I apologize for how harsh I was. I can see what a tight spot it might be in that middle ground. When traffic is heavy enough to demand more servers and maintenance but the site hasn't really found a good way to appeal to advertisers. I must have been having a bad day when I wrote it. My warm fuzzies for the site were bound to peter-out eventually, its silly to blame the sites admins. I do hate the pop-ups though. They are the only ones that get through my blocker.

Have you ever considered sponsored lists? For example lists (that are clearly marked "sponsored list" :)) that look something like - Top Ten Gift Ideas for Dad by:Overstock.com, or Top Ten Reasons Vista Rocks by:Microsoft, or whatever.

Kazorek -
its been said using FireFox eliminates pop ups. also think there are other applications that eliminate them as well. i've got an ancient rig that can't cope w/ FF or much else and still i don't get many popups..here or anywhere else. so maybe check out your browser or your system?
but ..also, have to see what J has to add to this.
as for donations
http://listverse.com/donations
you are always more than welcome to donate. its a line on every list at the bottom.
and i think J will agree...this site could not be maintained on donations alone. there must be advertising to support it. unless of course it goes subscribers only ;) which is not likely.
thank for your comments and your concerns.

"There was just something so special about it, it felt like it was a site that respected its visitors." Sorry I didn't proofread, this sentence should start with something like "In the beginning.."

And don't get me wrong its still a great site, but the mood has changed. Its feels colder. Maybe its just my memory exaggerating things, but I feel like I was so in love with the site because it had a heart. A website with heart seemed was so unexpected and refreshing. Now I browse for a while only to find that my task bar is showing three cheap popunder ads when I'm done, and that feeling of the site having a heart is gone.

Maybe you could try donations.

I've been here a long time. I stumbled on Lisverse a year and a half ago(ish) and it felt like it was "my" website. The community was so small and it was just my little undiscovered gem. Humble Listverse. I was pretty disappointed when the site started to blow up and apprehensive about it looking more professional, but I understood it had to happen - it was a great site.

That being said, the popunders are killing me. My classy little website keeps opening a window asking me to take the "dumb test" to find out if I'm stupid, or to enter my cell phone number to win a free vacation. It feels dirty, like I'm on music-stealing site or something. I told myself it was the last straw and I was going to say goodbye to the website; deleted it from my bookmarks and everything. Obviously I couldn't resist returning, but the popunders still break my heart. There was just something so special about it, it felt like it was a site that respected its visitors.

Even though most people aren't naive enough to enter their cell phone numbers (in the popunder) and get taken advantage of, some are. I don't like that the site is willing to do that to any of the people who visit it.

Just a FYI to those who *HATE* popup's and popunder's: change your browser to Firefox and the problem eliminates itself 95 - 100% of the time.
I honestly do not remember the last time I've seen a popup.

I think there may be a bug with the popunder. Not sure; I haven't really looked into it. I just came back from vacay in the UK and had this issue while on the site on my MacBook. I was using Firefox 3, do not have any script blocking, and am not yet running Leopard on the notebook. When going through my usual list of sites for the day I'll open them all at once in separate tabs and then read each site in order. I found that if I didn't stay on the Listverse tab, instead of getting a popunder, the tab redirected to a random other site. It's been a different site each time, but they've all seemed fairly dodgy; they seemed as though I shouldn't mouseover anything and they all asked if I wanted to download their software while viewing the site. (Uh, no....) This has only ever happened in the tab I loaded Listverse in. Not sure if it's a known problem or a fluke or what, but I thought I'd bring it to your attention.

Jamie,

I hate to tell you this, but I got a popunder while viewing this list. Truthfully, I did not find it annoying, and it will not chase me away from my beloved listverse, but I'm just letting you know that they are happening on lists.
