Most of these are games of luck. True they have lots of strategy but they rely on luck too much to be considered strategy games. Also why isn’t the Total War series #1??!!!

Let me explain why go and poker are more complicated than chess ok here is my definition of more complicated : the more complicated or complex game is the game that is the hardest to play perfectly or near perfectly.
Computer already play near perfect chess and if you take a world champion like Kasparov and you ask him to play a correspondence game using a computer it might be possible that he can play perfect chess it is not the case at all in go computer are near useless to Go expert Masters and let alone world champion while in poker if you play deep stack it’s almost impossible to play perfect poker. Computer artificial intelligence in both poker and Go are very primitive which attest to the complexity of both of those games compare to chess there is also Shogi the Japenese chess that is more complex than chess it will probably take another 10 years before a shogi program can beat world Shogi champion according to different sources but still Go is more complex also go is expandable you could play on much larger board and computer would be back to square 1 because the game would become infinitely more complicated to compute both not so hard to adapt for Go champions it would be a very similar game. much more than if you change chess rules and use larger board with new pieces.

I play the top 3 game Go is more complicated than chess it’s a fact… while poker is difficult to compare to chess and go it is certainly very complicated while on the on the surface it could feel very simple.

I like that on a list of “top 20 strategy games of all time” roughly half of your list are not strategy games at all. Just because a game has a certain element of strategy to one portion of it, does not make it a “strategy game”, just as gaining experience points in a call of duty title or similar game does not make it a “role playing game”.

This list is made of suck and fail. I am deducting three internets.

I agree that chess is a among the greatest strategy games, but consider this… A computer can beat the best chess masters, but a computer cannot yet beat the best go masters.

I understand peoples first inclinations will be to support chess, because chess is familiar to the western world (I’m from America too), but when you consider both the complexity and depth, as well as life lessons, in “go”, there is a clear victor. Research go, it’ll be worth the read.

As for why poker is #1, I think it is more-or-less shock value, and the large amout of human variables. And the fact that you can overcome the luck and control the luck with skill (as compared to by the rules of the game with chess and go).

Poker as the number one strategy game? Over Chess and Go? Seriously? Not a bad list, but come on. Also, no Mancala? Should be top five easily. Disappointing.

I’m not sure I would call Monopoly or Settlers strategy games.
More like games of luck with an element of frustration thrown in..

I agree with nur that Poker is only interesting if there’s money involved.
