Also, Frank Langela was astounding in Frost/Nixon, it is hard to imagine a better job, but I haven’t seen Hopkins’ performance, so I can’t compare

only qualm is that Peter O’Toole’s performance in Lawrence of Arabia isn’t on the list- no argument needed

I would put Denzel Washington’s Malcom X portrayal as a runner up, probably not top 10, though

When I first saw Der Untergang with Bruno Ganz, I was amazed at just how well he was able to protray a man who has become so deeply entrenched in mystery and mythology as all famous leaders do, that it sometimes becomes hard to discern what the real Hitler was like. Ganz's performance is probably the most accurate protrayal of what happened in that bunker in Berlin two weeks before the collapse of the Third Reich.

The Last Emperor is one of my fav movies of all time. If you have not seen it, I would HIGHLY recommend it. I love to watch it over and over again…ITS THAT GOOD!

@sidvish – Yawn. The arguments you make are so old. That too based on selective comments made by the Mahatma with no thought put on understanding the context in which they were made. I guess some extreme right wing website has influenced you. Go read up some more on him and come back. But please do not bring those “he hated Jews”, “he slept with young women”, “he loved enemas” crap allegations. Best, read his autobiography where he bares his soul and actually converted me into being his admirer.

Anthony Hopkins never could convince me as Nixon. I watched the film not long after it came to video (as I was doing a paper on Oliver Stone), and to this day all I remember of the film was how *not* like Nixon he looked. The still photo seen above is probably just the vaguest resemblence he has.

Now, for comparison, I haven’t seen “Frost vs. Nixon” (I plan to when it comes to DVD), but Frank Langella makes a far more convincing Nixon. I know this film hadn’t been released yet when this list was made, but I had to bring it up.
