Transphobic piece of *****. How the hell can you publish this? They weren’t “really women” you *****ing idiot; trans men are just as male as any other guys, because their brains are physically and functionally male and this has been seen in autopsies. They were born with a physical birth defect (a female body) and are correcting it. It’s a hard life – withOUT idiots like you dehumanizing them online.

This is an amazing article..I feel like women and their role in history is often overlooked. I find it so sad that these women had to alter themselves to pursue their dreams. But the most tragic part is that often those who chose this lifestyle for personal reasons were persecuted because of it. Thank you so much for the wonderful article.

…what’s the “overall message” of the article if not “here are female-bodied people who were, for all intents and purposes, men – not just in their heads, but in appearance and social interactions”?

I’m not sure we’re asking for much – just a few changed pronouns and a slightly different title. The message would be the same.

I have to admit, I’m surprised that of all the comments I just read, not one had anything to say about the identity erasure happening here.

As a member of the transgender community, I know from experience that one of the simplest and most respectful ways to validate a trans* person’s identity is to use that person’s preferred pronouns. Some (through, granted, not all) of the individuals on this list, including Brandon Teena and Billy Tipton, were not “really” women – regardless of their biology, they were men. They identified as and lived as men, and it is highly disrespectful to erase their identity as men (albeit trans) by referring to them as being “actually,” “really,” or, “in fact,” women. In fact, I noticed that, at least in Teena’s and Tipton’s blurbs, the author did use a few male pronouns, but then he/she/they/ze switched back to female ones.

At minimum, I think this article would be much more trans*-friendly if 1) the pronouns matched the identity of each individual, meaning that all of the pronouns referring to transmale/transmasculine individuals (Teena, Tipton, etc.) would be “he” instead of “she,” and 2) if the title were altered so as to not erase some of these individuals’ identities as men while still making the point that they were biologically female (maybe “Top 10 Men Who Had Vaginas”?). As is, there’s a lot of identity erasure going on that doesn’t need to be.

These are not men, they are woman. Biologic genitalia does not determine *****. True, men who dress as woman are crossdresser or transvestites. But, biological men who truely want to be a woman and will take the steps to appear so, on the outside, are trans*****ual. These all fall under the umbrella term, transgender, although they are not truely related to one or the other. Using the incorrect terms plays a big part in transgender suicide, which are the people with the highest suicide rates. You don’t get to pick, you just are, learn and respect.
