I do have one question if you don't mind. What age dog do you recommend for someone like me who will be a first time dog owner?

I don't think that a Puggle is a dog that is low maintenance with low exercise requirements. I have a 5-month old Puggle, and he is a ball of energy. True, they tire fairly quickly, but they can be little maniacs when active. Also, I think that training is extremely important. Puggles can be very stubborn, so you should start training right away in order to establish the rules and a routine. I love my Puggle, but I would never recommend one to someone looking for a calm, low maintenance dog.

If you live in an apartment, do NOT under any circumstances get a beagle (or puggle), chihuahua, or any kind of terrier. Trust me, one of my roommates had a chihuahua and then I lived next door to someone who had one for several years, they are yappers. They yap at every little noise. They're mean dogs. Most people get them because they're trying to be like Paris Hilton and they want to carry it around in a little bag, and then the dog is never socialized or taught how to behave. Steer clear. They're not that cute any way. Also, the vet tech's comment about bulldogs is spot on. They're SO sweet, but the health problems outweigh the sweetness for me. I couldn't handle the constant trips to the vet, emotionally or financially. Beagles (puggles, whatever) and Terriers are sporting breeds. Historically, they're hunting dogs. They do not do well in small places like an apartment. They require a fenced in yard or an owner with plenty of time to exercise the dog and help it burn up excess energy. They HOWL. Oh, it's terrible. I lived next door to a Jack Russell Terrier and it was the worse year of my life. It's howled and howled and howled every morning when its owner would leave... at 6am. Yeah, that was NOT fun. The thing could howl for an hour straight without stopping. If you live in an apartment of have neighbors that live within earshot, do them a favor and don't get a terrier or a beagle (if you plan on being a "lazy" pet owner, as stated in the title of this article). I have a Pomeranian and would definitely say he's a low maintenance dog. He was socialized with other dogs from a very young age so he has a great personality and is a very friendly and a happy boy. I have, however, seen some Pomeranians that are very yappy and unfriendly. It just depends on how they're raised.
