James Hudnall:
Avatar is actualy more of a copy of a 1957 book called "Call me Joe" by Poul Anderson.
the book features a paraplegic person who connects with an artificial lifeforem to explore a harsh planet. the character than proceeds to "go native" as he spends more time connected. Even the alians are blue looking indians.
If that is not a copy, then what is?
p.s. I also found Avatar derivative and trite.

Thanks for writing the list.
As a Sci-fi fan, I always appreciate the helpfull nod towards some original material.
Since reading this, I have collected Wasp, Iceworld, and Mission of Gravity and look forward to reading them (they have to be added somewhere into the long list of books in my reading list).

James,

What the hell. Ego-surfing on a Saturday and you commented on an old list of mine.

I literally PROMISED a friend -- genuine James Cameron fan-boy -- that I would go see Avatar in IMAX 3d. 60 miles one way.

Glad I did, though, as long as I had to see it; the movie would have been unwatchable without the visual spectacle.

You say derivative and trite. I say you are being too kind... to call that a "story" is a joke.

Guess what? While I watching it I kept thinking "if only Cameron had done this for Midworld and been true to the book, it would undoubtedly be my favorite movie of all time."

But he didn't.
