As a survivor myself I can understand this very interesting site. I have a very unique survival events in the archives of aviation history. My book "PAN,PAN,PAN, A Survivors Story", goes into very details of the survival soul of the human being.

113. you gotta be kidding: You are absolutely correct! Flying a plane, any plane, is not for the untrained. That's why, as I said above, I never fear flying with my husband along. But if somebody I didn't know just jumped up and said "show me to the c*ckpit", I'd have major concerns. There is only one place they keep the c*ckpit, so if the volunteer needed directions to it, I'd rather just jump!

you know flying is very serious business...in personal or commercial. No planes are the same...there are different gauges and not all are equipped with an artificial horizon (most experimental).
There are planes that have a tri gear and ones with a tail dragger...both require different landing styles.
But all this seems to be ..to me anyway.. is just to scare the crap outta people and I find no humor in it what so ever.
I enjoy flying and I hate it to see things like this....
If you cant fly, and theres an emergency, dont go by the reference material here....go by what air traffic controller tells you. It would be a real rarity of an occurance of this as well....there are MORE car accidents then plane accidents....think about it. And if you think it necessary to take along the guide from here when you are on a plane, you neednt be in a plane....trust the pilot...you trust the bus driver???
Besides if it were so important for you to know, dont you think that at preflight the stewardess would explain this to you as well????
Come on peeps!

111. cyncity:...how the hell would i land a plane??
****
Borrow my husband. I never fear flying in any aircraft. He was an Air Force navigator for 20+ years, could pilot too, in those big cargo planes which could hold other planes.
I know that in an emergency my husband could take the controls of a passenger plane and fly and land it with ease.

A recent study done among avid flight-simmers in the actual simulators used to train airline pilots revealed that most of them crashed the plane, even with instruction. As someone who has actually landed Cessna 172's I can tell you that theory and reality are two very different things. You have to factor in things like ctosswinds, altitude of the airport, turbulence, etc. A heavy airliner is a very complex machine and takes years of training to master. A first-timer may get it to the airport but setting it down in one piece comes from practice and an understanding of the physics of flight. Even a light plane can be a tricky beast to land.

What about one for a helicopter? Make sure to add really dramatic instructions including how to avoid RPGs while you lose control of the tail rotor, and how to make a really dramatic crash landing that'll get you injured, that'll lead to an insane rescue mission that only leads up to the death of more teammates, and in some instances a total loss of an entire platoon or whatever.
