Modern Dry Cleaning was discovered by accident when Jean Baptiste Jolly, a 19th century chemist noticed that kerosene spilled on a dirty tablecloth dissolved the stains. So was the Vacuum Tube (called a "Valve" in Great Britain) that became the basis for radios and amplifiers until the Transistor, and later the Integrated Circuit (chip) were invented. Edison was looking for a way to prevent black soot from the filament of his light bulb from dirtying the inside of the bulb. He tried an electrically charged plate to attract the plate, and noticed an increased voltage on the plate. He patented the effect (called the Edison Effect) but didn't know what to do with it. A few years later John Ambrose Fleming realized the significance of the discovery, and made a radio tube to demodulate broadcasts. Later, others adapted the tube to make amplifiers and the rest is history!
