The List Universe Cookbook
- Published July 1, 2008 - 52 Comments
As of today, in celebration of our birthday, we are launching a cookbook concept. What we want is for you to send in your favorite and best recipes and we will put them altogether in to a book. We will probably distribute the book in electronic and hard copy – so you will be able to give them to friends as gifts or keep them on your own bookshelf.

When you send in the recipe, please be sure to use imperial (US) measurements (this makes it easier for us to format consistently). Also, tell us how you want your name to appear in the book – for example we can print your real name and your listverse username, or either of the two. PLEASE also ensure that your recipe is sent in accurately as I may not be able to test all myself.
You can send recipes in of any type – we will categorize the book when all submissions are in. There is no deadline for submissions – once we have enough we will let people know here.
To send in your recipes, email them to recipes@listverse.com.
The formatting of our cookbook should be similar to the one you can preview here.

Will those who contribute get a copy too?
July 1st, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Aah so you’re finally getting the cookbook idea moving! I can’t wait, judging from some of the commenters on the food lists, this’ll be a pretty damn good book!
July 1st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
this sounds awesome, can’t wait to buy it!
i’m just learning how to cook myself, and your lists on here about cooking have helped more than you will ever know (even though i’m still a little hesitant to get rid of that microwave, lol!
), so it seems only fitting for a cookbook.
cheers, and congrats on the 1 year, it seems like only yesterday i had nothing to do at work till i stumbled upon the majesty of listverse… hook, line, and sinker, man
July 1st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Diamond_dragon: It is unlikely – there is going to be a big overhead for me timewise as I will need to enter and format all of the recipes. Having said that, for an electronic copy it will only be a nominal fee. For the physical copy, it will depend upon the best price I can get from one of the online publishing-on-demand places.
July 1st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Oh – I will include the cooking lists from the site in the book too.
July 1st, 2008 at 3:20 pm
ooooo i got a recipe for a donut looking cake that incorporates two kinds of cake into one with a chocolate fudge on top. never has any human being resisted my cake. i inherited it from my mother who got it from her who got it from her mother before WWII before they had to flee poland. i am sure you will think it among the best in the world. nothing ever came close from anything i ever had in a bakery or off the shelf.
July 1st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
JF this is absolutely an amazing idea! I don’t know if I have anything great to contribute, but I will definitely be ordering a copy!
July 1st, 2008 at 3:34 pm
The best I can do is donate the instructions off of a Kraft Mac’n'Cheese box… Oh well.
July 1st, 2008 at 3:47 pm
wonderful, just wonderful!
i’ll get to work…
July 1st, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I like the idea but are you going to sell it from this site alone? Because, I can’t see much of a market for it otherwise.
Also, listverse keeps logging me out. Is there a problem here?
July 1st, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Just when I thought ListVerse couldn’t get any better…
July 1st, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Yay for the cookbook coming together.
I can’t wait.
July 1st, 2008 at 5:47 pm
dang, theres a lot of new things
July 1st, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Yes Yes Yes!! I love to cook! Yea!
I have one small problem. All my recipes are from cook books. Should I site my source, or just not submit. Please let me know protocol. I don’t want to get anyone in trouble. What if I give it another name?
July 1st, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Prepare yourself for lots of crazy Tempyra recipes
What’s the deal with sending recipes from other people’s cookbooks? Do we have to modify them first?
Also, what about my own recipes (which I am more than happy to contribute) but are already online on my blog?
July 1st, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Oh and are you going to test all the recipes yourself JFrater?
July 1st, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Woohoo!!!
I also use cookbooks but when I get to cook a dish a few times, I tend to customize them for my taste so I’ll be sending those customized recipes instead.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Wow- a cookbook I might actually read… my family will thank you.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Vera Lynn: If you modify the recipe sufficiently it is not a breach of copyright
Tempyra: recipes on your own blog are fine. And I will test some but probably not all recipes – so make sure they are right
July 1st, 2008 at 8:44 pm
jfrater: Most of my recipes involve booze, usually wine, so you might wanna test them
What’s Imperial (US)? Cups and spoons of things? Pounds and quarts? Or litres and grams? I can never remember which is which.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Is there a deadline for this? I’m on vacation right now and all my recipes are a couple states away. I love to cook and I’ve got some fabulous old family recipes I would love to share with the listverse.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
JT – the logging out is a bug that I am working on. As for the recipe book – I will try to sell it via amazon for convenience.
Tempyra: imperial is pounds and ounces. I use metric personally, but the majority of the readership are American and this will save them converting. I will hopefully be able to publish a metric AND an imperial version of the final thing.
Carrie: no deadline.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:56 pm
does pizza rolls count? no? damn
July 1st, 2008 at 9:03 pm
I have one recipe. Came up with it in High School, for a class. Its pretty simple. Maybe I’ll send it in.:)
July 1st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Once again I have nothing to come up with, but I look forward to reading it
Good luck jfray
July 1st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
You have the chance to change the world JT and you are turning this into a cooking show? Give me a break. The best lists are the ones that really matter. Music. Society. Champions. Allow the diversity of lists be decided by the people not by your whim.
p.s.- Most recipe books have the shelf life of a loaf of bread.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
castashadow: is your comment directed at me? I don’t see how it seems relevant to what JT said. If it is directed at me – my reply is: read some of our cooking lists – read the comments above – people seem to be quite happy for the cookbook idea – that is, except you. So are you suggesting that I ought to allow the diversity to be decided by YOU rather than the other readers or myself? Ironic really.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Im sooo buying this book.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:19 pm
It took long enough for this to get going. Now only if I could remember that meatloaf recipe. My mother would’ve been so jealous…Oh…..Oh, God…… I’m addicted to Penzeys! Damn you and your tasty tasty spice mixes, Damn You!
