Well…the tower of Belem is not actualy a castle…so that’s that and also why didn’t you include the Alhambra! that is a beutiful palace complex. But in general great list! +++

love this list! I once had to do a scale model of the Warwick castle in the 7th grade, hardest thing I have ever done in my life, so i really apreciate the beauty of castles. I think Alcazar castle is the best for this list because the castle in Cinderella was based off alcazar so it really was in a fairytale.

i love boldt castle! it is gorgeouss!!! it has a theme of hearts (and harts) everywhere! its so tragic though- he made the castle(more like realllllyyyy big mansion) for his love, and then she died. so he had all production stop and never went back. The tools were left there, and the house was never finished. It has a bowling ally (in the temporary home), boat house, a playhouse for the children (where they lived while it was being built) and a pool room, a ball room and a heart shaped pool( just to name a few)! honestly breathe taking! the an who had this built was also the reason why 1000island salad dressing is around he had the chef create it for his wife, and the castle is apart of the 1000 islands!

I love my castles and truly admire this list.

Here I offer two of my favourites because they were built for the purpose of being castles:

A final note, I recently learned that the word castle entered the English lexicon shortly after the Norman Conquest, which doesn’t make them sound quite so fairytale.

Beautiful collection of castles!
Makes you think of who lived there..

But I am a little disappointed that there is no mention of one of the greatest and one of the oldest castles in Europe – WAWEL CASTLE. Just a little quote from the actual website of http://www.wawel.krakow.pl

“Wawel Hill – a Jurassic limestone rock, a dominant feature in the landscape of Cracow (about 228 m above see level) was formed about 150 million years ago. Situated on the bank of the Vistula river, surrounded by waters and marshes, the hill provided a safe haven for people who have settled here since the Paleolithic Age. It is supposed that the Slav people started living on Wawel hill as early as the 7th century.
Early medieval legends tell stories about a dreadful dragon that lived in a cave on Wawel Hill, about his slayer Krakus, and about the latter’s daughter Wanda, who drowned herself in the Vistula rather than marry a German knight….”
