Top 20 Beers
- Published February 16, 2008 - 408 Comments
Below is a list that is sure to incite a minor riot here at The List Universe. I have assembled a list of 20 beers that should be tried at least once. Much like wine, cheese, or ice cream, people all have their favorites and are usually loyal to a degree to their beer of choice, so I am not saying that these are the best beers, but instead represent a nice variety from which to pick and choose.
Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. –Benjamin Franklin
20. Budweiser

The biggest beer in the world (or at least it seems). I remember backpacking in Europe and seeing people sitting at cafes drinking Bud when a host of great European beers were inside waiting to be tasted. I hate having to include this, but it isn’t that bad.
19. Iron City

The logo is unattractive, the name does nothing, heck even the city conjures up bad images, but they make a pretty good cheap beer.
18. Amstel Light

Have you ever seen regular Amstel??
17. Red Stripe

Think Jamaica, reggae, and everything else rastafarian… oh yeah, and they have the best bottles. Hooray Beer!
16. Smithwicks

Ireland’s third most popular beer (and I think we can trust the Irish!). When pronouncing the name, the ‘W’ is silent. In Ireland, it is generally pronounced as ‘Smithicks’, ‘Smitticks’, ‘Smidicks’ or ‘Smeth-icks’.
15. Foster’s

Made popular by the “oilcan”, this Australian beer is served at every Outback restaurant but remains, ironically enough, unpopular in it’s native country.
14. Victory

For Pale Ale fans, their Hop Devil beer is a must. Super strong.
13. Corona

Ok, ok, I had to include this list simply because this beer is unique in that is almost entirely associated with summertime. Rarely do you see skiers downing a few apres-ski. Made popular by California surfers, this Mexican import is served with a lime. It is almost white and is rarely found in kegs.
12. Ommegang

One of the fastest growing US microbrews from Cooperstown, NY. Their five beers should be sought out if possible.
11. Chimay

These “trappist” beers made by Belgian monks are widely regarded as superior quality ales. They are not for everyone as not only are they pricey, but have a fruity flavor that some may have to acquire to appreciate.
10. Stella Artois

Quite simply put, a nice clean crisp beer that is widely available worldwide. A nice starter beer if you are looking at imported beers.
9. Paulaner

The highest ranking wheat beer (hefeweise) on this list goes perfect with an orange slice.
8. Newcastle

“Newcastle Brown, I’m tellin’ you, it can sure smack you down.” In Newcastle, the beer is often called ‘Dog’ (or simply ‘Broon’). The ‘Dog’ name comes from the euphemism “I’m going to walk the dog” or “I’m going to see a man about a dog” – meaning “I’m going to the pub” – and was further popularized by a 1980s advertising campaign. In southern parts of the country it is often referred to as “Newkie Brown”.
7. Samuel Adams

Named for a founding father of American independence, this Massachusetts brewery cranks out microbrew taste at macrobrew rates. At least one of their long list of quality beers is available at most bars in the US. They take pride in the many awards their brews have garnished.
6. Rogue

This Oregon brewery was one of the first to kickstart the “micro-brew” phenomena. Any beer called “Dead Guy Ale” deserves a spot on this list.
(rogue.com)
5. Sam Smith’s

Old school labels, gold foil, great taste, and sold in four-packs! Great porters and stouts at reasonable prices from this Yorkshire, England brewery.
4. Yuengling

Pronounced “Ying-ling”, America’s oldest brewery produces a truly great lager. Primarily available in the Mid-Atlantic area and recently in the south. You can ask for a “Lager” at most Pennsylvania bars and you’ll get one.
3. Guinness

This beer basically stands alone in the stout category. It’s truly the only beer that you can recognize from across the room. Just holding one makes you feel as if you are in a small pub in some quaint Irish town with a wool sweater on and the cold rain beating against the pub windows. Only a true bartender knows that in order to get a perfect pour, the glass should be filled to the middle, then filled once it has settled.
2. Sierra Nevada

If there is ever a beer that has it all its this. Intense flavor, great color, nice kick, and unique green label make this pale ale a must have in your beer collection.
1. Westvleteren

Ok, this is the greatest beer in the world. Don’t even try to argue. It can only be purchased at the monastery by call ahead reservation and at 1 case per car, you better make it last. I was fortunate enough to get a hold of one when my uncle raided his son’s stash on a random Sunday night (not the optimal time for such a beer). Unknowingly, we drank a few that his son had transported back from Belgium and only found out after they had been opened that this is what they were.

February 16th, 2008 at 10:37 am
1st!
February 16th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Oh yeah, and FIRST!
February 16th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Not!
February 16th, 2008 at 10:39 am
I can’t believe Buweiser is #20, Of course a lot of the exported beers ive trie are a lot better.
February 16th, 2008 at 10:40 am
Not a fan of Rogue, and Bud is piss
What about Anchor Steam Beer from San Fran?
February 16th, 2008 at 10:40 am
I notice there are no canadian beers.
Alexander Keiths and moosehead are very good
February 16th, 2008 at 10:47 am
I love Guinness. Buy my favourite beer is Speights Old Dark.
Steinlager (from NZ) would make my list; it’s especially popular outside of NZ, and has been voted “World’s Best Lager” in the past at the brewers world championships (or whatever they call these competitions)
February 16th, 2008 at 10:49 am
I can’t believe there are so many american beers on this list. What happened to Heineken, Carlsberg, Bavaria or Leffe???
February 16th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Not a fan of beer its just tastes horrible and stella or “wife beater” as its also known is the worst
February 16th, 2008 at 10:59 am
I don’t drink beer either – so I can’t judge unfortunately
February 16th, 2008 at 11:05 am
HOEGAARDEN from Belgium (pronounced hoogarden, or hoo for short). What a beer. Serve with a lemon slice in a 710ML frosted glass. It is a Hefeweisen. Very very satisfying, and my alltime favorite beer.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Are you kidding me with this list? There should be 20 Belgian beers on it.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:09 am
Yeah i don’t drink so…
good list anyway
February 16th, 2008 at 11:11 am
I am going to send this list to my husband and see what he says. He home brews and is a bit of a beer snob. He likes to try all he can. He says it is for ideas to brew at home
I would also like to see what Petey McGee has to say. He said on another list that he home brews too.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Heffeweisse with a lemon twist is quite refreshing you know?
And New Orleans Abita Turbo Dog was good fuzzy memories from highschool in the Big Easy.
I only drink Bud when I wanna break out in hives.
Haven’t tried or heard of Iron City, but I think it looks like it should be shot into outerspace. Looks like what a rugged coalminer from the fifties would drink while trail blazing in his 4×4, up some mountainside.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:22 am
Pretty Good Choices but my favorite is Alaskan Amber Summer Ale. Mainly in Ak but also can be found on the west coast some. Alaskan Amber is a brewery in Juneau, and the also have a nive IPA and Winter Ale.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Fab List. I personally prefer Guinness but i’m definitely gonna try some here that i’ve missed.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:29 am
GREAT LIST. I LOVE BEER! glad to see guinness up high along w/ stella and smitty’s. You overlooked Abita’s Turbo Dog. Named best beer by a microbrewery a few times, once in maxim magazine i think. although im a bit prejudice since i live about 7 miles away from the brewery
February 16th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Here’s a short vid (tv advert) for one of NZ’s iconic beers.

