you start by giving the story of the first comic book ever published, but from there your idea of 'comic history' instantly narrows. mostly, you just cover big events in the DC and marvel universes. what about early pulp stories? the creation comics code authority? the underground and alternative comics movements? the rise of manga in post-war japan? the comics medium as we know it today is incredibly expansive, along with a rich history and almost limitless creative potential.

I think that Jim Steranko’s artwork deserves an honorable mention. I remember his surrealistic “op art” techniques utilized in SHIELD, The X-Men and a few issues of Captain America during the late 60s. Steranko clearly influenced Todd McFarlane. I agree with the posters who mentioned Spider-Man #96-98 (the drug issues) and Dr. Fredric Wertham. Also of note is when Gwen Stacy was killed off in Spider-Man #121, as a good number of comic book historians believed that this incident closed the door on Marvel’s Silver Age and simultaneously initiating the far grittier Bronze Age of comics.

The death of Superman hit it hard for me, I was still in grade school but that completely got everyone talking about comics again.
