I do love the list. But "A Confederacy of Dunces" is missing. I've read most of these books. Studied literature at school. I'm from the caribbean so it just goes to show the international applicability of some of these books. Good stuff.

Acire: "In Search of Lost Time" is the same as "Remembrance of Things Past" - the first is a better translation of the ACTUAL title: "À la recherche du temps perdu" (even Proust didn't like the translation of the phrase as "remembrance").

And yes - Wilde wrote the Importance of Being Earnest - which is a play not a novel - and this list is a reference to novels. As it says in the opening paragraph: "This is a list of ten great writers that are famous for one novel and one novel alone."

Proust and Wilde are not "one-hit wonders." Proust wrote "Remembrance of Things Past," which is possibly more famous than the work listed above, and Wilde also wrote "The Importance of Being Earnest," among other works. So I would hesitate before terming them as such...

A Confederacy of Dunces should be numero 1. And where is the Master and Marguerita ? Also, by one hit wonders, I'd like to suggest writers who have produced many books, but only within a certain field/world/reality. I'm talking about people like Tolkien, Conan Doyle, and Rowling. They are forever connected to just one thing. In Doyle's case, it became a prison. A subject for a new list, perhaps ?

"the bell jar" "the picture of Dorian Gray" and 'Wuthering Heights" are not really one hit wonders.

Sylvia Plath also wrote "three women" which is considered a classic

Oscar Wilde wrote "The importance of being ernest" "The ballad of reading Gaul" and "Lady Werdermer's fan" is becoming a movie.

And 'Wuthering Heights" was her only book, so that's debateable.

black beauty was written as propaganda for the RSPCA in england. to get the public's attention about how badly horses were treated.

bram stoker also wrote 'lair of the white worm' (made into a film by ken russell starring hugh grant) and 'dracula's guest' (kind of a prequel to dracula) but they aren't as good and not well recieved.
