Life is beatiful is so bland, patronyzing, at times plain stupid, that makes you want to eat coal. Wanna know a good film from Benigni? "The little devil": that's very nice, Walter Matthau is in it and he is GREAT.
Bertolucci is too much of a mindless comunist to make it into my tastes. Same thing goes for Antonioni. Besides he has to merit of having discovered the talentof Monica Vitti. Quite a find! Except that Antonioni was wasting her explosive comedy talent into boring burgeois bitter ballbusting blatant bullshite. As for Fellini i'll go for "Amarcord" (i remember) any day over 8 1/2. Leone can make an awesome movie but it is not on the same level of the other names of the list.
I think Pasolini is my all time favourite. Not just as a director but as a writer. He also was quite an art's critic. i ruled out two for being comunist and elected a comunist as my favourite. The difference is intellectual honesty.
Quite a paradox with italian culture is the role of the Comunist Party. To the one side the Party promoted, financiated, endoresed culture on a wide range of fields. At the same time the aim of the Party was to conform, unite and command over the intellectuals linked to it. Conformism and censorship side by side with a push for revolution and innovation. That means that for an intellectual to obtain to Party's "Seal of approval" he had to abide with each and every aspect of the Party's politics. While Bertolucci and also Lizzani (not on the list) were just instruments of the Party, Pasolini was a unique indipendent intellectual. That is why he was outside of the approval of the Party most of his life.

I love 81/2! Has to be one of the greatest films ever made. I know the BFI voted it the 3rd best of all time. I love the Italian language version with the Subtitling, that way you can listen to it the way it was meant to be heard....

I don't really know much about the Italian film industry so this is a great list for me to start with. I do struggle with foreign films sometimes because of the Softel Subtitling but if the film is engaging enough then often I enjoy foreign films more so than the blockbusters!
