actually, alaska isnt in the eastern hemisphere because the international date line turns to go around the aleutian islands..its completely in the western hemisphere!

1. Rome is closer to the North pole than New York.
2. South America is not south of North America.

The Marianas Trench is indeed without apostrophe.
It does not refer to Queen Mariana of Austria, but rather to Mariana Islands nearby, known as The Marianas – similar to Canary Islands being The Canaries.

This to Bongo Mongo who insisted on calling it Mariana Trench.