kiwiboi:” hahah hilarious ad
February 16th, 2008 at 11:52 am
I’m all for a good beer list but Canada has a lot of good beers. I want a new list with more beers and less Budd….
February 16th, 2008 at 11:52 am
I can’t agrue with #1, however, where is Weihenstephaner? It is the oldest brewery in the world – since 1040…
February 16th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Uhhh, I was so offended by that ad. What a way to objectify women and make us all seem stupid. How insens… Okay I can’t keep that up. That ad was hilarious. Thank you for sharing.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Hmm I wonder if I can talk hubby and kids on going on a free tour at Coor’s brewery. Yuck Coor’s. Wait, FREE BEER!
February 16th, 2008 at 11:59 am
i have tried to like beer, i just can’t do it. doesn’t taste good, IMHO.
February 16th, 2008 at 11:59 am
jfrater – yeppers. You ?
February 16th, 2008 at 11:59 am
There is some serious piss on this list.
Bud, Foster’s, Amstel, Corona… why not just put Pabst at #1 and have done with it?
February 16th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
No Dos Equis? No San Miguel? No Red Dog? No Labatts? Not much of a beer list. Feh!
February 16th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
JwJwBean – glad you enjoyed it
February 16th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
No Czech beers? How about Pilsner Urquell or Zatec czech lager?
February 16th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Beer is kind of disgrossting, but I do enjoy a good guiness.
-Andrea Carlena Beauman
February 16th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Chestica is rught, Pilsner Urquell is awe-inspiring.
-Andrea Carlena Beauman
February 16th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
i second the mention of Pilsner Urquell…great stuff.
additionally, Bell’s is a brewery local to me, in Michigan, US. Their most popular product is a wheat beer by the name of Oberon. It is a summer favorite around here.
February 16th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
what a rubbish list. how old are you? Have you actually gone out and drunk some beer, or are these the ones that daddy keeps in the garage?
February 16th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
by request my comments……
yes i homebrew. yes i drink fancy beers from all over the world. no, i am not a beer snob. i would mostly agree with this list. like lots of food, it all depends on tastebuds. i LOVE hoppy beers. my buddy loves wheats. to me all wheat beers taste like bubblegum. i like this list in that it includes the mass produced american beers as there’s a time and place for any beer. i would have ranked specific beers, not just breweries though.
i again produce a challenge to get out there and try something new. i know lots of people who say “i don’t like beer” that have tried other styles than BMC (budweiser miller coors) that find that yes they like beer.
i would have put guinness a little lower and yuengling and sam adams higher. and i would have included the brooklyn brewery and great lakes beers, but i don’t know how easy they are to get out of NE ohio. but again, it all goes back to tastebuds. i basically love beer in any and all forms.
interesting note about sam adams. right now we are in the midst of a hop shortage. hops have gone up about 300% in price in the last year or so. that’s why the price of microbrews are going up. sam adams has sent out a letter to other microbrews offering to sell some of their hop surplus at cost plus shipping. see, it really is all about the beer and the love to brew.
ok my top 20 breweries/beers in no order as it all depends on mood and availability
miller
sierra nevada
brooklyn
yuengling
great lakes
my kitchen
ayinger
warsteiner
guinness
labatt
molson
ommegang
unibroue
thirsty dog
flying dog
lindemanns
left hand
pilsner urquell
red hook
shiner
but again, any beer, any time
February 16th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
I love Hoegaarden, best summer drink ever. But I’m a born and bred London Pride girl myself.
February 16th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
what about arrogant bastard ale? that stuff is incredible and it has a kick like no other
February 16th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
To pour Guinness:
Tilt glass at 45 degree angle and pour until 3/4s of the glass is full. Wait for it to settle [u cant tell if its settled when the gas in the glass has stopped rising] normally takes a minute. Pour till full leave again for another bit, should be grand
February 16th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
I think Beer Snob was taken wrong. He just likes to tell me whay I like is not so good. He likes specific beers and not the ones I do.
February 16th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
For great ale on a Budweiser budget, nothing beats Pete’s Wicked! My friends who try it say they don’t know if they like it, then they kind of do, then it’s all they want. Hard to find, sometimes…
February 16th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Flying Dog is good, too, but pricey.
February 16th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Breceknridge Brewery has some good ones if you are looking ofr microbrews. I like Fat Tire, Skinny Dip, Trippel if I am looking to zonk fast.
Colorado has a ton of microbreweries. Tommyknockers has a good berry beer. I like the Belgium wheats and lighter beers as opposed to the darker beers like guiness.
February 16th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
J.W. Dundee’s Honey Brown is a good cheap beer, and if you’re in the Southeast I’d recommend trying Sweetwater 420 or Sweetwater Blue.
February 16th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
i suppose if price is no option there are tons of “better” beers, but for a good balance of taste and afford ability, miller genuine takes the cake
February 16th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Kostritzer = best beer of all time
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%B6stritzer
February 16th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
kiwiboi: yep – 2pm. With bells on
February 16th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
anyone tried little creatures pale ale? its comes from perth, australia. it goes down really well. its a must try if youre ever down there imo
February 16th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
I would like to recommend Blackened Voodoo from Dixie Brewing. Katrina took them out for a while but they are slowly working their way back.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Hey everyone, nice feedback so far on my list! While I agree with some comments about beers being left off the list, I wasn’t trying to list the worlds greatest ( then of course Belgians would dominate). It was more of a beginners list for those not “into” beer. More of a nice starter list. I personally hate bud and corona but included them due to popularity. Please don’t take this as the be all end all of beer lists. If you want to try some new beers, check out a few websites and talk to local beer stores, or find bars that carry smaller brews. I thought it would be a nice companion to the cocktails list posted a week or so ago.
Drink up!
February 16th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I actually just finished a Flying Dog Tire Bite Golden Ale, delicious.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
CORONA! It might be cuz I’m mexican!
February 16th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Tommyknocker Jack Whacker Wheat Ale – unfiltered light citrus flavor FANTASTIC
Guinness Harp – Wonderful light crisp lager
Anchor Steam Ale – Great California steam type beer creamy lager style beer fomented at higher temperatures for better mouth feel
Dogfish Head Indian Brown – My favorite brown actually brewed in the states. It is smoother than Newcastle and not as sweet yet with more body.
McEwan’s Scotch Ale – Scotch style ales are the beginning of what they make scotch out of, smooth creamy buttery complex and better with age.
O’dell’s 5 Barrel Ale – Only made 5 barrels at a time this beer is hop infused meaning after fermentation it is filtered through fresh hops giving it a strong flowery hoppy aroma. Terrific!
Rogue Imperial India Pale Ale – One of the best IPAs this is great on a hot summers day if you like a bitter hoped beer.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
hmmmm
I read all these lists about words and nouns yet have never heard of any of those fancy words.
Now I read this list and have drank over half of these!!!!
I must be doing something right!
February 16th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
VICTORY !!! The fact that you included Hop Devil is great, and it gives your list validity, even though it clearly belongs higher than Sam and SIerra. The fact that Bud is here….well, I get it.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
molson canadian or extra old stock.
Lowenbrow.
20 years ago it wouldn’t of mattered as long as there was a lot!
February 16th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Pretty good list. I’m not sure what to think when people say things like… “American Beer tastes like piss”…. never having drank piss myself. Obviously THEY have. Anyhoo, I do wish you’d have included Harp (Irish Lager) For me, it’s not St Paddy’s day unless I’ve had at least one Harp.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Belgian brewers have been perfecting their craft for hudreds of years and they are very good. However they work within very narrow parameters, that sometimes are even legislated. Since Jimmy Carter legalized home brewing in the 70s there has been an explosion of brewing in the US and as a result many new micro-breweries. This has reulted in a much more creative brewing industry in the US.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
One of those lists that is good but hard to agree with. Personally I think its hard to say which is the best 20 beers out of thousands it all comes down to personal tastes. For me I like Miller over Budweiser, I like local brews I think Great Lakes Brewery in Cleveland has some of the best microbrews in the country. Then again local beers from Chicago are excelent. I have to ask where the Heinekin is on the list and the Killian’s? Good list though
February 16th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
San Miguel anyone?! Its like a tall frosted holiday in the sun!
And all hail the almighty Stella…… otherwise known as ‘Wife Beater’ round these parts
dave4248 – I’ve only ever tried one kind of American beer, I think it was Amstel Light, and it just didn’t have the kick that Stella does…. but I think saying all American beers taste like ‘near frozen gnats piss’ (Al Murray’s words, not mine) is a little harsh!
February 16th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Kiwiboi; ha ha great ad
I don’t drink beer either, ‘cept on a hot summer day mixed with ginger ale….
February 16th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
mom424: try ginger beer. It is easy to make and you might like it. Some of our party guests were pooring it over the fruit salad.
http://www.recipezaar.com/154486
February 16th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Bud? Yuck. Can’t stand the stuff, foul aftertaste. If you want to put one of the big brands on there, put Miller. It is cheap, common, and of the budmillercoorsbusch set, definitely the best.
Ever tried Corona without the lime? *shudder*. I used to drink Red Stripe (when there was nothing else) but I started detecting a sweetness to it which I can’t stand in my beer, so I stopped.
Good list though, I like Stella, Smithwicks, and Sam Adams a great deal.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I thought two things could happen if I wrote a true “top 20″ list. #1 it is filled with Belgian and german beers no one has heard of and can’t locate and #2 it is filled with micros that are only available in certain states and again no one cares. At least people can try most of these beers with little effort or cost.
Hooegarden should have been on the list as well as great lakes. I hate heineken btw.
February 16th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
I’m with you Chestica! I’m amazed there aren’t any Czech and Slovak beers on this list. Pilsner Urquell, Zlaty Bazant and Kozel are outstanding beers. The Belgian beers I’ve had are really good too. American beers are terrible by comparison.
February 16th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Erdinger all the way. How Bud is in there I just dont know
February 16th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Boags? Cascade? Not one Czech beer? Pffft!
February 16th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
JwJwBean; I’ll make it in the spring for summer consumption; I’ll let you know…..
February 16th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I like Juice
February 16th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I will send you a better recipe. Hubby says that one is not so good.
February 16th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
Im buying all these beers when i turn 21
February 16th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
When I’m 18 sucker
:P
Ireland!!
February 16th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
For every day beer, I like Miller Light, otherwise, Blue Moon with an orange slice is great.
February 16th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Ok, the mere fact that there’s only 1 german beer on this list makes me wonder….
Seriously, where’s Löwenbräu, Warsteiner, Jever…?
Fantastic brews and of course true to the “Reinheitsgebot” which is the calling card of all german beers!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinheitsgebot
February 16th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
No one mentioned Magic Hat?! The #9 is awesome.
February 16th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
An Irishman, Englishman and Scottsman go into a pub and each order a pint of Guinness. Just as the bartender hands them over, three flies buzz down and one lands in each of the pints.
The Englishman looks disgusted, pushes his pint away and demands another pint.
The Scottsman picks out the fly, shrugs, and takes a long swallow.
The Irishman reaches in to the glass, pinches the fly between his fingers and shakes him while yelling, “Spit it out, ya bastard! Spit it out!”
February 16th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Belgium, Belgique and also Belgie.
That’s all you need to know.
They also make the best chocolate in the world.
And some of the worlds’ great humorists.
A self-indulgent persons’ paradise.
Oh and Julius Cesar famously said they were the bravest, hardiest people he ever fought.
(he never did get to fight the Scots)
February 16th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Ok- you save the list by including Ommegang (Hennipen is my fave of all time) and Victory (Hopdevil my fave hoppy beer)
Do yourself a favor and if you are a serious beer drinker, do away with most of the rest of the list (ok I drank Lager for 50 cents a pint in college-yum)and go to:
http://www.beeradvocate.com – ratings, events, beer stores.. GREAT SITE!!!
February 16th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Geekboy: true, true
February 16th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I think its true that this list is most likely to be the most impossible list to create – but, being an English man, please can stop calling Lager a Beer and vice versa!!!
They are seperate entities, served diferently, and created seperatly!!!
I drink Cider – perhaps I’ll create my top 10 of ciders!
February 16th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
And on a side note – it’s just occurred to me that “hardy” comes from the flemish “aardig” ( meaning ; solid, straight, decent, honest etc..). Literally – of the earth.
Wow. I love etymology.
February 16th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I’m partial to Hahn Premium, myself.
I’ve never actually tried it, but I like the name
