The stabbing death of Meredith Hunter at Altamont did occur during "Under My Thumb". That song....as well as "Sympathy For The Devil" and possibly a third tune....were interrupted due to fights breaking out in the audience. Altamont was also notable for being the Stones' first live performance of "Brown Sugar".

Other memorable live performances that stand out are The Doors' shows in New Haven and Miami (both of which ended with Jim Morrison's arrest), The Who disaster at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum in Dec 1979 in which 11 fans were trampled to death, and the controversial "Celebration of Life" festival in Louisiana in June 1971.

You know, someone on this list said something about Johnny Cash performing at San Quentin not being included on here and I agree completely. That was an awesome gig. Now, on to the real reason I decided to post a comment.... Nirvana.

Now, I'm going to start with 2 things: 1- I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, and 2- I'm a HUGE fan of them.

Here's where I stand on it: Kurt Cobain, for all his faults (and he had MANY), was a very gifted songwriter. The Unplugged performance was nothing short of captivating. However, I will concede that his and Nirvana's name are dropped a little too often these days. Were they a good band? Yes, very much so. Were they the best example of rock music in the 90s? No, not really. Think Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machiine... These were all very good bands and better examples of the new order of rock in the 90s.

BUT...

I don't like people saying Cobain was worthless. He most certainly wasn't. I also think that the people who rag on his guitar playing are not the most open minded folks, either. True, there is a lack of solos, and he was very sloppy, but... Wasn't that kind of the point? Nirvana's appeal was that they WEREN'T one of those bands with guitar solos after every chorus, a huge stage show, and what not. They were a stripped down, play the songs and get out, kind of band. And for the record, people who say that 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is overplayed, I've got one thing to say: The word 'overplayed' is... OVERPLAYED. People throw that word around all the time and frankly I think it's immature. Good music is meant to be enjoyed over and over again. That's why they sell albums and singles... so people can play them ad-nauseum. People who slag off bands, singers, and songs as overplayed are just people who are never content with anything, period. Everything always has to be better and better for them because they are never satisfied. You try to write a song that gets driven into the ground... see how far you get.

And one last thing: As for the people who can't resist the urge to say some snide remark about Kurt Cobain's death... It's time to stop that shit. Think of how his mother, father, friends, and DAUGHTER feel everytime you say something like that. It's rude and offensive. How would you feel if when you died your loved ones had to deal with people making callous remarks about the way you passed on, suicide or not. Yes, the man had some serious issues, and yes, suicide should never be your solution... But please, have some respect for the ones left behind.
