A very interesting and nice list. And I particularly liked the longbowmen as the number 1 on the list (and no, I'm NOT an English guy). But I have to state that, although some people mentioned "bersekrers", some people claim that these guys aren't exactly real. However, the pratice of getting drunk (or maybe sometimes drugged) before a battle was very common, as most "soldiers" weren't really man killing machines and battlefields scared most of the warriors. But this may also lead to the idea that some men were so high, that throwing themselves against the enemy with nothing but pure fury was possibly true.

Interesting. If I'm not mistaken, the photo included of halberders happens to also be of swiss mercenaries--the Swiss Guard at the Vatican. The colorful uniforms were designed by Michalangelo.

Just came over this list and surprised at a couple of what I regard as major omissions. The Swedes are one, they just about squuze into the latter end of the middle ages.

The Scots, massive omission, the Gallowgas have been mentioned in a previous comment and I would suggest all readers to check them up. A Gaelic Norse mix from the Hebridies and Ireland. Scotland has a very bloody history from just about the dawn of time to the present day.

One of the major exports was soldiers and bluntly mercinarys. The reason I feel the should be included is their massive impact in most european wars and furthur affield. The Baltics, central europe, middle east and later the americas and even the far east.

I know this list is about the medieval period which was the golden age of the Scottish warrior but they extend both much furthur back in time and forward to the present day, where the Scottish have a disproportionate representation in the Armed forces.

In the medieval period the Kingdom of man and the Isles covered areas from Ireland through the West of Scotland to Norway. The seat of power tended to move ranging from the most famous Findlaggen in Islay to Mann and also Norway.

Scary thought that at one time the Irish, Gaelic Scots and the Norwegians were under the one and the same command.

Apart from fighting on land they were fantasticaly skillful maritime fighters using originaly longships then birlins.

The odd thing is few people seem to know about them.

Another crew who should be considered are the Romanians, although this may be covered by the boyars.

Awesome list, but would have liked to hear about more culture specific regiments such as the Knights Templar, Jannisarries and Swiss Mercenaries rather than weapons like Crossbows and Longbows. Very interesting though.
