Top 10 Simpsons Episodes

Published on November 25, 2007 - 89 Comments

For the last week, the site has been up and down as we have moved to a new host in California. Now that we are finally getting settled, it seems like a great time for us to all sit back and enjoy the new digs! The Simpsons has been around now for the better part of twenty years, and has become a staple on Sunday night television. From its humble beginnings as the crudely drawn yellow-hued family on the Tracy Ullman show, through its break away in December of 1989, and beyond up to its first feature film this past summer, The Simpsons has entertained and become ingrained in world-wide culture. The following ten episodes are by no means a complete list. In fact, just coming up with 10 was brain-meltingly difficult so I just chose the ones I could really relate to off the cuff. So please, feel free to inundate me with as many others as you can and I’d be happy to come up with a sequel in the future. Again, these are my opinion, but I do want yours, as well.

Top 10 Mixed Martial Artists

Published on November 25, 2007 - 54 Comments

Today Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the world. The year 2006 saw MMA set pay-per-view records surpassing both boxing and pro wrestling. In 1993, MMA or Ultimate Fighting was introduced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The first tournament was conceived with the intention of finding out which martial art was superior. In the end a young Brazilian, Royce Gracie was left standing defeating his opponents with an almost unknown style of grappling, Brazilian jiu jitsu. The top fighters of today are well-rounded athletes with expertise in striking (boxing, muay thai) and grappling (jiu jitsu, judo, wrestling) as well as some of the best cardiovascular training in sports. Pankration, a version of wrestling including strikes was an event in the ancient Olympic games. While the first modern events had few rules and no time limits, since 1999 state athletic commissions under the Unified Rules of MMA, which includes 32 fouls, have sanctioned competitions. No one has ever died in sanctioned MMA competition.

10. Rickson Gracie 11-0

Family champion of the infamous Gracies of Brazil, Rickson is said to have over 400 victories in jiu jitsu, vale tudo, amateur wrestling and various other combat sports. His pro record stands at 11 wins with no losses. Son of Brazilian jiu jitsu’s founder Helio Gracie, Rickson is a 7th degree black belt in Gracie jiu jitsu. Always promoting Gracie Jiu Jitsu as the best fighting style in the world, the only spot on his record came in an American Sambo tournament. Gracie claimed the rules were not properly explained to him. Forever a legendary figure to all mixed martial artists, he doesn’t rank higher because his professional wins came against some less than stellar competition.

Top 10 Coolest Star Wars Aliens

Published on November 24, 2007 - 52 Comments

There’s no denying it: without the influence of George Lucas’ masterpiece, the original Star Wars trilogy, on the Sci-Fi genre as a whole, it’s easy to assume that many films -if not all in the arena- would look significantly different. Lucas was given a chance by 20th Century Fox after many, many failed attempts to get his ‘Space Opera’ off the ground, and once he did, it took the movie industry by storm offering him the opportunity to continue his dream for 2 more films. Eventually, he’d go on to create another trilogy, granted not quite as stunning as the first, that would more or less wrap up the entire story. Thanks to Star Wars’ commercial success, we’ve been privy to all the merchandise it’s been able to generate and have seen some of the most creative and amazing toys put to plastic. Throughout the films there has been a slew of outlandish and amazing aliens and monsters from unknown galaxies, and each movie has a set few that really steal the focus. And that is what this list is all about: The Top Ten Aliens From the Original Star Wars Trilogy. I hope you enjoy. In case you couldn’t guess for yourselves, I am a rabid fan and have even gone so far as to name my children after characters from the franchise. A stipulation for me for this one was that none of these ‘aliens’ were ‘main’ characters who appeared in all three movies, which, as you’ll see, leaves Chewbacca out. Have fun!

10. Ewoks

Ewok

Hailing from Endor, or, if you’re a stickler, a moon of Endor also, coincidentally enough, called Endor, the teddy bear-like Ewoks turn out to be quite the little allies and serve, in their own little way, to turn the tide on the Empire. Standing basically knee-high, the Ewoks are a primitive race specializing in antique weaponry and the ability to hide just about anywhere. During The Battle of Endor, many of these miniature marauders lost their lives and the audience was actually witness to one such tragic event after an explosion on the forest floor. Regardless of their aid to the heroes, many viewers and fans can’t stand the little Muppets and vehemently refuse to bend on this.
