Maybe his comment is childish (or just to your own opinion), but this is a fundamental truth (in other words, he IS thinking). The reason behind all the nasty things going on for baby girls because of the stupid family "honor" and for the sake of "preserving the bloodline (actually family name)" (quotations because I think these are filled with stupidity, since only males are allowed to inherit any type of familial matters, and females will become "outsiders" once they "marry-out" to another family, losing maiden name in the process, therefore making them a member of the family they married to). The more "traditional" Chinese people only care about "continuing the candle light" (= preserving family name), and having at least one heir is absolutely necessary. Of course that means whoever who has something hanging between their legs, literally. And sadly, those people will have their joy of having a newborn (which is the wish of having a baby BOY) sharply turned to extremely disappointment/anger just right after the discovery of the absence of "something important". And the mother is always the one to blame (because her "belly" isn't "behaving"). Which is also sad, because now we all know it is the man's sperm determining the sex of the baby unless it is a rare hormone problem.

Abortions are actually mild practice (to my opinion comparing to the others), at least the fetus won't feel too much at the emotional level (doesn't mean it's right at any level). In less than 20 years ago here was a girl (2nd child of a family in rural area, and the first child was also a girl) who was a victim of having sewing needles penetrated into her body when she was around one year old. And it was her GRANDMOTHER, who was also a FEMALE, behind this (sadly the girl's father also aggravated the incident and torn the family apart). All the things described above are all presented at this case (yes, it did turned to a criminal lawsuit). With two needles stuck at her brain and three needles stuck at her body (also very close to her vital organs/critical blood vessels) made her suffering pain for over 10 years. The grandmother even thought she was doing the right thing when she confessed to the police, just because that child was not a boy. Luckily the girl had surgery performed (thanks to the generous public donating money) to take all the needles out.

And do you know the saddest truth behind all these? Instead of the males, it is in fact the females who follow these practices ritually. The education they received all over the years have brainwashed them beyond having their own mind, and they never question the validity nor the worthiness of the traditions, and continue practicing them to the younger generations.

Fortunately females won't extinct in China because there are always the more educated population not minding the sex of their children (but I am laughing at those rural dudes who will soon unable to find a bride, they simply don't deserve any sympathy), and people outside China who are willing to adopt these girls (they gained my respect), treating them like their own and let them live happily without the pressure of being a female at the wrong place.

All religions suck. If humans would stop worshipping make-believe men in the sky and start taking care of each other and all life on our "Holy Mother Earth" it would be a better planet. Fuck religion.

One more thing, on the topic of male circumcision...

While female circumcision/FGM is a horrible practice, male circumcision is a totally different animal. As I understand it, FGM greatly reduces or completely removes a woman's ability to enjoy sex via the removal of part of the clitoris (as well as sewing the vaginal opening almost completely up).

This differs greatly from male circumcision where only part of the foreskin is removed. This has no negative effect on sexual pleasure or carry the risk of long term health hazards. In fact, the absence of foreskin greatly reduces the buildup of smegma on the penis.

As I understand it, this practice is not widespread in the western world. That being said, I hope that some posters here at least do a little research on the topic before lumping it together with FGM.

Thanks.

I've been lurking on this site for a while, but this is the first time I've been compelled to post something, so please be gentle :-)

I tend to agree with fact that the violence and injustice that occurs in Islamic countries stem from cultural sources, not religious ones. Islam, at its best, is a positive force. Just as Christianity, at its best, is one as well (I was born Roman Catholic, by the way). The problem lies in politics/culture harnessing religion to reinforce their respective ideologies.

This is a terrible thing because, by their nature, religions tend to elicit extremely strong emotions in many of their followers (as some of the above posts will attest). This makes an objective and rational discussion impossible. The tragedy of this is that an objective, rational viewpoint is utterly necessary in a modern society.

Also, religion requires one to accept certain things at face value (such as the virgin birth and resurrection, in my case). While the idea of blind faith is somewhat distasteful for me, it is harmless if kept in the realm of PERSONAL spiritual development. It is when this same blind faith is transferred to the the sociopolitical realm that the potential for great evil occurs.