February 16th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
One of the best beers I ever had was Ndovu. It’s brewed in Tanzania. I’ve looked for it in the states but the only African beer I’ve ever found here is Tusker, which comes from across the boarder in Kenya. Tusker is good but nearly as good as Ndovu.
If you ever find yourself in Tanzania order one, you wont regret it
February 16th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
What about magic hat? Mainly for the bottle caps.
February 16th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
I lived in Belgium for 2 1/2 years and I absolutely agree: Westvleteren is indeed THE BEST BEER IN THE WORLD.
I am very happy that you have chosen that one!!!!
February 16th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Budweiser is even on the list?!?! The best beer I’ve ever had has to be Kirin Ichiban from Japan. Second best has to be Leinenkugel’s “Summer Shandy” (regional brew from Wisconsin, USA). Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
February 16th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
ATTENTION: This list is about to hit the front page of Fark which is great. Unfortunately it means that comments can cause the site to drown and go down. For the sake of keeping the site up I am going to have to disable commenting on the site for now. I will enable moderation which means your comments will still count – but they won’t show up on the site until things settle down a bit. I am sorry for this inconvenience.
Anyway – Welcome Farkers! Fark rocks!
February 16th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
a suggestion: maybe put the country next to the beer name on the list
For those who are interested, here’s a list of Belgian beers:
http://www.dma.be/p/bier/1_11_uk.htm#A
1547 different ones !! and there are probably more
February 16th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
You have to try “Uerige” from Duesseldorf. Trust me, I come from the hometown of BECKS (that would be Bremen), but this is a different world, I recommend it highly. It is an “Altbier” and tastes , well, words fail me, just try it!
http://www.uerige.de/home.html
February 16th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Personally, I’ve always found Murphy’s stout alot nicer than Guinness.
They do a very nice ale in my local area called Enville. Its brewed with a touch of honey which gives it a slight sweet edge to it. Its a good ale if you’re new to drinking the stuff.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
This has to be the worst top 20 I’ve ever seen. Take the Bud out and replace it with the original Czech Budweiser (now called Budvar due to the financial clout of the US breweries) and you have the start of a good list. IMHO you should try Deuchars IPA as a good ’session’ beer.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
You guys know theres two different buds don’t you? The American version and the Czech are two totally different beers.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I really don’t know what to think, there’s some admittedly great beers and then some shitty ass ones you put up there because of popularity?
February 16th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
1. Newcastle 2. Sam Adams 3. Guinness…thats my list
February 16th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
I agree about the lack of central European beers; it is a criminal omission. We need Jever, Staropramen, Radeberger, Flower’s Best Bitter, Pilsner Urquell, Corsendonk, Old Pecuilar, any beer from Russian River…Sascha, ‘altbier’ just doesn’t travel all that well to the States and besides, thats the gift God gives when you make to Koeln or Duesseldorf.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
#2 Fark
February 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I don’t drink, but my father really likes Samuel Adams.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Roquefort Trappist Ale is the best beer in the universe. That is all.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
No Fat Tire? Blasphemy.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Corona is dog piss.
A product of marketing genius and frat boys.
Us Mexicans dont drink this stuff. Give me a Dos Equis or even a Tecate.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
You included Budweiser but haven’t included Alexander Keith??? Poor list.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Apparently those of you who put this list together never actually drink beer. For one, Budweiser isn’t beer, as much as some people will disagree. Bud is for people who don’t know what beer is supposed to taste like. I compare it to horse piss. Second, where’s Leinenkugel’s on the list? Have you ever tried any of their brews or seen how many world awards they’ve won for not only their seasonal brews, but the ones available year-round? I have personally drank every beer on this list, and you got a good number of them right. My advise is to go out and drink a lot of different beers. In the meantime, leave the lists to those of us who know what we’re talking about.
February 16th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
What about Shiner Bock?! or Killians Irish Red?
February 16th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Hoegaarden, Old Peculiar, John Courage, Magic Hat #9, Troeginator…you missed a bunch of good ones to include stuff like IC, Bud and Corona? And man, I’m from PA and while Yuengling is a good beer to have at a bar with only that, Bud and Coors, it certainly doesn’t belong in the top 5.
Other than that, not a bad list. Lucky bastard got to drink the Westvleteren…
February 16th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
The rocky mountain coolness of Coors Light has always been a favorite of mine, I really didn’t expect it to make the list, but I also enjoy Spotted Cow with orange, a must try for beer lovers.
February 16th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Hey–check out Shiner Bock. Or any of the other Shiner varieties…from a little ol’ town in Texas. Good stuff, very local.
February 16th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
What? No Moose Drool? Nothing from Unibroue in Canada? No Dunkelweiss? Why is Corona there when Mexico has real beers like Modelo Especial, Negro Modelo and Bohemia.
February 16th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Interesting list, as someone who loves beer and who beer hates I liked the list but enjoyed the comments more. (beer gives me hay fever, who knew?)
Personal Favorite is Guinness but almost ANY beer is better than NO beer at all ya know?
February 16th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Kokanee gold. Period, end of story.
February 16th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
It’s good to see Stella Artois on there. Yuengling as the top domestic? That sounds about right to me. I like their Black and Tan beer the best. The only other domestic that I’m really enthusiastic about is Shiner Bock.
February 16th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
You are young & stupid.
February 16th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
JwJwBean #44. I drive almost 900 miles to Colorado to get my Fat Tire! Can’t get it here where I live!
February 16th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
this list is completely moot without one canuckistani beer on it while bud makes the list. i realize your a yank and have flawed taste buds when it comes to beers and have to settle for whatever you got down there, but ive been to u.s. bars that carry molson and labatts and its all anyone buys, regardless of nationality
February 16th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
This is the most random, nonsensical, poorly conceived ‘ranking’ of beers I can even imagine. Please go kill yourself.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
i really like JW dundee’s honey lager.
course, i’m not exactly a beer conneisseur.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
San Miguel should be on this list.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Sierra Nevada what? They make a porter, an IPA, a stout and a barleywine and a pale ale.
As Michael Jackson would answer… My favorite beer is the one in front of me.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Please, enough with the lemon in Hefeweizen. That is an American habit that drives me crazy! I was fortunate to spend half my life in Southern Germany where Hefeweizen has it’s origins. I would place the beer much higher than ninth but that’s not my gripe here.
You will notice a couple things in that picture of the Paulaner at #9 above. First, and most important, there is no lemon in that glass. Secondly, you can determine from the official measures mark on the glass that this is indeed how the beer is served in Germany. Lemons are usually served only with the Crystalweizen, the clear version.
Since they blessed us with this great creation, they have the right to determine how it should be served. I have had this debate in almost every bar and micro brewery here in the US. I am at last glad to have evidence in the form of a picture ;}
Oh yeah, that Budweiser you saw everyone drinking in Europe. It is one of the most famous Lagers in the world and has been brewed in Czech Republic since before 1400. That’s right. Since before Columbus found the new world.
Ahueser-Bush claimed to have purchased the rights to the name from an immigrant in the 1800’s to profit from it’s world renowned reputation. It took until 1939 to get a resolution with the Czechs giving up rights to the name in the US. I heard there was another settlement a couple years ago but it is doubtful the American Budweiser will be allowed to use that name in Europe.
And just so you know, Bud is one of my favorite American beers. But the Czech Budweiser is in a class by itself and should NEVER be confused with the American knock off. ;}
February 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
Taking into account differences in taste, I still allow that several beers here shouldn’t be on any list of quality beers. Period.
For a unique craft beer, you must go to Louisville, KY for Blue Grass Brewing Company’s “Bourbon Barrel Stout”. Kentucky is the bourbon capital of the world. Bourbon barrels can be reused for whiskey or scotch, but *never* bourbon (by law). BGB ages their stout for 3 months in used bourbon barrels. This imparts a subtle bourbon aroma and finish to an already smooth stout.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
my favorite beer that is on this list is Stella Artois.
my favorite beer (which didn’t make the list
) is Sopporo
February 16th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
You have a beer list with American beer on it and not a single Canadian beer? There is a reason we make fun of it up here. And while I can’t judge against all of these beers, you can’t honestly sit there and tell me that Bud is better then Keith’s or Moosehead. And Corona as high up as it is?
February 16th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Yay #7, Alexander Keith’s and Moosehead are from my home town!
I was gonna say, don’t see a single Labatt’s or a Keith’s anywhere.
February 16th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Also Rickard’s.
February 16th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Not one even on the radar. This list might have been lame 5 years ago, but today it’s simply tragic. No Stone?
February 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Budweiser? It makes real beer drinkers gag! Iron City should only be served at sporting events in the Pittsburgh area. Yeungling is a good touch (oldest brewery in the US). Oh, BTW, Belgian beer is just a fad and will go bye-bye like all the “micro-brews” that were popular 5 years ago. It’s good brew, but it will be ruined by snobs and snot-nosed yuppies who want to look cool and drink it b/c it was written up in the New Yorker. Also, Aussies don’t drink Foster’s because it’s a gimmicky American beer.
February 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
This is the worst “Best Beer” list I have ever seen. Budweiser? Corona? Are you joking?
February 16th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Why no love for Canada? Good list nonetheless. Smart move putting a beer a handful of people have ever tried as #1, this way nobody can argue unless they’ve tried it. God, I wish i wasn’t at work, I’d grab myself a nice cold one right now…
February 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Anyone, ANYONE, that includes Budweiser on a list of ‘best’ beers opinion is automatically negated. Sir: Please enroll in some sort of rehab program, as your sense of taste has obviously been dulled by the huge amounts of low quality crack you smoke.
Westvleteren is just one of the most expensive beers, not necessarily the best (although I’m not saying I didn’t like it).
And the best beer is a three way tie between Pliny the Younger from Russian River, Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel, and possibly Piraat Amber Triple IPA (because I’m on an IPA kick this year, which is a way of saying that ttastes can be subjective, although I still maintain that the author has terrible tastes).
February 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
WHAT ABOUT DUFF???
February 16th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Kilkenny
Killians
Blue Moon
February 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
fat tire is my top for wheat ale….not much of a stout drinker but again this list isn’t a whose best but rather a must taste to know what’s out there.
February 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale #2??? You have got to be kidding. It tastes like it came out of a rusty pipe, and smells like urine.
February 16th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
shockingly this list is pretty good, my local watering hole has most of these….www.whiskeybardenver.com
except the last one
February 16th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen or Budvar some Czech Pilsner needs to be top 5. (im not Czech) I cant remember seeing anyone drinking budweiser when backpacking myself but I guess any beers as well distributed and well known does deserve a place
February 16th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
capitol brewery, middleton WI.
February 16th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
i’ve had regular Amstell while in the middle east. i said the same thing (have you ever seen regular amstell?) and then i looked across the bar and there it was!
February 16th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
i dont understand Jfrater, What is Fark, a siren call? Is it a wave warning that is a precrurser to an overload of traffic? Or do you give up your site so it doesnt crash, in order to allow more attention to seep through? a clear sky of a bigger exposure?cutting off the fan base for a larger one?
do you make money out of a fark front page, based on a beer list? how is allowing your site to “go down and drown’”"great”‘?
Anybody with a tech answer (or anyone smarter than me) would be appreciated.
just interested in knowing. This is in all kind curiosity.
not what is fark, but all the rest that I brought up here.
February 16th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
The best beer I’ve ever had was an experimental called Cold Hop made by the Boulder Brewery in, where else, Boulder, Colorado. That stuff was awesome, can’t wait until it comes out again in like 2011 when the hops population recovers.
February 16th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
I can’t believe the crud in this list! Red Stripe? Bud? Come on! In addition to beers from Germany, Holland, Belgium, the UK, NZ, and Australia(one of the best beers I’ve ever tasted was available only in Sidney), I’d add a few from the US and Canada, and selected other countries. But I think the author was a bit tanked, as he included what he thought was, “a pretty good cheap beer,” as one of the world’s top 20!!! Perhaps he doesn’t get around much!
February 16th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
