She is an iron fisted dictator like none other, though she is not known for bloody killings or grotesque carnage displays. (Ok, she drove Billy to suicide with her constant belittling and badgering). Her regime was kept in a far more subtle manner than most. Her voice. She is not a physically strong woman but her voice, whether a command broadcast through the unit, or the silky cajoling and finality used during times of dissent and unrest, that is what her true power lies in. In fact, it is stated that there are only two inmates in the unit (Chief and McMurphy) who are there by compulsory means. The rest are able to check themselves out whenever they choose, for they are mere "actors". However they stay simply because their fear of Nurse Ratchet compels them to, not to mention the great lengths she goes to to actually convince them that they are crazy. (Her constant prompting during group therapy or her harping on Billy about the one thing that frightens him more than she,her mother[who Ratchet apparently is friends with although I am almost tempted to say that this is a lie now that I think about it]) Her authority is greatly diminished once McMurphy chokes her, and she is no match for McMurohy and Chief when he finally goes on the run from the tyrant, helping McMurohy achieve his dream of "getting outta here". sorry for the spoilers but its a well made point at least... ok. i think the epitome of EVIL has to be Nurse Ratchet from one flew over the cuckoo’s nest.
