Just came over this list and surprised at a couple of what I regard as major omissions. The Swedes are one, they just about squuze into the latter end of the middle ages.

The Scots, massive omission, the Gallowgas have been mentioned in a previous comment and I would suggest all readers to check them up. A Gaelic Norse mix from the Hebridies and Ireland. Scotland has a very bloody history from just about the dawn of time to the present day.

One of the major exports was soldiers and bluntly mercinarys. The reason I feel the should be included is their massive impact in most european wars and furthur affield. The Baltics, central europe, middle east and later the americas and even the far east.

I know this list is about the medieval period which was the golden age of the Scottish warrior but they extend both much furthur back in time and forward to the present day, where the Scottish have a disproportionate representation in the Armed forces.

In the medieval period the Kingdom of man and the Isles covered areas from Ireland through the West of Scotland to Norway. The seat of power tended to move ranging from the most famous Findlaggen in Islay to Mann and also Norway.

Scary thought that at one time the Irish, Gaelic Scots and the Norwegians were under the one and the same command.

Apart from fighting on land they were fantasticaly skillful maritime fighters using originaly longships then birlins.

The odd thing is few people seem to know about them.

Another crew who should be considered are the Romanians, although this may be covered by the boyars.

Awesome list, but would have liked to hear about more culture specific regiments such as the Knights Templar, Jannisarries and Swiss Mercenaries rather than weapons like Crossbows and Longbows. Very interesting though.

In reading all of the posts I could not help but notice all of the typos, if that is what they were. It's very intersting how many of you are so well informed and ovbiously well educated. Reading about all the numerous medieval soldiers was interesting, including the responses and queries from other readers. No, I am not a college grad or educator, just a self educated person with a variety of interests, always ready to learn more. Very well done all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign

It was the first two fingers, and not just the index or middle finger...

@39 CRSN:
It was the battle of Agincourt that the French were supposed to soundly trounce the English. The French figured that their force, which outnumbered the English, would prevail, especially since the French had more nobles in their numbers. I had read that the French had said that they would cut off the first two fingers on the right hand of the longbowmen so that they would never again draw a bow, and that this was why raising those two fingers in a "V" (like a "V" for victory, or a peace sign) was considered an insult in Europe.

The wiki link for the battle is here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Agincourt

I did not read the whole thing, and I don't know if the bit about the finger(s) is in there or not. I got that bit from "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader", I don't remember which edition.

@ (57) Ikky - Saladin was an Egyptian Medieval commander of great fame and fortune, but I'm afraid there isn't such a thing as 'saladin's army', which could be placed in this list ;-) By the way, Hannibal wasn't Medieval at all, he was around in Roman times!

@ (58) Ohrmets - I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Some units may also occur in AoE-2, but I didn't took this list from that game! The last time I played that game is probably 5 years ago :P

@ (59) & (60) - Yeah the Chu Ko Nu and the Mangudai were also formidable soldiers, but I focused more on Medieval Europ & the Middle East in this list ;) Maybe I will include them in the second version of this list!
