One thing to remember if you ever get fired, apply for unemployment even if you don't think you'll get approved! You'll most likely be denied unless for some reason your previous company doesn't mind paying. But pretty much everyone that goes through the process of appealing will be approved after the hearing. The judges tend to be very lax in these situations. Just make sure that you continue to claim for the weeks that you're initially denied. You'll get a huge check if you eventually get approved!

I must say that's a bit too COOL a suggestion for my liking. However, its all a matter of opinions. In fact, I can see the essence of the poster's suggestions. But the truth is that all that is easier to read and appreciate as long as you are employed. A whole different ball game once the job's gone !!

You really *don't* get it, do you?
Places like McD's would not consider hiring someone like her, someone that overqualified, because they know they are hiring someone who'll quit in a second as soon as a job in their field opens up.
Most employers won't hire overqualified applicants for that very reason. Many employers used to use, as an excuse not to hire females, that they'd quit as soon as they got pregnant.
You have to get your head around the fact that employers are not dummies, they are not going to hire an overly qualified candidate who will be bored, and who will be continuing to look for more appropriate employment. It does no one any good.

91. pliskin: I know you're joking, but in this economy the only answer to what to do when you become unemployed is to work your butt off every day trying to find a new job!
One of my kids, with 2 B.A.'s and a M.A. is currently out of a job. She has been jobless now for three months. She is over qualified for many available jobs, thus won't even be interviewed! For the few jobs she is properly qualified for, she is up against 20 or so equally qualified applicants.
She's beginning to consider going back to Uni for a PhD.
Meanwhile, she has job finders in 3 cities looking for suitable jobs for her, plus she is wearing down her own shoe leather on the search for a good job.
There's no time for going to the park and playing and drinking beer. That makes you a loser, a flipper of hamburger patties at McDonalds for the rest of your life.

My husband just got laid off and your list is super.

He's old enough to go ahead and retire, but you would have thought his boss might have had a heart and just let him retire on his birthday 2 months from now. To say the least the man is no gentleman, he's an AH crunching numbers and to hell with cake, ice cream and the usual watch they give you.

We plan on paying off our credit cards and then start saving like crazy while I still get two checks. I'm disabled and get SS and a check from my job. That will run out when I'm 65 so we have a few years to maybe save some.

Anybody that says it isn't a tough life hasn't really lived, Paris.
