – I only saw it for the first time quite recently and was blown away by it.
November 12th, 2007 at 6:37 pm
One flew over the cookoos nest
[[dont know how to spell it]]
the end was so sad
well…i thought it was
until the part where the guy actually pulled the thing out with his strongness…that was a happy ending
November 12th, 2007 at 6:44 pm
The Departed should be listed
November 12th, 2007 at 11:50 pm
Requiem for a Dream has an amazing, if not the most depressing, ending. Definitely should have been on here.
November 14th, 2007 at 3:51 am
The most amazingly bad movie ending I ever saw was to the 1978 remake of the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” When I saw it in the theater, there was silence after the final scene. Then someone in the front row stood up and uttered a heartfelt obscenity, for which he received a standing ovation.
November 14th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
This is a great list, but the all time greatest movie ending has to be from Michael Manns, Last of the Mohicans. When the sister jumps from the cliff to die with her lover. It’s well shot, set to great music and sends a chill down my spine every time I see it.
November 15th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
I think Saw should be added. After all, when Jigsaw is suddenly revealed to be the man who was presumably dead in the center of the floor, I doubt there was a single person whose jaw didn’t immediately hit the floor. It was a mind-blowing and completely unseen ending to an amazing murder/mystery.
November 23rd, 2007 at 10:03 pm
ok, gonna be a fanboy for a second here but…
how could you leave out Return of the Jedi? I honestly thought it was going to be #1. Even if youre not a fan of the movies, you cant deny how emotionally powerful it was to see Vader turn.
November 23rd, 2007 at 10:41 pm
Good List.
Here’s some that I liked that didn’t made it to yours.
Sixth Sense
Primal Fear
The Prestige — sets you thinking
In My Fathers Den — so tragic
Jeux d’enfants
The Others
November 26th, 2007 at 10:52 pm
If you thought the end to the movie version of fight club was twisted then you REALLY should read the book you will be blown away. Chuck Palahniuk is a genius.
November 30th, 2007 at 5:30 am
I enjoyed the surprise ending of Colossus: The Forbin Project.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus:_The_Forbin_Project
The surprise being that there is no surprise
Note Ron Howard is directing a remake!
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:39 am
I’ll throw a vote in for The Departed. The movie was pretty brilliant, but NO ONE expects what happens when those elevator doors open. And the scene at the very end is so fucking satisfying.
December 4th, 2007 at 8:11 am
I like the ending of The Game (Michael Douglas)
December 11th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
the ending of ” a clock work orange ” is kinda great to i think =p
December 17th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
I think Suicide Kings deserves to be on this list. Sure the ending was f*cked up but it was awesome.
January 1st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
ending of Memento is excellent!
January 3rd, 2008 at 1:04 am
You missed Oldboy dude, for certain should be on the list, when Ohdaesu opens the book and see the pictures….you just go like “OOOOOHHHHH GET OUT A HERE”
January 3rd, 2008 at 1:21 am
Treznor – yeah, someone else mentioned Oldboy.
A truly excellent movie !!
January 3rd, 2008 at 3:03 am
Agree with Borg – ROCKY!
January 11th, 2008 at 1:44 am
I think Saw 2 should be included, that was an awesome ending!
And Romeo and Juliet, that was so sad…
January 15th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Ryan I def agree about Cruel Intentions WHAT AN AMAZING ENDING! I agree with most of these, Batman Begins, The Usual Suspects, The Blair Witch etc. I also love the end of KILL BILL, with Bill standing behind Sophie and you hear him say, “does she know that her daughter is still alive?” Ahhh.
January 20th, 2008 at 9:36 am
I thought the Prestige had a great ending!!!
February 6th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
I, being a silent film buff, think that THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI should have been included on this list. Sure, the movie was made in 1920, and yeah, the sets used might have been VERY surreal, but once you get over those little tiny problems, it will turn out to be one of the best films you have ever seen.
THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI was the very first film to use the “Twist Ending” conclusion, and it does so in a very shocking and surprising way. It set the standard for today’s “Twist Ending” plot, and was the first horror film EVER.
