It gets even more interesting when you consider how those early photographs were made and developed. The glass plates had to be exposed and developed while they were still wet. Some of the chemicals used were toxic – including cyanide.
And figure the experiences of the photographers. The Antietam, Petersburg and Gettysburg battlefield photos were taken just days after the fighting. In the case of Petersburg and Vicksburg, some were taken *during* the fighting.
The American Civil War was (I believe) the first war to be documented in photographs.

It might have helped if I had bothered to mention that I was referring to photograph #11 showing Lincoln visiting General George McClellan’s staff in regards to the previous post about George Custer being in the photo. Duh!

Here’s some more trivia: The guy standing off by him self in front of the tent flap is that historic bone-head, George Armstrong Custer. Non-Americans may be interested to know that Custer and most of the cavalry unit under his command were wiped out by Sioux and Cheyenne warriors of Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and Gall a few years after this photo was taken (1876). For a short time, Custer was on General McClellan’s (another bone-head) staff in the early days of the Civil War.

The best one IMO is not even mentioned. It’s a picture of Lincoln delivering his 2nd Inaugural Adress. In the upper right hand corner, standing in the gallery, you can see John Wilkes Booth watching Lincoln deliver his speech.

Those very interesting, taking the fact that we don’t study a lot of history here in Australia, most of our history is how the white people came, and killed the native aborigines for sport and almost eradicated them, oh that and world war 1.
