Top 5 Logo Submissions

Having tallied the count from the top 12 list, we are now down to the final five. I would like to remind you that I will be making the final decision but I will take in to account the votes here. For this list I have included the original logo, as well as a sample of the logo on a tee-shirt and a mug – so you get a better idea of how they will look on merchandise (the main reason for this competition).

Another thing to keep in mind is that I am considering changing the overall color scheme of this site from orange/brown to shades of blue – the logo will be modified when that happens.

Again, the logos are in no specific order, but having seen them on potential merchandise, I have made a few comments on each one.

I like this one because the circular part of the design can be used separately or with the words. It stands out on the clothing and could be modified to put the text on the right for the top of the website.

I like the modern funky style of this one but I am a little concerned that it does not show too well on merchandise. It would be good for the top of the site – but I would need some convincing for apparel.

Like number 1, the circular section could be used separately. I am just not sure if the smiley face would be recognized as our own – whereas the image in entry 1 is distinct.

This was one of my favorites in the top 12, but seeing it on merchandise does tend to remind me of a corporate logo – the sort of thing you would see a dozen men on a company golf team wearing.

This one has great impact and the V could be extracted if needed. It is distinct and I think it has a very modern/retro appeal to it.

#2 is a definate hit! If it doesn’t win all, at least allow me to order it on a shirt and mug

All five designs are pretty poor, in my opinion.

I don’t get the concept behind number one, but I am a big fan of the font Avenir. So that gets a few points.

Number Two is just an odd font you can download for free probably. No creativity, and when small, nearly illegible. (@ newsong, a good logo should be easily legible at all sizes, from a thumbnail to a billboard).

Number Three makes no sense to me. Why the smiley face?

I would have chosen Number Four as the winner.

Number Five looks like a poor NCAA collegiate logo.

This might have been harsh, but that’s the way it goes in the design world.

As an entrant I applaud you on your final decision (no.2 of the top 12)!

Not only was if left of centre of popular opinion, it was sensible in that it is an immediately recognizable symbol for drawing the attention of surfers.

Internet traffic is dependent on “scan” viewing and being able to catch the eye of someone within 5-10 seconds at a glance. I’m sorry, but while no.2 of the top 5 was definitely thinking out of the box, out of context of the competition, it would’ve taken me quite a few seconds to figure out what it was saying…

I’ve also learned that my design style is too “blokey”! I’ve been designing in the motor trade for waaaaay too long. Some of those logos were spot on! Major kudos to all entrants though for coming at it from all directions!

My personal faves:

Fogelk’s No.4 of the top 12. This one was simple with a sense of fun that could easily be associated with this site. It shows that Fogelk definitely enjoys coming here and is totally down with what this site is about!

Chica’s No.8 of the top 12. Another fun angle that conveys the feeling immediately associated with the site. It shows why some of the top designers are women. Women have a different and refreshing mindset that I am sometimes envious of!

Again, congratulations and applause on your decision!

PS. The best logos don’t jump out at you immediately… They grow…