Now, I’m not going to give away the ending, for those of you who havn’t seen it, all I am going to say is it is going to be with you for a long time after you see it. I highly reccomend THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI to all of you who are silent film buffs, like me, and those of you who are not.
February 11th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
BATMAN!? AHAHA?
March 7th, 2008 at 12:48 am
I’m coming in a little late with this one, but I really enjoyed the movie Identity. Anyone Identify with me?
March 7th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Doh! I realize now after further surfing I should have probably put this in with the Top 15 Great Movie Twists..
March 7th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Regarding Bonnie & Clyde: When this film first came out people were shocked because up until then movies didn’t show such violence, they only implied it.
Just for fun, here is the actual newsreel that was shown in theaters (back in the 30s that is how they saw the news) of the deathcar scene with Bonnie & Clyde still in the car (but you cant really see them that well) Its funny to here the guy describe stuff.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:40 am
definitely need employee of the month for sure and no not the one with dane cook the one with matt dillon
March 29th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
“Scarface” had a decent ending.
March 29th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
ok maybe i am the only one but i thought The Game was a fairly good movie with a great ending…not many people i know have actually seen the movie though so maybe thats why…don’t think it has been mentioned either way
April 15th, 2008 at 6:22 am
Great list, I would lend my support to ‘One flew over the cuckoo’s nest’to be included butif you like a good twist at the end try ‘The Crying Game’.
May 6th, 2008 at 12:20 am
What about The Game? That ending really surprised me! The same holds for arlington road! What do you think?
May 7th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Most amazing ending, OldBoy hands down. I really expected to see that on the list.
May 9th, 2008 at 12:41 am
I know this movie was made after this list was posted, but ‘The Mist’ had an amazing ending in my opinion.
May 10th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Jfrater: What no Carrie 2? Surley one of the greatest films ever.
May 10th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Hi ! to my opinion almost all the choices up there have good
ending but i personally think LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE as to be
in this list !!! I got a few that i think have a very good
ending …there is THE JACKET , there’s EDMOND , not to forget a great movie called PERFUME the story of a murderer
and there is the exellent ending of the first MATRIX witch is
one of the greatest ending ever …period !!!
CHILDREN OF MEN as an incredible ending…WOW!!!
You got VANILLA SKY , 12 MONKEY’S ,actually i kinda liked
the ending of THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST when the earth started trembling an there was a big crack on the ground..
I luv the ending of STAR WARS III THE REVENGE OF THE SITH..
The ending of X MEN 3 THE LAST STAND was real fun…
The ending of DOGVILLE was fun , ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE with
the aliens inthe end wa real cool , DRAGONFLY is good ,IN THE
MOUTH OF MADNESS as a good ending ‘ THE VILLAGE and i could
go on and on but there is a lot of great ending out there…
SyLvAiN***
May 28th, 2008 at 6:13 am
A film called old boy ending is one of the most amazing if a little twisted endings to a film ive ever seen my advice is to buy that before a real conclusion is reached on what a good ending is
May 31st, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Reservoir Dogs
Death Proof
May 31st, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee
June 11th, 2008 at 3:05 am
What about the Color Purple? It has one of the most moving happy endings I have seen. (although I will admit to have only seen so many movies.) Overall the movie is so underrated and overlooked for the beauty of the movie it is.
June 11th, 2008 at 5:33 am
Bree: I love the Color Purple. You will be glad to know that it is on at least one other list on this site.
June 17th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I completely agree with Usual Suspects.
Se7en is pretty good too.
I would like to see Saw and V for vendetta there though.
June 21st, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Unforgiven. Period.
June 26th, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Here are some other movies with awesome endings:
Primal Fear
Identity
One flew over the cuckoos nest
the Game
the Life of David Gale
July 4th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
21, the kingdom

