Why are there so many blind bluesmen, and why do they all seem to flaunt it in their name? I don’t see Blind Stevie Wonder or Blind Andrea Bocelli performing like that.

Don't forget that being blind often afforded these musicians the 'privilege' of not having to do the backbreaking (and spirit-breaking) work of the agrarian South, thus affording them a measure of 'freedom.' AND by being blind, they sometimes (as in the case of Blind Willie McTell) went to a school for the blind, while other blacks received very little schooling or none at all.

I wrote a paper about this and gave some of these musicians as examples. Raul Midon is a contemporary blind musician with awesome style, he’s not a bluesman though. I essence, check him out too