No Heineken, Gordon Biersch or Crown’s? Nothing beats a Crownie!!
February 16th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
No Heineken, Gordon Biersch or Crown? Nothing beats a Crownie!!
Hmm…I keep getting “duplicate comment detected”. Nice, but it’s not showing the first one…
February 16th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Oh, should have read the above comments. Well, sorry for adding on this comment to the slow-down.
Nice job for getting on the front page of Fark though! Woot!
February 16th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Dead Guy Ale is the worst tasting thing ever made. An actual dead guy would taste better.
February 16th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Oh, my god. Budweiser is asswater. Somebody needs to stop listening to ads and start tasting beer.
Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Ale or Ruination IPA… now, THAT is beer.
February 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
My favorite is “Arrogant Bastard”
February 16th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
no UK ales……..get on the ball man, Adnams Broadside, London Pride, CHB Flint Knappers, Old Speckled Hen…..and don’t get me started on having an ice cold Bintang in Bali on a supper hot day……….travel son, travel.
February 16th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
An impressive list. However, I would’ve put Yuengling Black & Tan number #1, followed by Yuengling lager draught as number #2,, and never included Budweiser. It results in a headache. Also comments #6 and #16 apply. One word of caution for all beers sold in green bottles. Keep out of the sunlight or bright showcase lighting. The result is skunky beer. No, that is not how any beer should taste.
February 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Love the list. Hey different tastes for different folks.
My top five…
1) Angkor Wat (A Cambodian beer)
2) Pilsner Urquell
3) Prankster
4) Negro Modello
5) Newcastle Brown Ale…
February 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Sam Adams Winter Lager. Yum.
February 16th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
the budweiser available in Europe is not the american swill it is brewed in the little town of Budveis. Anheuser may well be in the process of buying and contaminating the beer just for the sake of buying the rights to the name in Europe. Surely a dark day for beers of the world
February 16th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Oh and light beer should never ever be on any list of top beers its swill and is suitable only for pig feed
February 16th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
IF you go to Hlland, all the Amstel they serve is just Amstel.
February 16th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
“The biggest beer in the world (or at least it seems). I remember backpacking in Europe and seeing people sitting at cafes drinking Bud when a host of great European beers were inside waiting to be tasted. I hate having to include this, but it isn’t that bad.”
This site is going way downhill. I am reporting this as abuse to Jamie!!!
Budweiser!? Aside from their Bud Light Presents radio ads I see nothing more than piss in a bottle.
Then again…I created that controversial list of mine. Maybe this is karma biting me in the ass!
My personal favorites are:
Rolling Rock
Honey Brown
Guiness
Red Stripe
PBR
and the infamous Tres Pistoles ale
February 16th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
FAIL!
This is a pathetic list for quality beers!!
Bud and several others should NEVER be listed as beer, as they are RICE WATER.
Missed a lot of Belgian, Czech and other imported beers.
Submitter fails, as he/ she has not tried enough brews from around the world to be a VIABLE CRITIC!
Come back when you have grown a few more hairs down there…
February 16th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Spaten Optimater.
February 16th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
What are this guy’s credentials? He’s got to be kidding. ‘Popular’ (e.g, Bud, Corona, Fosters) is not a synonym for ‘good’.
In any case, you are going to get better beer at your local brewpub than virtually anything bottled.
February 16th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
I realize that this beer is considered a “near beer”, but I like COORS’S Light as my 1st choice, and KEYSTONE ICE as my second choice. It may be noted that I am not a true beer drinker per se, I am more of a liquor drinker.
February 16th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Hey what about Tusker Lager? A quality Kenyan brew
February 16th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Many good beers on this list. Some that I like include…
Anything by Stone breweries (Arrogant Bastard, Ruination, Old Guardian Barley Wine Style Ale)
Spaten Optimator is a MUST try, dark beer, alcohol at the front with this sipper.
Skull Splitter by Orkney is awesome
Goose Island summer time ale
By Far though Arrogant Bastard is the most flavorful, NOT for the faint of heart!
February 17th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Yeah, that Budweiser you saw them drinking in Europe? You should have paid attention, that wasn’t American Budweiser, it was Czech Budweiser. All sorts of legal battles over the decades over there about that, plus the fact that Europeans think that your major American beers (Bud, Miller, Coors, ect.) all taste the same. I gave a Michelob to my landlord when I first got to Germany (before I learned what good beer tasted like)… he politely drank some, made a face, and told his son it tasted like piss. Budweiser wouldn’t sell over there.
February 17th, 2008 at 12:21 am
Interesting topic to broach as a teetotaller. You must be to have Fosters, Newcastle Brown, Corona and Budweiser in your list.
February 17th, 2008 at 12:29 am
I can’t believe that not only did Blue Moon not make the list, but it has only been mentioned once (I skimmed quickly) in the comments page. It is easily the best beer I’ve had. As a college student, I drink mostly Steel Reserve and Old Mil, but Blue Moon is the best of the “good beer” that I have had.
February 17th, 2008 at 12:35 am
something by Dogfish Head needs to be on there.
February 17th, 2008 at 12:59 am
Diogenes: it is a warning of impending traffic – in a wave so large that the site has gone down everytime it has happened. I figured people would prefer the site to stay up and not have comments than have the site go down in 5 minutes and – well, still not have comments
February 17th, 2008 at 1:19 am
My personal favourites (as a Belgian) are:
Barbar (made with some honey, very good)
Duvel !
Leffe
and many more actually…
As a normal beer i prefer Jupiler (more then Stella)
February 17th, 2008 at 1:43 am
is this a joke? worst list evar. i could name 20 beers brewed within 25 miles of me that would beat out more than half this list. budweiser? amstel light? corona? come on, are you kidding me? in the top 20 beers in the world?, I agree with Thomas… I could probably think of 20 belgian beers that would smoke everything on this list. waste of time
February 17th, 2008 at 1:46 am
where the f is heineken
February 17th, 2008 at 1:58 am
Clearly a beer novice. Terrible beers throughout with the exception of a few. Any Bell’s beers or Stone beers would blow half that list away. Not picking you apart, though. It’s interesting to see what beginners think is good. Cheers and keep trying more!
February 17th, 2008 at 2:10 am
Beer is like pizza toppings: get twenty people and you will get 20 different opinions. I can’t believe people are arguing over this.
I like my beer just like anyone else, and if I lived in the States, for a regular brew, I might (might I do say) drink Bud. Right now I’m having an Australian XXXX cuz that’s the cheapest decent brew here in Osaka (thanks Costco).
Personal favorites include Minoh’s Pale Ale (small microbrew north of Osaka, hoppy with a crisp finish), Kilkenny (I like the subtle caramel taste), Maudite (Unibroue, hometown brew from which I have been sick a few times from drinking too much, too quickly, but it is still my favorite from the excellent brewery) and Tucker Hefeweissen (very refreshing).
Instead of blasting others for their selections, tell us your favorites and try to be constructive with your replies…
February 17th, 2008 at 2:23 am
You folks obviously don’t know yer beer.Pikers!
When you grow up, maybe you can drink real beer.
San Miguel
February 17th, 2008 at 2:57 am
Interesting list, though a topic like this is highly subjective.
Personally, I have found a beer at one of the local establishments that blows me away. I’d be surprised if anyone else has had the priveledge to try it; its known around here as “Natural Light”.
With aromas that hint at midnight urine and vomit in the springtime, the texture of chemically enhanced engine coolant, and a taste that conjures memories of when my cat peed on my toothbrush, this american ale brings us all back to the age when we weren’t really sure of what we are supposed to be putting in our mouth.
From the first sip to the last cup in a 12 game rally in beer pong, this beacon of liquid luxury provides an experience that will certainly not be forgotten…until the next morning.
February 17th, 2008 at 3:17 am
gotta com to nova scotia and try Alexandr Kieth’s, people who love it love it a lot
February 17th, 2008 at 3:18 am
and yes my “e” key sticks
February 17th, 2008 at 3:24 am
i have that problem with my “” key. see
February 17th, 2008 at 3:36 am
your list sucks a fat one dude. you don’t shit about beer
February 17th, 2008 at 3:42 am
Ok im skimming the list here and i barely see anything about bud light! It’s the greatest beer. hands down end of story. you can shut down this forum now mr admin guy. No one in the south likes that european crap anyway.
February 17th, 2008 at 4:14 am
what an absolute joke of a list!?
February 17th, 2008 at 4:39 am
Good to see someone mentioned Little Creatures Pale Ale from Perth. Someone else mentioned a beer from sydney and i’ll hazard a guess at one of the Nelson’s range, just up from the Rocks. Or James Squire’s Malt Shovel range.
Fosters is a non-event in beers. Someone mentioned drinking XXXX in Japan as a last resort and i had to laugh.
You can’t really include an “international” beer in a list that is actually BREWED UNDER LICENCE (BIL) at a brewery down the road. This applies to Heineken, Lowenbrau, Budweiser, Corona, Stella, even guiness. Check the side of the bottle, folks, they’re all made locally to whereever you are, under licence.
Anyway without a doubt the best beer in the world is….
My own homebrew, because i know exactly what goes in it, including homegrown hops etc….
Seriously if you can’t brew it, then don’t bother critiquing it. It’s really hard to make good beer.
February 17th, 2008 at 4:39 am
This list is a joke, but I’m not laughing. How in the blue hell can you have a beer list and not include any Canadian beers? Obviously not as much of a beer fan as he’d like to think…
February 17th, 2008 at 4:44 am
Any beer without a decent collar usually sucks, like 90% on this list
February 17th, 2008 at 4:45 am
This is a horrible list of beers. I know that everyone has thier own favourites, but this list was obviously made by an American. Budweiser??? C’mon mate… Red Stripe is for chavs, and Sam Adams is a bit overrated. There are a millions beers just like it or better. If you really want to represent the micro-brew, Britain has hundreds, and they’ve been around far longer, not to mention other countries as well. Did you prowl the isle at the local supermarket for this shit? Get out more, and try a few more mate.
Best American micro-brew I’ve ever had was Fat Tire. But I’ve got a million more to go fortunately.
February 17th, 2008 at 5:30 am
Nobody’s mentioning any Polish brands, so I guess it’s my duty to do that
. They’re maybe not as popular abroad as Czech ones but they aren’t by any means worse. Believe me. And if you somehow spot Żywiec, Tyskie or Lech somewhere in your area you oughta definetely give it a try!
And I agree. Only Central Europe (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium) knows what a true beer really is :>
February 17th, 2008 at 5:44 am
Sorry but any list of “best beers” that has Fosters on it instantly loses all credibility..
February 17th, 2008 at 6:04 am
hahaha belgian beers rule =) Westvleteren really is the best beer of all
February 17th, 2008 at 6:17 am
I had to give up drinking beer. Everytime I would drink it, I would get ultra horny and pork the first woman I saw, no matter who…. fat, ugly, bucktoothed. Well, I knocked one up, and I now have fat, ugy, bucktoothed triplets. I hate my life and will probably kill myself soon. I blame beer.
February 17th, 2008 at 6:37 am
labatt’s blue should be on the list………. yuengling should be in the top spot………harp should be in the top ten as well as macabre(haifa, israel) This list cannot be real if corona is anywhere near the top 50,,,its full of mexican piss, and how can that be good???????
February 17th, 2008 at 6:47 am
I am so sick of beer snobs who feel the need to criticize any American beer or any “common” beer for that matter. I hate heavy micro brews and truly prefer a beer that’s cold and smooth.
February 17th, 2008 at 6:52 am
“Yeah, that Budweiser you saw them drinking in Europe? You should have paid attention, that wasn’t American Budweiser, it was Czech Budweiser.”
Bullshit! There is a Czech beer with a similar name as Bud but its label is totally different. Real Budweiser is sold throughout Europe and is very popular with the under 30 age group.
February 17th, 2008 at 7:15 am
maybe people drink Budweiser in a part of Europe,
but there is no nearly no bar in Belgium who serves it.
Same with the ‘popular’ Heiniken. Tastes like cat piss to me.
February 17th, 2008 at 7:37 am
Wow, I’ve only had four of these. I feel so uncultured.
February 17th, 2008 at 7:49 am
Lowenbrau Oktoberfestbier. Period. Drank this while I was in Germany in the early 80’s and it’s the best I’ve found ever. Wonderful flavor, smooth. Sam’s Club had some mini-kegs of it about 3 years ago, otherwise I’ve never seen it in the states anywhere. Also, an awesome seasonal is also from Germany. Parkbrau Pirminator. Damn near a triplebock! Drink 3 and stay seated near bonfires! The closest I’ve found to this in the states is Spaten Optimator. Apparently beers with “ator” in the name all kick your butt! Bell’s from Kalamazoo, Mi has a Winter White that is out of this world. Sam Adams Winterlager is a great one you can find most everywhere, but it’s only seasonal as well.
February 17th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Those of you that like Blue Moon (I do too), did you know that it is a beer made by the Coor’s company?
February 17th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Guinness? Budweiser? Corona?
Come on, this is just bad. At least you mentioned Ommegang, Victory, and Paulaner, otherwise I would have been forced to tear you a new one.
February 17th, 2008 at 8:47 am
hmmm, No mention of any of the beers from New Glarus? I’d of thought they’d have made the list. Hardcore beergeeks around the globe know of New Glarus, as well as most people in the upper midwest.
February 17th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Hey, you bunch of morons… Why wasn’t my favorite, Haffenreffer mentioned? What a great beer, and smooooooth! I drink 12 – 15 every day, and I love them. It is also great for scouring barnicles off of boat hulls!
February 17th, 2008 at 9:34 am
If there is a list of Top 10 crappiest beers, Coors would definitely be number 1!! That beer is HORRIBLE!!!
February 17th, 2008 at 9:48 am
It’s wonderful to read and find so many beer drinkers out there and the different taste bud’s to match. I guess that explanes why so many brewerys. My favorite, from Belgium is Leffe. Wish we could get more of it here in DC area, fresh of coarse.
February 17th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Samuel Adams Cream Stout > all
My Top 5 Beers
————–
Sam Adams Cream Stout
Michalobe Porter
Sam Adams Old Fezziwigs Ale
Michalobe Amberbock
Blue Moon
February 17th, 2008 at 10:18 am
good call on the sierra nevada pale ale. it’s choice.