Last week I saw a Korean movie called Welcome to Dongmakgol. It is set during the Korean war. An American pilot, two south Korean soldiers and three north Korean soldiers end up in the same mountain village, untouched by the war and, indeed, by the modern world. Under the influence of the simple life, distrust and hostility slowly give way to trust and cooperation. But the war intervenes. The UN regional commander becomes convinced that the village houses a northern anti-aircraft unit and that the American in being held captive there. He dispatches a rescue team and a bombing raid. The soldiers must work together to set up a fake anti-aircraft post at a safe distance from the camp, using supplies recovered from a crash transport plane.
http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=DHQT-ZKWQtw&feature=related Look particularly from 4.46 of the clip.
(I am cheating a bit – this is not the end of the movie; there are two short scenes afterwards.)

Glad to see Silence of the Lambs and Dr. Strangelove on here- both absolute genius and classics!!
I was actually expecting a lot more from Se7en after all the stuff I had heard about a “twist” ending- it was a great movie, but the ending didn’t shock me that much.
Other movies with excellent endings are One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Game.

although the ending of Dancer in the Dark is pretty expected with no twist whatsoever, still it is one of the most amazing movie endings i’ve seen.
July 18th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
great list, i would personally add 3:10 to Yuma, it has one of the greatest bittersweet endings in film. after the the death of dan, the viewer wants the gang to die, however when ben wade actually kills them we are filled with pity for the criminals in respect to their loyalty.

Mulholland Drive – though the whole movie is amazing.
Kids – Chloe Sevigny, who has recently discovered she has gotten HIV from her sole sexual experience, is raped in her sleep by another character in truly tragically ironic fashion.
Dancer in the Dark – this one has already been mentioned. Though I hate to admit it, I cry nearly every time I watch this movie.
The Doom Generation – the movie ends right after a scene of extreme violence and rape with the two remaining central characters silently eating a bag of Doritos and smoking while driving into the sunset.
The Life of David Gale – it has already been mentioned, but the ending is truly spine-tingling.
Cruel Intentions – though I could live the rest of my life without the acting “skills” of Ryan Phillipe or Gellar, they both truly shine in this movie, and seeing a b**ch character get her comeuppance is always satisfying.
Also:
Donny Darko
Chasing Amy
Pi
Kill Bill II
The Exorcist
The Craft (awesome ending moment)
Closer
High Art
Blue Velvet
I’m sure there are others. In some of these movies the endings are not necessarily shocking, but I think they are all great.

Bringing up the Doom Trilogy, ‘Nowhere’, the final installment, has a crazy ending as well. I’m not gonna give it away but it’s pretty great.

I was disappointed, but not surprised, that the ending to “Being There” didn’t make the list. Great movie, but not well known, and possibly Peter Seller’s best work ever. The ending takes the movie to an entirely different level!
Speaking of Sellers, “Dr. Stranglove” is one of my all time faves! Glad to see it here!

iron man.

I agree with a lot of things on the list, and also a lot of the comments are good, except I think that “ending” to some people is taking it to a little bit of an extreme. I would like to put in my own two cents on a couple of movies with endings I awesome for different reasons.
1) Layer Cake- Great movie IMO, with great shots and fun story. The ending and the question posed at the end was one I did not see coming.
2) Fresh- The way this movie ends with the look on the face of Fresh (Sean Nelson in his first role ever), an adolescent drug dealer, sitting across from Samuel L Jackson in the park is an absolutely iconic shot which immediately cuts to silence and black in an extremely effective way.

The ending to Devils Rejects. I mean, a shootout with a barackade of police officers to the guitar solo of freebird. AWESOME
September 3rd, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Every Federico Fellini movie is the best ending I’ve ever seen. He should have his own list of best endings.
And how about these: 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Raging Bull, Chinatown, The Bicycle Thief, The Graduate, and (even though I’m not a big fan, the ending is still great) Some Like it Hot.

