****
13. Vera Lynn - July 3rd, 2008

segue #111 I had posted the same sentiment at #97, But as usual, you did it much more eloquently. I defer to your greater ability. You are always the best...
****
Vera Lynn, I've made this point before, but I'll do it again because I like you so very much:
You are every bit as bright as I am. The only difference is our ages, and the respective amount of experience of experience and learning. I've seen how much you value intelligence and knowledge, and as I've said before, that in itself, is the touchstone of a brilliant mind.
You're just not finished learning yet. If you can't afford University, and their is a problem with your parents about you going, you can still learn all the things you need at home. It requires *MUCH* more discipline, but I believe you have that to spare.
Vera Lynn, I'm just someone who has done her best with what God has chosen to bless her with (despite the illness I am also cursed with), but, exactly like you, the hunger for knowledge has always been penultimate in my life...ultimate goes to my children, the most important gifts a person can be entrusted with.
If I can be a role model, I'm glad, but don't deify me in any way, please. I'm just a poor bumbling fool with a good mind and a lot of education which I am happy to share, and which is *never, ever* over.
I remember, with the clarity of something that happened yesterday, standing in a bookstore (at age 18), and crying, because it became clear at that moment that I couldn't possibly live long enough to read not just all the books already written, but all the books yet to be written!
It's the kind of thought only an 18 year-old can cry over.

When I first found this List I was astonished.
What was something so obviously full of intelligent people, and with intelligent lists and information, doing on the web?
I just sat back and lingered for awhile, waiting to learn more about it before joining in.
The List didn't just keep up it's intelligent, entertaining format, it actually increased!
The posters, too, seemed to become more steady on their feet (on their keyboard?) as time went by, and by and large the posters continued to surprise me with their intelligence and wit.
When I finally decided to join in, to make myself known, it was a relief. I had found a family.
What's so great about this "family" is that we can have disagreements, spats, and by the next post, or the next List it's over. Because that's what families do. They forgive and forget.
Unless someone is *really* obnoxious, like the alcoholic Uncle who always makes a scene.
The thing is jfrater, Jamie, you have created something greater than the sum of it's parts. Something which, for all of us (for reasons of our own), needed. Something which you created and supplied and offered to the humble masses for free.
From deep in my heart and soul, from the place which only God knows, Thank You.

Jamie - Congratulations on bringing a truly wonderful site into the cyber-world.

I personally have been coming here since somewhere around day one, though I can't remember exactly when. I just know that I'd already been coming here for a few weeks when my girlfriend and I moved in together, and that was at the beginning of August of last year.

So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Oh, and thank you for a good and educational form of entertainment.