I find it funny that Portuguese Beers that have won World Awards more than once (and it wasn’t for seasonal brews) aren’t listed here.
I say this list is a fluke and not to the trusted. When beers that have won world awards for years in a row are out, you need to wonder if this person really knows what he’s talking about.
Where’s Sagres Beer?
Where’s Super Bock?
February 17th, 2008 at 11:22 am
I’m with Jyves here. It’s easy to tell the beer fans from the beer bombthrowers, as the former know that the idea of a “one beer to rule them all” is a fantasy. Once we break it down to styles, yeah, then we can argue about examples within that style. Some of the stuff on the list is downright crazy, but there are a few there — even Guinness — that are a good place to START.
I might suggest that the casual beer drinkers give a try to Newcastle Brown or Sam Smith’s Pale Ale. I prefer the American Browns to Newcastle these days — stronger hop character, before someone asks, like in Real Ale’s Brewhouse Brown — but Sam Smith’s Pale Ale was probably the one that started me down the path away from low-quality beer. If you’re looking for how Budweiser really should taste, track down Budvar (Czechvar on the US shores, thanks to the idiots at AB) or Pilsner Urquell.
I saw plenty of signs for Budweiser (with the AB logo) while I was walking around Paris and Rome, and given the existence of beers like Fischer’s and Peroni, yeah, I can understand why they’d prefer [our] Budweiser to those. Hint: Stick with making wine.
Magnidude: You’ve just got to find the right American beers to discover that, yes, we make great stuff over here. Unfortunately, the crap we export from the macrobreweries tends to be filtered through goats when it’s created. In the meantime, have an Okocim Porter for me, as I’ll be damned if I can find that where I live.
For the Canadians, and I realize that they’ve since been bought out, but back in the day, a nice litre of Creemore Springs lager over a good lunch could cure a rainy day. I miss Molson Porter and Labatt IPA, but these days, Sleeman’s [any variety] and Wellington Iron Duke [strong ale] are, shall we say, common imports when I return home.
Also saw the reference to Bell’s. For my tastebuds, that’s one of the finest breweries in the US, and for those who like stout, you’re in big, big, big trouble if you visit, as you simply can’t sample all of their wares in one go. I’m very fond of the Kalamazoo Stout and the Cherry Stout.
Finally, a suggestion: Check out Garrett Oliver’s “The Brewmaster’s Table” for a wonderful book about beer and pairing beer with food. Not only does Garrett make incredible beer himself at the Brooklyn Brewery — his Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (an Imperial Stout) often makes lists of great beers — but I can thank him for turning me onto Saison, of which the aforementioned Ommegang Hennepin is one incredible example (but Saison Dupont is still the one to beat, IMHO). Belgian beers themselves are a completely different (and wonderful) experience, and should be sampled by anybody who says “I don’t like beer.” But I’ll save that for another list.
Well, now you’ve all gone and done it: Time for a beer. One Wasatch Polygamy Porter, coming up!
February 17th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Any list that includes Budweiser in the top 20 is completely, disastrously flawed. No amount of Paulaner or Newccie Dog or trappist beers will redeem you for your terrible taste, sir.
February 17th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
If you think those are the top 20 beers you really need to get out to Oregon…this list is slightly sad (Budweiser? Sam Adams?!?! Fosters!!!!!!! I wouldn’t use them for cooking).
February 17th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
What about Dogfish Head?!?!?!?! On several lists I have seen (for the Northeast) it is the top. I buy kits locally to make beer, and it tastes just like the Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA….great stuff.
February 17th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Wow! You are obviously not from around here boy… Have you ever been West of the Mississippi?
4 words. GO WEST YOUNG MAN
You have listed a bunch of boring, run of the mill commercial beers that can be bought in any WalMart (with the exception of Dead Guy which is fantastic).
Next time you are in Portland (Oregon not Maine), Seattle, or even Boise you will be amazed at the number of great beers you will find.
Finally… Bud? You must be joking. It tastes like butt.
February 17th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
I have two problems with this list. First, if it is a list of things you should try, it shouldn’t have so many middle-of-the-road light lagers and pilsners. 5 of the first 7 are nearly the same beer. Meanwhile there is 1 IPA, 1 Stout (and a weak one at that) and 1 brown ale, no porters, no ambers, no bitters, no bocks, no dunkels. Secondly, Oregon is the center of the craft-brewing Universe and of all that goodness you picked Rogue? Not Widmer Heffe, Bridgeport firkin IPA, Deschutes Brewery’s Black Butte Porter or Mirror Pond Pale Ale? And Seattle has some great brews like Red Hook. And you put Sierra Nevada in before any of those? Missed opportunity. Google “Portland, Oregon Brew Pubs” if you don’t believe me. You must be relying on whatever gets exported over to the East coast.
February 17th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
To all the people who criticize commenters for “bashing” such a subjective list: I only bash choices on this list that are universally (or nearly so) poorly regarded. Budweiser (in most of Europe it’s called Busch or Anheuser Busch or AB NOT Budweiser. The Budweiser you see in Europe is the Czech beer, which is now available in the US as Budvar – there are a lot of complicated multi-national licensing agreements involved with this), Foster’s, etc., while cheap, readily available, and mostly drinkable, are almost never on any other top 20 or Top 100 list. Looking at the list, I would say the author is relying on regional tastes, and that region is probably Pennsylvania or Mid-Atlantic USA. At the very least, this list should be split up by geography or beer type or both to make it more complete and/or objective.
February 17th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Love that I only have a few to try to complete your list. I also love any beer list that includes my long-standing favorite, Yuengling.
February 17th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
No Pabst Blue Ribbon? I cannot take this list seriously.
February 17th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Wow this is quite possibly the shittiest selection of beers… budweiser??? come on!
February 17th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
all these beers, including the comments, and not one mention of delerium tremens/nocturnum? jesus, it’s got a pink elephant on the bottle ffs. nocturnum’s stronger than wine, they’re belgian spiced beer and possibly the tastiest thing on the planet.
I’m amazed pabst isn’t on the list. I always thought it was THE cheap beer.
February 17th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
oh and just a quick thing… I don’t know about other countries, but in ireland bud is brewed by guinness. I actually drank a lot of bud when i lived in ireland because it was quite good, relatively inexpensive, and light. I was disappointed to return to the states and find it tastes like crap over here. It really is a much different tasting beer.
February 17th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
I’m Irish, if pull a pint of Guinness like that over here, you’ll get lynched!
Its the best you’ll get, but you can’t drink it in any old pub, its has to be kept moving through the pipes, so only drink it in pubs where IRISH people are drinking it, not tourists..
And bud tastes like strainings from the Devils jockstrap, the Czech version, Budvar is far superior, but Heineken should be mentioned, but Erdinger and Paulanner [sp?], should be mentioned , along with Brains.. Only Cork people drink Murphys!
February 17th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
fosters?! i even live in australia, but i don’t think i know anyone who will touch the stuff…
February 17th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Like #24 VonGoetz said, weihenstephaner has been brewing since 1040, and they dont export it if the supply is low, which is only brewed with local water, and they periodically have water shortages in that region.
No one a fan of Rolling Rock? Of course, theyre owned by Anh-Busch now.
February 17th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Foster’s: Australian for piss.
February 17th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
OMG! *hangs head in shame* Not again! what is it with associating Aussie beer & fosters! Its so gross, please if you ever do one of these list again don’t put Fosters on the list this is the worst Australian beer ever with XXXX coming in second worst. Please don’t drink this, you can’t even buy it in half of Australia, that should tell you something! I recomend to substitute fosters for Cascade (This is one of australias oldest brews)
or Crown.
Oh and just for a laugh we also have a beer called Piss & Piss weak
February 17th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Blue Moon should be on the list, great beer.
February 17th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Re: your #7 beer review: Although it’s not impossible that awards have been “garnished” with their brews, I think it’s probably a wee bit more likely their brews have actually “garnered” some awards.
I realize that it’s a list of your 20 most favourite beers and is, therefore, highly subjective, but to start it off with Budweiser? BUDWEISER?! When you look up “garnished” in a dictionary, look up “credibility”, too.
If you have to drink Bud, at least drink the version made in Canada by Labatt’s so you get some alcohol in it rather than the bottled water labelled as Budweiser they make in the U.S.
February 17th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Corona is not beer. I don’t know what it is, but anything served with a lime is NOT beer.
February 17th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Can’t believe you didn’t include Lingenkugel.
February 17th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
for a start.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD BEER, SOME ARE JUST BETTER THAN OTHERS.
lets face it its all beer and beer is good.
The truth about fosters is that it was quite popular during the 70’s and 80’s but during the 90’s CUB (carlton united brewers) switched to marketing it overseas rather than australia, so its popularity has dropped off to almost nill here. I am not a big fan of fosters out of the bottle but if you go to the Abbotsford brewery when it is brewed for most of australia it is very good from their tap.
my favourites are
anything from cascade, even their light.
Boags premium and draught.
anything from New zealand.
becks
stella
Lowebreau.
elephant beer
and despite what everyone says VB
February 17th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
225 Comments so far! Can we break the record? I love the number of people that hate this list solely based on the Budweiser addition (at #20 nonetheless!) No one has yet to mention Iron City! A true top 20 list would be near impossible due to not having tried every beer in the world. I will have more lists forthcoming!
February 17th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
You do realize of course that the record surpasses 1400?
February 17th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
FAT TIRE ALE, NEW BELGIUM BREWERY in colorado best i have had in the us but it is a micro. also like strohs and bud light and it would be pretty boring if everybody liked the same beer. remember variety is good
February 17th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
That’s it! New Belgium Brewery I missed typed and said Breckenridge Brewery.
February 17th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
I am amazed that no one has mentioned Stone Brewery out of Cali yet. Their Arrogant Bastard Ale is terrific plus they put out a Vertical Epic Ale annually, which is bottle conditioned and is supposed to hit its prime on December 12, 2012. Next one is coming out August 8, 2008. Nothing like collectable beer!
February 17th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
This should be a poll, but I’m too lazy to write one up at the moment. I’d like to add Grasshopper (wheat) and Warthog to the list, excellent Canadian brews. THE big omission though is Bass Pale Ale. Black and tans aren’t the same without. I’d also like to say kudos and agreed to the after mentions of Pilsner Urquell and McEwan’s Scotch Ale. As a surprise, I also recommend stout fans try Shiner Bock’s Bohemian Black Lauger.
February 17th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Jaime- you better try San Miguel Beer (Pale Pilsen), it’s one of the best beers maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
And why is Tsingtao Beer (China) not in the list?
February 17th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Blue Moon.
February 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
“The Budweiser you see in Europe is the Czech beer…”
WRONG.
There are 2 Budweiser’s that are available in Europe. One is the original Czech Budweiser (forced by AB to be called Budvar here in the US), and the horse piss called Budweiser in the US. In fact, US Bud is about the only US beer widely available in Europe which accounts for the bad impression Europeans have of US beer.
The truth is that the US is now the world leader in fine beers, at least in number and variety. We also have most of the fine beers of the world available in the US though they are probably not in the best of shape depending on where you buy them because of how they have been handled beer they hit the shelves. Pilsner Urquell is infamous for being often “skunky” because of the green bottle.
However, I repeat that the best beer you can get is usually at your local brewpub, “fresh beer”. Once again, the US (with Oregon being a good example) has more in number and variety than any other country.
February 17th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
I like this list, but I hate the Number 1 pick… not because of the choice, but because of the description.
You can’t just say the “Number 1 Beer” is simply the best and no question about it. You told us nothing about the beer other than its really good and then you gave us some silly little story about how you drank it one time.
And on that note, I’m not a fan of lists in which the least popular/least available option ends up being Number 1. I know nothing about this Westvleteren beer, so it could be immensely popular (like I said, you told us nothing about it at all) but if it isn’t very popular that shouldn’t inherently make it the number one choice. When I first began reading this list, I fully expected the Number One choice to be something that was popular, well liked among beer lovers, AND easily accessible (something like Guinness or Stella Artois). But you chose to circumvent the normal “top list” selection process by simply using the #1 slot to let us know about a beer that you had once.
At least give us some more information about the beer (a link to a review perhaps? Or a link on how to buy it?) rather than just coddle and confuse our sense of “what we know about beer”.
February 17th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Coors and Natty light/Natty ice are the worst beers you can ever drink in the entire history of the universe!
February 17th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Ok,
This isn’t a beer site, but c,mon. Budweiser is fukking dogpiss, end of story. Corona? Where’s DosXX? Also, there’s a reason Fosters remains unpopular in Australia: it tastes like ass.
Most of the others I can get behind, but where in the name of Almighty Bacchus is Dogfish Head?!!
Do yourself a favor. Go out to a reputable beer store and find yourself some Dogfish Head 60 Min.
Drink it.
Like it? Welcome to the land of good taste. Now go try the 90 Min., and come to terms with the fact that all the other excellent brews on this list will never satisfy quite like they used to.
Don’t like it? By all means go back to your Bud Light and your Corona, but please stay at least 50 feet away the hell away from any “best beer” threads you may encounter in the future.
Violators will be mercilessly ridiculed.
February 18th, 2008 at 12:26 am
Glad to see Sierra Nevada made the list. I went to college in Chico, CA where it is brewed, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
February 18th, 2008 at 12:42 am
I don’t drink beer on a regular basis OK?!!
February 18th, 2008 at 2:14 am
Dead Guy! I’ve had that one and loved it. It’s very strong, but with a sweetness I’ve never tasted in a beer before. I could have gotten so sloshed on this beer.
The best locally-produced beer I’ve had in Kansas City is Boulevard Wheat. Their Pale Ale is more popular, but not with me.
February 18th, 2008 at 4:34 am
Knappstein reserve lager is one of the better Australian beers going around at the moment, along with the trusty Little Creatures Pale ale and Bluetongue Pilsner.
European beers: you would struggle to put together a top 100, and as far as American weak watered down gnat’s urine goes… why would you bother?
+ 1 for the home brew…
February 18th, 2008 at 6:46 am
I must really be in a very specific mood to drink beer. I’m more of a cocktail guy.
February 18th, 2008 at 6:50 am
Budweiser wasn’t always “horse piss” (haha). They definitely changed the formula a few years ago. I remember thinking, “This doesn’t taste right.” and thought maybe the bartender pulled the wrong tap, but then I notice my Bud at home tasted different too. I don’t really care which brand I get, except Miller seems to taste skunky to me.
February 18th, 2008 at 7:24 am
“The truth is that the US is now the world leader in fine beers, at least in number and variety…”
Quantity does not equal quality.
B/C of laissez-faire quality control and near zero concern for purity of ingredients (a la the German Reinheitsgebot purity laws), major US beers will never be world-class. There are and always will be quality smaller and/or traditional brewers in the US that will produce extremely good beer, but when they get bought out by Anheuser-Busch, Miller, or Coors, you can bet they will start churning out horsepiss.
February 18th, 2008 at 7:25 am
FAIL!
Sorry but this list is crap.
Budweiser? DO NOT WANT
February 18th, 2008 at 7:27 am
Two (three?) words: Dogfish Head.
Based in Rehoboth, Deleware, with restaurants in Gaithersburg, Maryland (lucky me!!) and Falls Church, Virginia, this microbrewery kicks your microbrewery’s ass.
Their Indian Brown Ale is spectacular, and have you ever tried a 120 minute IPA (20% abv)?
Plus, they make something called the Midas Touch Golden Elixir (9.0% abv), produced from the oldest known recipe in the world, “of barley, white Muscat grapes, honey & saffron found in the drinking vessels in King Midas’ tomb.”
Beat that.
February 18th, 2008 at 8:09 am
TMo-
I love Dogfish 90 minute. I’ve tried the 120, but it just wasn’t for me. We can’t get the Midas yet in Central VA, but I hear it’s worth the trip to Falls Church.
February 18th, 2008 at 8:34 am
I’m a big fan of Goose Island. I live a few blocks from the brewery in Chicago, it’s my favorite bar. A few of my all time favorites – ‘312′ Urban Wheat, Honker’s Ale and the Nut Brown Ale. So good.
February 18th, 2008 at 8:44 am
i think tou are mistaking about budweiser,no one drinks american budweiser in europe you must got it mixed with chezch beer
February 18th, 2008 at 8:53 am
C’mon guys – if you really talk about the world beers than do your house work first before coming up with such list.
Just a short trip to Germany and/or Belgium would help you learn about the real beers like:
- Weihenstephaner (preferably dark – dunkel) Heffe Weissbier
- Koestritzer or
- 7 deadly sins…
Wake up and cheers!
February 18th, 2008 at 9:38 am
IRON CITY BEER!? The only 20 list that beer could get on is the Worst 20 beers of all time! This was the very first beer I ever tried. It was so horribly foul, I did not touch another beer for 10 years. This beer tastes like is was made from unfiltered water from the Monongahela River, and laced with battery acid! It may have been used to clean out horse stalls too, I don’t know!
IRON CITY BEER!? Dude, you need to drink more than 20 different beers!!!
Ten years later, I go out to a microbrewery with a buddy and I ordered an iced tea. Well, my friend wouldn’t hear of this and hounded me until I tried a beer. (I wasn’t a prude. I did drink, just NOT beer.) He ordered a sampler, 8-12 shot-sized beers. All were OK, some were pretty darned good, but one stood out in particular. (Don’t know the rules of posting here, but it was the Southend Brewery in Charlotte, NC.)
Speaking of Charlotte, The Waldhorn German Restaurant serves up some authentic imported German brews.
Since that enlightening day, I have become quite the beer afficionado. I even brew my own now. NO KITS EITHER.
I have to say that Sam Adam’s standard Ale and Lager are really good. So is their Cherry Wheat. They can keep the fancy seasonal flavors for themselves.
It goes without saying, Germany beats all when it comes to beer. And I’m not saying that just because they invented beer. If you want to learn about beer, take a guided tour of Germany’s and Austria’s bierhaus’s. (Yeah I used an ’s on a German word, it’s called Germish!)
Every village seems to have it’s own Biermeister, complete with it’s own twist on Bier.
Although Germany had to dump the Beer Purity Laws (Reinheitsgebot) to join the E.U., you won’t find ANY Biermeister giving a rat! They still only brew the old way, using only barley, yeast, hops, and water…PERIOD!
Good luck finding a German that will even consider buying something that does not meet the old laws either.
February 18th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Pgh_boy- I thought Germany still had the Reinheitsgebot in place for beer brewed in that country, but doesn’t hold imports up to the same standard? Either way, you are right, nearly every village it seems has its own brewery and brewing traditions. But all of them I’ve tried still stick with the old ways. My absolute favorite German beer was brewed in a little town near where my wife grew up, and I could only find it within 75 miles of there (Hasseroeder).
February 18th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Oh, and my wife and I call Germish Danglish (Deutsch/Anglisch). The only thing that bothers me about German beer is that most of the ancient Bavarian hop fields are now giving way to canola fields. Hop prices are shooting through the roof over there, and so is the beer. (BTW- Did you know that, in Bavaria at least, beer has a special tax-exempt status b/c it’s considered “Lebensmittel” – an essential grocery item like milk or bread?)
February 18th, 2008 at 10:12 am
Grumpus, I thought there were breweries that didn’t follow the letter of the law, especially if they are from former East Germany. They get to use cane sugar for example. Those breweries don’t have to change.
I have tried Warsteiner’s (Verum) here in the states, but really want to try their Dunkel.
Funny how the englisch refer to it as Germish. I work at a German company and the Germans call it Danglish.
Ich möchte auch weiterhin das Gespräch auf Deutsch, aber mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut.
February 18th, 2008 at 10:20 am
I can understand 90% of German (except for highly regional dialects like Bavarian and Berliner), but I have a tin ear when it comes to speaking it. After a couple of beers though…
Warsteiner here is alright, but I think it goes through too much bottle shock getting here. That used to also be a highly regional beer (north/central Germany). I was shocked the first time I saw it here. A lot of former East Germans seem to like Pilsner Urquell. The exception you talked about may explain why…
February 18th, 2008 at 10:25 am
This list is garbage
February 18th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Simply put and well-put, Hawk. The list is questionable, but we seem to be on the verge of developing a nice little flame war here, so please stick around for the comments…
February 18th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Woo Hoo!! Sierra Nevada! I live in the city where they brew that! Chico, CA!
February 18th, 2008 at 10:55 am
> Spaten Optimator is a MUST try, dark beer, alcohol at the front with this sipper.
> Spaten Optimater.
> The closest I’ve found to this in the states is Spaten Optimator.
I was relieved that some people out there mentioned my favorite beer. Bitter head, full body, creamy finish, all with a good alcohol punch to it.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Can’t believe you put Bud on the list but left off the far superior Budvar! The original Budweiser!! And what the hell is Fosters doing on there? You need to go to some different bars buddy!
February 18th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Bud, and ANY other mass-produced beer with adjunct fillers like corn or rice, should only be served to death-row inmates so they know what hell is going to taste like.
The only reason why most people drink swill like this is either: 1. they are dirt-poor college students and can’t afford anything else, 2. they are NASCAR fans, or 3. their daddy started getting them drunk in kindergarten and that’s the only beer they’ve ever known.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:32 am
VELEBITSKO – best beer (try) Made in Croatia
February 18th, 2008 at 11:33 am
Born and bred in LA I’ve gotta give Brew 102 an honorable mention… The brewery built right next to the LA river, ya couldn’t help but think thats the brew water they used for that stuff! LOL!!!
No… The best beer ever (for 1000’s of years to the present) its in every country and very hard to find, its… FREE BEER! Even Corona and Budweiser is drinkable when its free. Now I live in the Mecca of beer, Southern Germany, and I could only get a lazy smile going over this list.
Cheers
Skunknr1
February 18th, 2008 at 11:37 am
PBR, Moose Drool, Labatt Blue
February 18th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
How can I get ahold of Iron City or Smithwicks?
February 18th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Dave, where are you located? Iron City Beer is from Pittsburgh.
February 18th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Yeah newcastle!!! My fiancee introduced me to this beer and I love it!
For a good Canadian beer try Sleemans. THe Honey Brown is good but I prefer the Amber Ale.
I also enjoy a good Corona with hot wings.
February 18th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
SocialButterfly, I hope the wings are triple battered in pure habenero so you can’t taste the Corona. Do you mask the yuck with lime, salt, hotwings??? Most people have to squirt extra stuff into Corona to stop the involuntary heaving.
February 18th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Are you kidding me? You obviously haven’t tried much beer. Stone, Russian River, Bell’s, Three Floyds? If you can try any beer, drink anything from Three Floyds, out of Munster, IN. Some of the best beer in the country.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I’m sorry, but this is a terrible, entirely Western beer list. Honestly I can understand throwing in Bud for a bit of irony, but — and I recognize these lists are entirely non-professional — you do an amazing disservice to artisan beers and basically anything brewed with quality. Sam Adams? Sierra frickin’ Nevada? I can’t believe it. I respect the cleanliness of this forum and will refrain from swearing, but among the many, many self-described amateur beer snobs I know this list was acknowledged as nothing new to worthwhile beer discussion.
Exceptions: Trappist ales, Sam Smith’s and Yuengling. Fine choices all.
I love this site, I read it every day, but every once in a while these lists can’t even fake objectivity. Get yourself to a decent bar.
February 18th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I am ABSOLUTELY asking to get cyber slapped: how about colt 45? (Is that even really considered beer?);)
February 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Grolsch is the best beer in the world.
February 18th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
actually one of the top award winning beers in the world is Prestige beer from haiti
gold up winner
February 18th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Amanda: Colt 45, Olde English, Kobra(ew), Malt liquors. If it’s in a forty oz. bottle in America, chances are it’s not A Good Beer, it’s crap. As for anyone who thinks PBR, Coors, Natty(whatever) is “Freakin’ Great”, You’re a Freakin’ Idiot. They have their place, Frat parties, Prom night, Truck pulls……. I could go for some sushi and a Sapporo right now.
February 18th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
1. Newkie Brown – very nice
2. Sierra Nevada – blech, awful stuff
You forgot a couple of other great mexican beers, made by the same group that makes Corona Modelo, and pacifico
February 18th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
There are plenty of #1 crazy impossible to find beers in the world. But that’s what makes them uninteresting. Any beer you can’t depend on isn’t worth ranking at #1. Maybe #2 or an honorary mention or something.
I agreed with the top 5 (well, except for Yuengling being there. What the hell?) but would replace #1 with Thomas Hardy’s pale ale. You can FIND this stuff (albeit it’s hard) but it’s crazy strong and bottle conditioned. Oh: and it tastes like leather and blood. Mmmmmmm.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
yeah… the whole colt 45 thing… sarcasm… hence the “is it even considered beer”.
February 18th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
You must either:
1) live in Western PA
or
2) you went to college there
…because NO ONE would add Iron Sh#tty (as it was know when I attended IUP) to ANY list of good beers and still be able to maintain a clear conscience!!!
February 18th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

