Marrying first cousins was more common at one time. Recessive genetic traits generally only increase when inbreeding becomes a common practice within a population. However, it should be noted that Charles Darwin, and H.G Wells were both Malthusian eugenicists. They were also born into a relatively small population of elite families that have traditionally protected their wealth, and power by marrying within their own families, or into other elite families. These elites also have access to various technologies, and information that the general public isn't aware of. This is why they sometimes become futurists, scientists, and/or science fiction writers like Charles Darwin, Aldous Huxley, H.G Wells, and Bertrand Russell. It's not uncommon for these elites to have delusions of being a superior form of human, and to view the rest of humanity as cattle - sometimes literally. The practice of eating human flesh was not unheard of among European royalty. According to a soon to be published book called "Mummies, Cannibals and Vampires," King Charles II, Queen Elizabeth, William III, and Queen Mary all devoured human flesh and drank human blood. H.G. Wells implies that this elite cannibalism is part of natural selection, and the evolutionary process in "The Time Machine." The Morlocks are the elite cannibalistic underground dwellers, and the Eloy are the submissive cattle. This type of megalomaniacal blood lust is possibly a recessive genetic trait resulting from inbreeding among the ruling elite.
