Let us begin your musical education,
1) You mentioned Heavy Metal, but you didn’t include any of these greats in the same sentence: Iron Maiden – they were part of a very influential group of British bands who came under the banner called the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (N.W.O.B.H.M) – these guys have influenced another one of the greats: Metallica – the biggest selling Heavy Metal that is currently going.
2) Kiss – Everybody from Nirvana to Van Halen owes these guys.
3) Led Zeppelin – Duh!
4) AC/DC – Need I go on?

Get Manowar the ***** outta there, switch the order or Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and stick Metallica in there at #2, and you have a respectable list. I’ve noticed this site seems to have something against Metallica, so I expected this list to be incredibly biased, but to actually claim that a band like Manowar has had more influence in the metal world than Metallica is beyond *****ing blasphemous. This list is about influence, not personal preference, and it is undeniable that Metallica has influenced heavy metal, possibly more than any other band (save for Black Sabbath), for better or for worse.

@ willem : You have made an excellent comment by saying that Led Zeppelin was not a Heavy Metal Band, when in fact they we’re a Rhythm And Blues band, its just that the music is revved up a few notches to make it sound like Heavy Metal. I saw Ronnie James Dio (I still have a hard time accepting that he has passed on) and Dio had THE BEST Heavy Metal Show that I ever saw and to boot, I saw him on Halloween night of 1985. One last thing, I saw Rainbow back in 1982 and was disappointed with them. I guess Ritchie Blackmore was having an off night and then to rub salt into the wound, the warm-up group was The Scorpions and I found them to be much better than Rainbow.

Black sabbath is where it started, led zeppelin was awesome, but not heavy metal.
I would include metallica. Also Dio. This goes to show that there are so many good metal bands that a list of 10 is too short. Rainbow was pretty brilliant as well.

I also like blue oyster cult.