February 18th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Before I say anything else, I have to reveal that Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is brewed by Kenny Grossman, who is my cousin. So I admit I’m prejudiced, and therefore pleased to see this next to the top of your list. I’m glad you like it so much!
That said, I also love Pilsner Urquell, as well as a lovely little brew called Point Beer which comes out of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. I went to college in Minnesota, and I remember many occasions when my friends and I would hop into somebody’s car and make a run over the state border to fill the trunk with cases of Point. Too many parties featured Moosehead (bleah!), so it was great to have a really good beer to serve instead!
February 18th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Get a clue, idiot. NOt everyone is as beer deprived as you are. Read a bit and THEN drink some beers and THEN throw out a list. And please, drink some fucking real beers. I challenge you to a beer of, you twitFUKK.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Here, here for Oregon beer!
February 18th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
re : Dogfish Head’s Midas: It’s not all that and a fucking bag o chips. Pilsner Urquell
; Gag me with a fucking boring spoon. can i take a fucking nap now?
Please, people, get a little edimacted with the beers of your country and then maybe some others. Bottle conditioned beers are WWWWWAAAYYYYY diff than other beezos. and lag/pils/ipas/apas/filetered wheats/unfilteredwheats. for fuckks sake, lets condense this down a bit. are we not me? we are devo? Let us please have some dileniation in our categories.
February 19th, 2008 at 5:03 am
No Heineken ??? Why? You even put Budweiser (probably the worst beer I’ve tried), and not even the original Czech Budweiser…
February 19th, 2008 at 6:59 am
I Can’t Believe It !
You try to look like serious people, by putting the trappist beer “Chimay” in the top. But you forget (or maybe don’t know in US) the real best beer in earth….
DUVEL. A Belgian beer. Triple fermentation. Made traditionaly near Anvers.
Duvel Home
February 19th, 2008 at 8:47 am
Hands down the best Canadian beer is Sleemans Amber Ale!
February 19th, 2008 at 10:05 am
Fosters being “unpopular in its home country” is because its a fuckin piss beer. Corona isn’t a great beer but definitely has a time and a place, no need to be hating on it. Definitely not a top 20 beer but not horrible. I’d throw Fat Tire (and a few other New Belgium brews), Bohemia, Russian River, and PBR should replace bud at the top as the piss beer of choice.
“Heineken? Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!”
February 19th, 2008 at 10:27 am
I’m from Ireland and my favourite is of course Guinness but only from the local pub…quality differs vastly from place to place…dont even get me started on international guinness or cans of guinness!
Mmmm. guinness.
February 19th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Oh by the way, Leff is quality as well!
February 19th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Budweiser should be nowhere near anyone’s top 20 list. It’s the devil’s piss.
February 19th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
So THAT’S why it burns on the way down!! Thank you Homer…
February 19th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 19th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
As the man said at the start “sure to incite a minor riot” but also said “not saying these are the best”.
Always an argument about what is a beer lager stout pilsener etc.
For my 2 cents worth, Fosters is the worst beer ever. I spent 9 years working in the UK and every pub I went into noted my Aussie (that’s ozzie not ossie for you Yanks) accent and asked me if I wanted Fosters. My reply “I wouldn’t drink it in Australia so why would I come 12000 miles and drink it here?”
Guinness is a good stout as long as it’s genuine Irish brewed Guinnes and not made under license. But the best stout in the world as confirmed at the 2004 International beer festival is the Port Dock Brewery Black Bart Milk Stout. Only available on tap at the Port Dock pub in downtown Port Adelaide South Australia. According to my wife they also make the worlds best alcoholic Ginger Beer called Ginja.
Finally a riddle that is regularly asked in Pommy pubs when ever anyone asks for a Bud (American)
Whats the difference between American beer and making love in a canoe?
Nothing, they’re both fu**ing close to water.
February 19th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
jert- Huh??
February 20th, 2008 at 12:32 am
the beer Nastro Azzuro is the favorite of many people in Italy.
February 20th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
I would have to say a lot of disagreements on this list but in all fairness to the list maker. Beer is like religion & politics you could agrue till death….oh and never bring up those 2 things when you had too many.
February 20th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
ASAKI – also a goodie from Japan…. try it.
Otherwise Macs Spring Tide beer in NZ is great, and low carb too.
GENERALLY ANY BEER WILL DO….
February 21st, 2008 at 9:44 am
Budweiser, in the top 20? You have got to be kidding me. Drink ANY good beer and you can piss a Budweiser!
February 21st, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Too many cheap lagers on their…. and Amstel Light? That one is not even good for a light beer, let alone a good beer at all.
Merlin – you’re giving Budweiser too much credit. If you drink some good beers, you’ll piss better than Budweiser.
No New Belgian beers? Fat Tire anyone?
February 21st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
YES! Just my type of list. Some of the best beers that I have ever had are…
Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA
Dogfish Head 90 min
Damn Barcelona
Ballast Point Yellowtail Pail Ale
Now who says women don’t know beer. Come see me!
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:22 am
I was pleasantly surprised to see Yuengling near the top of the list. Discovered it a few years ago and it has been my favorite ever since.
February 24th, 2008 at 8:35 am
Sam Smiths and Guiness I agree, excellent beers. No lager should really be on this list though. Coopers Sparkling Ale is a wonderful beer if you should be lucky enough.
I notice a few people have rated Japanese lagers?? They are nothing special and should be rated on quality – not price.
February 26th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
I work 2 blocks from Sierra Nevada and my neighbor is the nighttime brewmaster there.Hence Free Beer!!!!!!
February 28th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
any of the old oregon and california microbreweries generally suck now and have been surpassed by young guns. widmer, bridgeport, deschutes, sierra nevada, rogue, all these are on there way to becoming third rate. come to this part of the world right now, and revel in the delicious beers to be found in small breweries literally everywhere!!! too many to even start to name. if you haven’t visited in awhile you have no idea. portland, oregon rules! just don’t move here please.
February 29th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
have you ever tasted austrian beer like stiegl, murauer or stiftsbräu
March 1st, 2008 at 10:45 am
Sam Adams winter lager with a shot of Jaeger mixed in.
March 7th, 2008 at 7:58 am
Iron City?? I’m from Pittsburgh and love the stuff, but I know that it is sh*t. How can that, Stella, Bud, and Amstel Light make it on this list?? Ugh.
March 12th, 2008 at 11:57 am
What? This list is absurd….whoever composed it has clearly never tried many beers and certainly hasn’t been to Belgium or Germany in a long time. Stella?! FOSTERS?! What a cunt. Try drinking some real beer. Take a trip to Antwerpen and try some De Konnink; that would be a good start.
March 12th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
This may not be claiming to be the “best beer in the world list”, but it still recommending that you drink some of the worst beers ever brewed. If you had twenty beers to try before you died, would you seriously even consider the likes of Fosters or Stella!? If so, then you probably shouldn’t be composing lists of the “top 20 beers.” Go to Belgium or Germany and try something like De Konnink. In the mean time, I suggest you do your homework….cunt.
March 12th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Monteiths!!!
March 18th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Amstel has so far been the only beer that I’ve truly liked. There are beers that go nicely, and beers that you can drink, but Amstel has been the only one so far that I’ve actually enjoyed drinking.
On the same note, Heineken has been the worst one I’ve drank.
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:58 pm
While it is, of course, a matter of personal taste, your list has some major problems, many of which have been explained above. This list actually caused me to go from unregistered lurker to account-holder, just to respond. My 2c:
No legit top 20 list would have the following- Bud, Fosters, Red Stripe, Corona, Amstel. Nostalgia and popularity have no place on a list of this importance. I know I’ll be hated, but whatever: I wouldn’t even put Guinness on my list. It’s not even the best Stout around, even if you are into such beers.
A few suggestions next time you hit BevMo or whatever, in no order:
Saison Dupont
Abita Turbo Dog/Abita Dark
Anchor Steam
Full Sail Pale Ale
Delerium
Firestone Double Barrel Ale
I’ve never tried some of the beers on your list… I’ll give them a shot.
March 24th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I’m a real ale girl, but I have to admit I’m not an expert and I guess there are some who would laugh at my choices! I tend to like Wychwood beers (all of them, though Goliath nearly defeated me!), Old Tom, Spitfire, Black Sheep and Badger Golden Champion and more. I also like a lot of lesser known ones that I buy because they’re local to me.
I do dislike Budweiser, and think it tastes like the fizzy water you got from those terrible Soda Stream abominations, but I appreciate why that (and others) are on the list and Tanglefoot, say, isn’t. Budweiser, I hate to say, is the well known love of newbies … it tastes weak enough to get used to the taste of beer and it’s so well known that you can ask for it at the bar with youthful, swaggering, false bravado. Like my friend, who hates asking for beer advice and tends to buy some really awful stuff if he can’t ask me what to ask for in advance. He also doesn’t know when beer has gone off and will act like he likes it!
I guess that since taste is subjective, some beers have to be on there simply for being well known!
March 30th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
I’m from Pittsburgh, which is where Iron City is from…I have had it many times and I don’t like it. But I’m proud it’s from here!!! Also Rolling Rock is made in Latrobe, Pa which is about 30 minutes from where I live. Rolling Rock was the first beer I ever had and was a great “TEENAGE” beer lol!! Fun times! I am absolutely in love with Sam Adams Boston Lager and Winter Ale. Amazing! Yuengling comes in at a close second. As for Bud…YUCK!! Should not have even been put on this list. Delirium Noelis a German brew that is pretty tasty…YAY for beer!!!
March 31st, 2008 at 2:20 am
Actually had a new one earlier tonight. Hells Belle, a North Carolina micro brew. I gotta say Mighty tasty, and really strong. Had my last one about 3 hours ago and I’m Still Doing Good!
April 2nd, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Ok so i havent read all 313 comments so I am unaware of these brands being mentioned already.
But, my favoutire beers have to be Tooheys extra dry (australian), Brahma (brazilian) and Tiger beer(Asian??)
April 9th, 2008 at 10:59 am
“This beer basically stands alone in the stout category. It’s truly the only beer that you can recognize from across the room. …”
Acknowledging the fact it was pointed out that Guinness ’stands alone in the stout category’, Guinness is NOT a BEER!!!! I’m sorry here but it’s just not, it’s a stout and that’s it.
Anyone here who has posted and IS Irish.. oh no.. How could you let that get by without comment?!
Guinness is a STOUT, not an ale, not a beer; but a stout.
(and I don’t even drink it that much. I’m just very ..Irish.)
I don’t like beer; cliché right? Tastes like piss and all that? I’ve tried a fair few. I found one, however, in a restaurant, by complete accident- Thai beer. Try it. Singha is the name of it, and it is very palateable. (”,)
April 9th, 2008 at 11:01 am
Singha is good. Very crisp.
May 2nd, 2008 at 3:54 am

