I’m not looking through to see if this has been stated or not, but Edgar Allan Poe wasn’t taken in by his aunt and uncle. They were foster parents. Not relatives though. He took the last name Allan after his foster parents. Poe was his biological last name.

Marrying first cousins was more common at one time. Recessive genetic traits generally only increase when inbreeding becomes a common practice within a population.
