I agree that the exorcist should be the number one horror movie, however, Hannibal Lecter was one the most horrible sights I have seen when he was wheeled out on that dolly with the mask (restrain) on his face and in a straight jacket.
Hard to say what is the BEST horror movie. I think there are a number of horrors that I think tie as being my favorites, because each of them creeped me out good and well when they came out. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), the Philip Kaufman remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Exorcist (1973), Jaws (1975), The Haunting (1963), Night of the Living Dead (1968), The Grudge (2004) (and its Ju-on originals), The Ring (2002) (and its Ringu originals), Alien (1979), and Aliens (1986) all count as some of the most effective horrors I've ever seen.

I must say that the recent release of Insidious (2011) is ranking pretty high. No movie gave me this many chills since The Grudge, and that says a lot. But it's not at quite the same level as the others.

Jaws and The Exorcist are the most successful of all the movies I list here. Young people these days need to understand just how shocking these two movies were for their time. People were literally running out of the theater to throw up. (And not because they were drunk!) There are so many over-the-top horrors nowadays that audiences have become desensitized, so its a lot more challenging to make a frightening horror movie anymore.

I agree, Zak. "Psycho" was great. And it is remembered because the killer is very real and onscreen. That's one of the keys to making a film that people remember. One of the greatest horror films is now almost forgotten. I mean Robert Wise's version (about 1960) of Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House."

"The Haunting" is one of the most horrifying movies ever made, and it is totally wasted on modern audiences who are used to seeing the actual monster. Another movie where you never see the actual monster is Jacques Tourneur's "Curse of the Demon."

My all-time favorite would be "Exorcist 3." The first in the series was incredible for how well it was done, but for many of us the idea of exorcism was nothing new. The second featured RIchard Burton invoking the demon Pazuzu, and it was hard not to laugh in the scary parts.

But the third Exorcist movie featured a demon telling a cop about the "innocents he's dragged off to Hell." This was the movie that shattered our cozy conceptions of Good and Evil. We'd been taught that if you were good you went to Heaven. This movie told us that good people can go to Hell also.

The typical slasher flick may scare you for hours or days. "Exorcist 3" is a scare that lasts a lifetime.

Psycho. In terms of scares, there may be other films that are more horrifying, but this one is much scarier on a psychological level. The fact that we actually identify with and feel sympathy for a brutal murderer is the true horror of this film. It makes you question your own morality, and wonder how someone who seems so nice and pleasant on the outside can be so sick and twisted on the inside. Speaking of twists, this film has a great one (although most already know it by now). I also think that this film is really effective after being viewed a second time, when you know Norman is the killer. This is for the reason I stated before, that you start to identify with this brutal killer. Overall just a fantastic film, and one of Hitchock's best.
