Dad always looked dapper with his duds and top hat on. Mum had so many ball gowns. It just seemed 2nd nature to them to dress up and go to these do’s. Mum got cheesed with the ‘no watch for ladies’ that she kept a small diamond-studded pocket watch in her evening bag. I suppose that that would be OK.

Before six o’clock one wears it with black waistcoat and regular black leather oxfords (albeit well polished ones) and if there are no women present after six, black waistcoat can be worn then as well.
Usually in these events white tie is worn with academic decorations, of which some might have plenty.
