But yes, it's all opinion. Thanks for at least initiating the list. It leads to a good discussion. It's like trying to rank Mozart's 5 best works...out of 626, it's impossible.

The Branagh film version doesn't match the power of Olivier's film, for me. Some of the fencing scenes in the Branagh film seem ludicrous. The finale of the Olivier film is SO MUCH better.
I disagree that Shakespeare's plays are necessarily better watched than read. Who can appreciate the density of his poetry in one sitting? Plus when we read it we are allowing our own imaginations to fill in the details, I find it a better first step than watching a play that may be mediocre on stage(since doing Shakespeare well on stage is so difficult, as Harold Bloom points out).

King Lear is immortal! Far tighter and more intense than Hamlet. A mucher richer cast...Lear, Edmund, Edgar, Gloucester, Kent.
Antony and Cleopatra is amazing...written after the other major tradegies, incredibly grand, ridiculously good.
As You Like It is my favorite comedy.
MacBeth is my all-time favorite. So much tigher than Hamlet.
Hamlet is a fantastically memorable character, but the play itself feels more long-winded to me than Lear, MacBeth, Othello, others.
Richard the 3rd has lackluster characters besides Richard.
Measure for Measure over Shrew.

Good list! I must admit, i do own Branagh's version of Hamlet...and I'm doing my speech in public speaking on reasons why Hamlet has endured as a classic. Any ideas??

Great list, by the way... :)

King Lear should be on the list. Its complexity and the depiction of turmoil within characters and within the decaying kingdom of Lear are very thought provoking. Edmund is usually considered Shakespeare's most evil invention. Goneril and Reagan are not far behind. Love's good intentions but blindness are at the core.

HA! Oh, I am laughing myself hoarse at the idiots denouncing this as a "stupid list", and going on to list what "should" be there. If you hadn't worked it out by now, it's a. Matter. Of. Opinion.

Hee, people. This is why I hate socialising.

Yay for Shakespeare, though.