May 18th, 2008 at 9:07 am
i’m just glad you got it right about fosters not being popular here in australia – for good reason too (it’s crap)
May 20th, 2008 at 3:19 am
this is the worst compilation of top beers!
whoever agrees with this list is a moron…Bud, Amstel, iron city,corona…..yuck!
and Chimay being after stella…???
VIctories Golden Monkey much better…
Sam adams is pretty gross…
what about anything from Weyerbacher (especially Quad)
or Magic Hat
i am just terribly dissapointed thinking I might see some awesome list….
May 21st, 2008 at 4:22 am
Not a bad list. But why is Bud on it?!? It’s like the fast food of beers and doesn’t deserve to be on this list!
May 25th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Although taste in beer is purely subjective I can’t believe Bud and Fosters are on here!
They should really be replaced by German lagers due to the purity law in Germany!
But ey, its all down to taste.
Your method for pouring a pint of Guiness is slightly out aswell… it should be poured until just over 3/4 full and left to settle.
Good things come to those who wait!
June 4th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I’ve tried most of these (except number one – where the hell do you get it?), but I am a little disappointed there were no Canuck brews listed. Beer is like the law up here. One that no-one has mentioned is Hobgoblin by Wychwood – quite tasty, with an unusual but pleasant chocolaty undertone. Try it if you can find it; it’s delicious and the bottle/label is pretty cool.
June 6th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I really enjoy this list and plan on trying as many from it as I can get. I really enjoy Guinness however I would have it be a bit higher on the list, only because it is a hearty beer that is meant to be drank whilst sitting. When I am playing beruit with my friends I could not imagine wasting such a good beer. I am a big fan of Bud Select I think it is absolutley delicious. I also love most of the Sam Adams brews, Heineken, Molson, Ship Yard ales, Rolling Rock, and Harpoon
June 12th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
wheres the bud light haha man i love beer blue moon is also really good i love mexican beers ahhhhh i just love beer it truly is a wonderful tasting drink
June 19th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
I like LaBatt blue. Modelo, DosXX,and more I cannot think of right now. But Bud is not good. Even when it’s free.
June 19th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
bud is the king of beers get it stright
June 20th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
if bud is the king of beers, you’re the queen!
June 21st, 2008 at 7:19 pm
No PBR?? For shame, it won a blue ribbon, which means it’s a winner. It also means that PBR belongs on this list higher than bud or amstel…philistine.
June 23rd, 2008 at 12:02 am
“STEJAR(OAK tree)” romanian beer, almost 8 grades of alcohol. Very strong shit and very bitter. I like it.
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:11 am
haha im the queen of beers wow u got me there but…. im american so of course i like american beer such as bud light i was raised on the stuff but as for Not Jake u never could be me im untouchable so shut up retard…..good list tho my brother keep up the site
June 24th, 2008 at 4:20 am
@ Petey McGee: You rule! Lindemans is my all time favorite beer! It’s great you know this one…
@ Alex: Westvleteren is one of the hardest beers to come by. It’s always made in the same quantity (which is few), and it’s sold out every year. It’s still made like it was a couple hundred years ago, that’s why it’s so special. you have to make a reservation on the beer phone, give the license plate number of the car that’s picking up the beer and you can only go once a month per car. Check out the website: http://www.sintsixtus.be (there’s an english version too)
You can only buy this if you agree not to sell it on after you buy it. Of all the Belgian (in particular the trappist) beers it is the best one, maybe after you try it you’re convinced.
@ Logic Bomb: Yeah… Delerium is heavy stuff. The pink elephants should drop a hint in advance, but it’s often too late when you realize it lol
To everyone else: if you ever visit Belgium (or Holland, Germany…) don’t, I repeat DON’T order Stella! For they will laugh at you. Order Jupiler instead. You’ll be happy you did it.
July 7th, 2008 at 6:48 am
where is the heavy, or becks, leffe, grolsch or carlsberg?
July 7th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
sagres
July 15th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
san miguel!
July 17th, 2008 at 10:07 am
I would replace Paulaner with Franziskaner. To me, it has a much cleaner, crisper taste. I would also move it to #1 since it’s my all time favorite beer. During the World Cup in Germany we were out drinking this stuff all night long and none of us had a hangover which goes to show the quality of the beer. I have no idea how sierra nevada is #2, it’s absolute piss water. Same for Bud. Bud is only good to drink for beer pong, that’s it. Other than that, I’ve had almost all of these beers and they are all really good.
Another “beer” that everyone should try at least once in their life is a Radler. Radler is a drink I had in Munich that is very popular during the summer. It is a helles (light colored) lager mixed with lemonade. We drank a couple liters of it one afternoon and I gotta say, it’s the most refreshing beer I’ve ever had.
July 17th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
For those of you who didn’t know, Budweiser has had a very open stance on keeping marijuana banned. They thought it would damage their sales. Thankfully, With the sell to InBev (a Belgian brewing company) the politics of drugs vs. beer has been wiped clear, at least in the case of Budweiser. So now I can stop protesting whenever someone hands me a beer at a party.
Keep in mind though, they (InBev) are not going to change the formula. So you can still have that Craptastic taste that you know and love!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Budweiser was first made by the Czechs a long time ago known as Budweiser Budvar. Now THAT Bud is real beer. I have a feeling that since Anheuser-Busch is owned by europeans now, they’ll let the Czechs use the Budweiser name and the american bud will have a different name…could it be? No more bud light?!
July 17th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Just a change of ownership and maybe a little restructuring. Nothing else.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I know a guy that worked there for 22 years and was laid off the day after InBev bought it. No retirement or anything, just cut him lose along with a couple thousand others. Not that I care or anything cause I hardly ever drink the beer but you never know, could happen. The Budweiser trademark is constantly being contested over so I don’t know what the new owners will do about that.
July 17th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
It sounds like they scaled down and shafted your friend to save money and make the deal go better. Typical corporate BS. And people wonder why there are so many depressed drunks.
July 21st, 2008 at 2:09 am
How could you include Foster’s in this list. I don’t know a single Australian who actually drinks this unadulterated bat’s-piss – and I’m Australian!!!!!
July 27th, 2008 at 3:43 am
I think that Carlsberg (Denmark) and Duvel (Belgium) is missing:-)
July 27th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
It’s a travesty that there are no Canadian beers on this list.
July 30th, 2008 at 10:21 am
I’ve gotta say, I drank Carlsberg freshly brewed when I was in Denmark and it just wasn’t that good. Same with Tuborg. There was another beer called Royal something or other but the danes referred to it as Royal Headache…for good reason. Duvel on the other hand is drinkable.
July 31st, 2008 at 10:13 am
Dont know if anyone has mentioned it yet, But what about Killians Irish Red.
August 1st, 2008 at 11:19 am
What about my HIENEKIN?
August 1st, 2008 at 11:31 am
What about PBR?!
Canadian beer, hmm….Moosehead is pretty good but not top 20.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:04 am
what about shiner bock!?!?
August 26th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
You have terrible taste in beer. Bud? Really? REALLY?
Better than Heineken, Molson, Kilkenny, Hobgoblin, Worsteiner, Rickards, MGD, Harp, or Cooper’s?
And Corona? Sam Adams? Sick, man… just sick. I’m surprised that Old English isn’t up there.
August 26th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Bloody hell! Not another moniker rip-off. Who are you, (351), and where in shit’s name did YOU come from? This aka Spanner posting here. The genuine article. Beware all imitations.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
the fact that budweiser is on this list and Spaten is not is truly frightening in terms of the world of great beer.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:22 am
Alexander Keith’s India Pale Ale from Nova Scotia, Canada….the very best to br found in the Great White North.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:24 am
Corona is a horrible yuppie beer… tastes flat and watery- very over-rated
September 3rd, 2008 at 5:50 am
MENABREA nicest beer of ever (italian beer)
September 9th, 2008 at 10:05 am
What about Smithwicks?
September 16th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
How come Heineken didn’t make the list?
September 17th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Anchor Steam is an outstanding domestic brew, while France’s Fischer, Czechbrau from the Czech Republic, and Moosehead from Canada are a little difficult to find in the US, but well worth the search.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
How hard is it to find Heineken in the US?
September 23rd, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Pretty good list; I’ve tried most of them.
Guinness is decent and I’ll go down’a pub for one of those. The stuff in bottles isn’t near as good as draft. And, yes it is Stout, not beer.
Dos Equis is another long-time favorite. But only the darker one. Beats Corona, which is just OK. XX is great with real Mexican fare.
The Sam Adams varieties are excellent– currently the Octoberfest is available and quite good. The Red Ale is pretty good, too. Even their Light beer is good.
Bass Pale Ale is one of my favorites as well, as is Newcastle Brown.
Two Anheuser-Busch products I like are Amber Bock and Porter. Let’s hope AB keeps moving in this direction, away from the tasteless, sweet sody-pop.
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Budvar is the nectar of the gods…truly. If you needed one more reason to visit Prague, this is it. You can get a proper ‘pint’ (22 ounces) for about 3 dollars.
The sad truth is that most beer does not travel well and has a very short shelf life.
And Corona? It’s not terrible, but there are many better Mexican beers available. That’s one advantage to being a couple of hours from the border…good Mexican beer and good Tex-Mex; neither of which is available much farther north.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:57 am
Jonathan:
Heiniken is easy to get in the US, its just not as good as the Heiniken in Amsterdam.
September 25th, 2008 at 3:04 am
anybody heard of San Miguel Beer?
September 25th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Really? I’ve Heineken here in Canada, and it’s really good.
The Heineken from Amsterdam, however, I don’t know about…
I guess I have to take your word on that one…
September 25th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
San Miguel? No…
October 23rd, 2008 at 9:31 am
Samuel Adams is great. I do think that with the amount of ppl who drink the great american lager it should be higher. or at least take corona’s place
October 24th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Put Bud on list ? What about Czech’s Budvar – the True & Original & Budweiser pilsner ?
October 25th, 2008 at 1:13 am
bud is american p*ss water. shiner (from shiner, tx. made by german and czech immigrants) should be on here, but unfortunately it’s not even sold nationwide yet
November 17th, 2008 at 5:51 am
BUDWEISER ? it Should be entered in the Water category. It’s flat, devoid of Body. how can something so watered down be legally called beer?. I recommend “Bell’s” of Kalamazoo, MI
November 22nd, 2008 at 6:40 am
I havent tried a single beer in this list except for budweiser beer, and i didnt like it.. it tasted sour and didnt have a good kick. But there’s a beer here in the Philippines called Red Horse Beer and it’s the one and only beer in my list. It’s cheap as crap(probably a dollar would get you a liter)and has a really hard kick so you’ll get the most out of your money and after a few bottles it’d start tasting sweet. and i mean sweet in a sugar way(i dont know if this goes for all beers)and it’s best ice cold. and another chinese beer called Tsing Tao and it’s very sweet with through out the whole session and has a low alcohol percentage(perfect for long drinking sessions). i hope you guys get to try these beers and have the same opinion.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:26 am
Good list)
And thank god, Heineken is not on the list. That is not beer..it’s just something liquid and disgusting.
Cheers
December 8th, 2008 at 9:05 am
Speaking of Amstel, I HAVE seen regular Amstel – they sell it (for sure) in the Lesser Netherland Antilles (Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire). It’s actually really, really good. I’m surprised the US hasn’t imported it. Oddly, they do NOT have Amstel Light there, though – they sell Amstel “bright” which is more like Corona than Amstel light. Weird, but true.
December 9th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Okay great list first off, I’m not gonna argue too bad. However I believe Henieken or how about…….und…….und…..und becks? Both are 10 times better than budweiser
December 15th, 2008 at 2:39 pm

