I loved the books. I think, you need to consider the era in which these books where written. People wouldn’t like JRRT’s writings for the same reason they wouldn’t like Thomas Hardy’s – slow and highly descriptive. In that sense, many classics can be added to the pool of slow-paced overly descriptive overrated books. As language changes, so does our taste in literature. Some people really like classics, whilst most people don’t (or pretend to like them).

I think movies start becoming overrated when their fame continues to accumulate one decade after another, until it becomes a “have to watch it!” (or the more annoying, “Oh my god! You HAVEN’T watched it?”). Cult movies have that quality. For example, I liked Donnie Darko, but thought it was highly overrated for all the gushing reviews I got from my friends.

I didn’t have a problem with the majority list. I thought Denzel was amazing in Training Day and that Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Steve Buscemi killed it in Reservoir Dogs, but I can see a few flaws in both of those movies. However, don’t even TRY to say Apocalypse Now doesn’t deserve its fame. That is one of the greatest films ever made and set the standard for the Vietnam War movie genre, if you disagree, it proves you don’t have a f*cking clue what you’re talking about.

Titanic, due to it’s gross and suck-quotient, is # 1 imo. Shakespeare in Love and Clerks both sucked tremendously. Scarface hype is partly the fault of critics who denounced the violence and the rap culture that glorifies Montana. “Finally won a Oscar”….Washington won a Oscar for Glory too. I never knew Star Trek IV was that highly rated to begin with outside of Trekkies, kinda doubt that one. Reservoir Dogs is an impressive debut for a first time director, it deserves the hype. Any and every musical is overrated. ” I love the smell of Napalm in the monring” is one of the most famous lines in the history of film and therein lies the hype for this film, plus it is a Coppola-Brando reunion.

I totally agree with Scarface making the cut. It is over exaggerated in almost every way. Drug use is over the top and the violence is unrealistic. And I hate that stupid line everyone loves the film for.. ‘Say hello to my little friend’ It’s not cool.. It’s stupid!

I agree with the others, scarface(which was a cool movie but not really “good”) and Shakespeare in love. However, you are critiquing Reservoir Dogs after seeing Pulp Fiction. If you had seen it when released you would have seen this film as groundbreaking. Training Day was a great movie with excellent acting across the board! I won’t accept criticism on that movie lol. I think Independence Day should be at the top of this list (terrible movie, acting, storyline, horribly overhyped). Leaving Las Vegas( terrible acting by a terrible actor) and Signs should be on here above most of these movies also.
