Found this thread while googling for “Aalaag” – could not remember the author or story title, I first read the first installment in *****og magazine – but I did remember the name of the race, so I have to support their memorable-osity. Also about the same time, Stanley Schmidt was writing his Lifeboat Earth series, with a significant role played by the Kyraa, a race fleeing from an ultranova at the galactic core, who paused in their flight to help humans to escape as well. Also, do Saberhagen’s Berserkers count? Or perhaps their Frankenstein protomasters, the Builders? I loved how those stories channelled Asimov and his Three Rules of Robotics, but in the pursuit of exterminating humans rather than serving them. Or maybe that could lead to a different list, of stories with an in-depth portrayal of robots. Please leave out the movies, for the most part, Hollywood just doesnt get sci-fi (I only need cite the I, Robot travesty starring Will Smith).