If they had somehow been able to keep it a secret that The Blair Witch project was fake, that would be the scariest thing ANYONE has ever seen.

Ever seen the ending of That Obscure Object of Desire? It provoked me to laugh but also to think..
The ending I love the most was that of the US version of Pride & Prejudice (2005). It was so simple but it provoked me to smile with mirth.. Well shot and the music added the perfect touch..
And of course PSYCHO though everyone knows the ending by now..

November 27th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
it is quite satisfying to see the way you have described number 2.
i love that scene with buildings falling and the lover looking on, all broken, and the song. . .
also i think departed, as someone mentioned, deserved a place. . . .

December 5th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
I am speechless! “Spartacus” is not on there? You have got to be kidding me. The way Stanley Kubrick ended this phenomenal cinema classic is simply breathtaking, spectacular,jaw-dropping.. I have not the slightest idea how could you forget to include such a dramatic ending.
December 9th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
I think Das Boot deserves an honourable mention here, while Monty Python and the Holy Grail is about as surreal an ending as you can get in a film.
December 18th, 2008 at 6:16 am
One of the best endings to a film I’ve seen is the original Italian Job (1969) The plot (much the same as the 2001 ‘remake’) has a gang of thieves stealing gold in minis.
Here’s a trailer from the 1999 re-release
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=1vsDW1XNnzA&feature=related
The ending however…. Charlie, his gang, and the gold are in a truck hanging precariously off a cliff, and the last thing the audience hears is Charlie saying ‘Hang on, lads; I’ve got a great idea.’

How about Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark? Obvious we didn’t use the Ark to win WWII so they had to get rid of it again. So, how to get rid of it again without making it cliched? You lose it in a huge government warehouse thank to some bureaucratic redtape.
January 17th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
blair witch scared the shit out of me.. the ending did atleast. and the 1st saw. ahh. but fightclub ending was great! and se7en.. when brad shot him. i was pissed. i wanted to yell at him not to. haha

February 19th, 2009 at 11:25 am
The list is incomplete without the best ending of all time in the film U-Turn! Ending completes the movie.
February 19th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Just watched Chinatown, the ending is absolutely amazing. Music fits perfectly.
April 7th, 2009 at 11:22 am

I have a movie that didn’t end that well, but it did end kind of freakishly.
So there’s this movie called thr3e. There’s this guy who’s being stalked by a creepy man who is trying to kill him and his best friend/love. The creepy thing is…… He is the killer, and his best friend. His whole life he was insane and trying to commit suicide.
Creepy? HELL YES!
May 11th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Harold and Maude and Donnie Darko are major omissions.
But my tops would probably be like this
2. The Graduate
1. The Godfather
May 25th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
For me the greatest ending comes from a very recent movie
called MARTYRS …..wow what an ending !!!!!!!
I am not going to tell you the ending in order not to
give out the surprise because because thats the big deal
about this movie , after you see it you will never see it again like the first time .
So everybody knows what to do now ….and its to go
rent or buy this great movie !!! maybe someone could lend
you is copy , you can actually download it on mininova or piratebay for free …..its an original copy because one
of my friend downloaded it and said the copy is exellent!!
so give me some feedback on this movie …see ya !
ps: by the way if you dont know how to download its pretty easy , go download for free Utorrent and after you
open Utorrent go on piratebay or mininova and write martyrs on they’re search bar and when a couple of martyrs
appears you choose anyone that is between 699mb and 1.45mb sould not be under or over that ….so you click
on the one of you choice and a page will appear …on that page there is a description of the torrent …you can read the comments of other users before you clic on
download file , sometimes it is usefull to read comments
because the users sometime give you a feedback on the file …..but usually you dont have to read but just downloal the file or torrent , so good luck m8 ….
July 21st, 2009 at 12:30 pm
I think “The Sixth Sense” should have made the list.

Dear List Author,
The number one spot belongs to “Sleepaway Camp”.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, watch the whole film immediately.
January 10th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
@le360(161):