What a terrible list! I wholeheartedly agree with Newcastle, Sierra Nevada, Guinness, Sam Smith’s, Rogue, and Sam Adams. But Budweiser, Corona, Amstel Light, Iron City, Foster’s, and Yuengling?! Are you joking?
February 9th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Also, I know I’m very late on this, but Guinness is indeed beer. Almost all stouts are ales. They are brewed using ale yeast and ferment at ale temperatures. All beers can be classified as ales or lagers. There are also lambics but they comprise a very small category.

Had a chance to buy a bottle of Westvleteren in Las Vegas but I thought 75.00 for a 12 ounce bottle was a bit too much.
Arrogant Bastard and Pilsner Urquell should be on this list.

I had to stop reading this list when I saw that the person who wrote it thinks Paulaner goes perfect with an orange slice
If you think a hefe like paulaner needs an orange slice then you know absolutely nothing about beer and this list should be rendered completely void and invalid. Now crappy hefe like pyramid or widmer needs an orange or lemon because they don’t even know how to make it right, it’s just added to suppress the horrible aftertaste. I’ve been all over Germany and had just about every type of beer there and never once did one come with any fruit in it. And by the way, Paulaner is not even close to the best hefe. Try one called Aventinus, it’s a wheat doppplebock…unbelievable.
And where is Duvel?? That stuff is amazing. And please get rid of Sam Adams, that is the absolute worst beer ever created. Only morons who don’t know how to brew beer think putting a shit load of hops makes a beer taste good.

I am Australian and was interested to see this list. Fosters a top beer? I know no-one that dinks it. If it is a worldwide favourite then it is not beer that I like so much.
Fosters is crap.

First off to reply to some earlier posts, anchor is agreat beer, especially their porter. Little known fact, they are actaully the brewery that saved craft brews in america before it became popular. Great Lakes (cleveland ohio) makes a ton of great beers, especially their christmas ale and blackout stout, for the ones that like a true strong stout. Neither are sold year round, as their edmond fitzgerald poter is their best year round beer.
second, terrible list, corona as one of the top 20 beers in the world? seriously? and Budweiser (and I love 5 minutes from one of their main plants in columbus, its a get drunk beer, not a top 20 in the world). And sam smiths is an extremely overpriced organic beer that comes up short on taste. Disapointing list, but good to see other peoples responses around the world of what they enjoy

April 26th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
This list should be entirely composed of Belgian, German, French and English beers. Primarily Belgian!
May 6th, 2009 at 10:53 am
I agree with having more Belgian and German beers on the list… and Philippine’s San Miguel Beer. If I’m drinking another brand of beer, that just means I’m out of San Migs
May 12th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

July 5th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
anyone tried Fruli here? it’s a bizzare almost strawberry cider tasting beer from Belgium…
And yes Hobgoblin is a good real ale, but i’d really suggest going to a beer festival or two (well as many as possible… 15ish?) before judging which are superior.
Hah and i may be young comparitively (20yo) and i do appreciate a cheap (or free) drink but man… corona and budweiser? really? Just get me a nice cold pint of Fursty Ferret, Blandford Fly or Tanglefoot.
All this is just my opinion, and i’ve been raised by a real ale affectionado… so yeah peace out