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:11 am
Man i’d love to send something in but I don’t measure anything I make…I just mix and experiment until it’s the way I like it
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:15 am
castashadow: It’s a website! And not your’s at that. If you want to go and change the world then go do it and don’t take out your anger on someone who just made a site to write some lists. When you make a site you can make all the political and “world changing” lists you want.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:20 am
dang me but I like this idea. My most used cookbook is a compilation book that my school did when I was a kid, many good home style recipes in there. I anticipate this will be similar.
castashadow: try cooking, your opinion will change. plus MacDonalds will do fine without your patronage for a while
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:42 am
jfrater – I hope it has at least one recepie from the caribbean
July 2nd, 2008 at 5:24 am
Best watch out, you’ve got me goin’ now. First a crossword and then a cookbook. Oh when will the excitement end?
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:39 am
Excellent idea!!!
Now I’ve got to go through all my cooking knowledge, and write down a recepie or two. I look foreward to the cookbook. Mr. Frater, of course you’ll be putting it all together, But will you also be contributing or is this strictly a Listverse user list?
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:42 am
oooooooh I need this book!!!
jfrater, will I be able to get this here in Germany? or will you send me a signed copy?
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:15 am
JFrater, you have yet again stolen my heart. When you put up the crossword, I thought it couldn’t get any better and here you go topping even that. I love to cook and read cookbooks! As many of the regular forum members already know, I lost all my cookbooks when my house flooded three weeks ago. I’ve been trying to collect new Listverser recipes through my thread but it seems like Jamie will be doing all the hardwork for me. Now I’ve just gotta start sorting through my brain and figure out amounts for some of my favorite recipes so I can send them in. Cheers!!
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Jfrater- quick question(s). My actual profession is as a chef/kitchen manager and I’d love to contribute. However, one of the things that I like (personally) is the idea of ‘great cooking on a dime’. This had lead me to trying to create my own recipes out of more basic ingredients because, not everyone has access to expensive fresh ingredients, or people who aren’t foodies don’t (sadly) see the need to go out of their way for a top class meal. At any rate, no one eats gourmet meals every night of the week; and nobody addresses how to simply eat well on the other nights. I have a lot of simple recipes and such that I’ve made for myself as a single guy on the premise and I’d be happy to share, but they aren’t what people would think of as fine dining- rather ‘awesome grub’
if that’s not anything you are interested in, let me know, I will stick with submitting my better quality recipes (of my creation) and remain with the standard format. Either way I hope to contribute, I just want to know which you would prefer more of.
Cheers
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:34 pm
MrGraves: As someone who will probably purchase the listverse cookbook, I would love both kinds of recipes. Not that I am a gourmet cook, but I do enjoy seeing recipes for that type of food. I am definitely more of a quick, cheap, and easy type meal maker myself, but my husband likes to do the more extravagant stuff. So to have both types of recipes would be awesome.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:08 pm
castashadow I think the idea of a cook book is great! How wildly diverse the recipes will be. There are LVersers from all over the world. New Zealand, Australia, Iran, India, England, Ireland, Scotland (hold the haggis-don’t need that
), America, Canada, and on and on and on. How wild is that? Very. Such a cool idea.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:03 pm
jfrater: What an excellent idea! I will be rifling through my favorite family recipes for one to submit. You can bet that I will be buying one for sure!
July 3rd, 2008 at 6:28 am
Castashadow – Here’s an idea: Try simply falling into your *own* shadow, instead of just casting it.
JF – I’ll rummage around in that mostly empty space between my ears (don’t say a word you guys, lol), and see if I can come up with something suitable.
July 4th, 2008 at 4:40 am
Send in some recipes for the funny section including “Texas chili con cowboy” from my favourite cookbook “To Serve Man”
See cover: http://menorca.infotelecom.es/~caninternet/cookbook.JPG
July 4th, 2008 at 7:48 am
I would love a signed copy of the cookbook too Jamie!!!
Beasjt: I don’t really understand your comment… did you miss a word?
July 7th, 2008 at 9:53 am
I heard Castashadow is the illegitimate step-grandson of Himmler’s 3rd mistress. Yeah, real fascist that guy.
Love,
Dow
July 31st, 2008 at 2:33 pm
how do i send a recipe?
August 18th, 2008 at 1:42 am
Viz.: Tempyra and reply: the whole of Europe and the old British colonies and a large portion of Asia use metric measurements exclusively. Is this just US isolationism?
August 20th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Douglas: Huh?
January 3rd, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Hi. Good site.
February 20th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Has the book come out yet? Whats the word on it???
February 27th, 2009 at 1:55 am
Jfrater, can I submit too? I can submit recipes fom Malay, Peranakan and Indonesia but you people would never get the ingredients in the recipe. By the way when I mean recipes its not just SUSHI or MOODLES.
July 17th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
My mom made up a recipe for burritoes that i think is great!
The ingredients are…
1-2 pounds of ground beef
3 chopped onions
1 tablespoon of garlic powder
grated cheddar cheese
lettace
8 flour tortillas
Pace brand salsa
What you do is take the ground beef and onions cook them in a skillet along with the garlic powder until the beef is browned. You then load the beef and onions into the tortillas along with the cheddar cheese and lettace(be shure to fold one end so nothing spills out).then procead to toast the folded side so it doesnt fall apart, this step also adds a nice crunch.Once the cooking is done you load the pace salsa in from the open side so you get a mouth full of salsa with every bite.
makes enough to feed four people with two apiece.
Hope you enjoy!
