Hello everybody!

I got a question: In the "Civil War" it was mentioned that photographs taken during the war on glass-negatives were shortly after the war used for constructing glasshouses. Can anybody tell me more about that?

Thanks for your help!

It's hard to imagine an American city all bombed out like those in 19, 10 and 07. We see pictures of so many other places that look like that but, it's hard to think that soem of our own nation once looked like that. It's hard to believe that those were all taken roughly 145 years ago.

Rob S.;

re: "Photo #17, “The bottom rail is on top, as these soldiers were among the 180,000 black men who served in the Union army during the war—and helped deliver ultimate victory.”

What do you mean by “The bottom rail is on top”? Something in the photograph itself, or are you speaking metaphorically?"

**

It is indeed metaphorical and from the period. It refered to the black union soldiers (many runaway former slaves) returning to the south with gun in hand and representing law and order while the former slave-owners were the 'outlaws'. The bottom was on top and the top was on bottom similar to Matthew 20:16.

Sadly, it was southern indignation to this 'world turned upside down' which lead to groups such as the KKK to 'restore things to the way they should be' and to Jim Crow laws being passed in the 1870s and on...

No good deed goes unpunished.

Point of conjecture in the #1 photo:

Maryland was only "enemy territory" because Lincoln had key separatists in Maryland arrested and held without trial for 3+ years, IIRC.
