Here is what Alcoholism did to me (I went "Cold Turkey" 5 years and 155 days ago on November 20, 2006) It was on that day when I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2 and have to be checked every 3 months (Thank God for Military benefits or I would be dead right now) by my VA personal care physician. I also have the following conditions : Insomnia, Anxiety, Edema, Acid Reflux, Depression, High Blood Pressure, Sleep Apnea, Neuropathy, and a Potassium deficiency. On May 8th of 2011, I was rushed to the hospital (I live in the Phoenix Area) with a 104.1 fever and could not stand for fear of faintiing as that is how I felt. I was wheeled into an ER room and the doctor asked me questions. I told him that I am Diabetic Type 2. The first thing he did was take off my shoes and socks. He looked at the Big Toe of my Right Foot and it was the color of a tomato and was absolutely numb to the touch. I was then taken to the X-ray room and had an MRI done on it. The very next day, a neurosurgeon came into my room and made no melodramatics about it. He said that your Big Toe on My Right Foot will be AMPUTATED this evening. And You know what ? I was neither stunned nor surprised by that as I knew that something was going to happen like that. Today, I am fine and watch my diet. I can walk fine, but I literally cannot RUN. Seems ironic that I was an All- American honorable mention in Track and Field when I graduated from high school (1980) and now I have attempted to run 3 times and have gone 25 feet and fallen down each time. AA meetings ? Lets just say that it is a task for me to go grocery shopping when I see the displays of beer and the shelves of Booze and Wine. Simply put, I am afraid just to look at it, so therefore, AA is out (plus I am an agnostic bordering on Atheism and I know that AA is religiously based). One last thing, I never got into recreational drugs ever. Why ? Alcohol is also classified as a DRUG but the difference is its LEGAL to purchase.

This is a very accurate ovotrbaeisn in my experience.I am an alcoholic who, although swore it would never happen to me, found himself a practicing alcoholic by my mid-30s. The alcoholism I despised in my father somehow got programmed into me and I took to it like a fish to water.I also found out later in life that other family members were alcoholic. My grandfather in fact was an alcoholic who quit for reasons of health. Yet I suppose he had all of the behaviours and thought patterns of an alcoholic and somehow I picked up on those too without knowing it.I cant tell you how many people I meet in recovery who could tell you a similar story about alcoholism in their families.Hopefully, my recovery will initiate a new set of inheritable traits for future generations. I have observed a lot of this in my program of recovery too. Where a parent sobers up, and although their kids follow the same path of alcoholism, they too learn how to sober up and recover.Ciao.
The problem with alot of these lists is they tend to be from an american, isolationist viewpoint. I mean the british film Withnail and I, with it's brilliant, drunken soliloquy taken from Hamlet and whatnot, is probably one of the best filma of the eighties/ninties, and yet it's still only considered a cult film. If you're going to have a film centering around a reliance on alchohol, you muct hae withnail and I.

Has anyone seen the movie with Jane Fonda (I think), called " The Morning After"? Wow! Alcoholic woman wakes up to a stabbed stranger in a strange apartment. She subject to blackouts, can't remember if she committed the crime or not, so begins to cover it up! Very suspenseful! I think Jeff Bridges is in it also. A Must Watch, Truly!

@ Ward. Here is my simple explanation regarding alcoholism. About 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with anxiety, which to me is something I would never wish upon even my worst enemy. In November of 2006, I had yet another attack and my routine was clean out for a couple of days, take anti-anxiety medication, get discharged from the hospital and go write back to the bottle. But this time, I was in the hospital for 8 days (usually, it would be overnight or a 48 hour stay). When I was discharged, I was told by the doctor tha I had developed Diabetes Type 2. The date was Nov.20, 2006. I have not touched a drop since and feel much better. My point is that I don't care how many times you break the law under the influence and get hauled into the police station, once your released or your bail has been paid, you're going to go right back to drinking. But when a doctor says that it won't be long until you die from drinking. You're ears perk up !! I have various medical and chronic conditions that I will have until I die and I take 11 different medications for them. Once you get Diabetes, other chronic conditions pop up out of everywhere. I don't need AA because I'm too scared to even look at it which makes me feel uneasy when I go to a restaurant, and also the fact that I am an atheist. I say to others about the danger of drinking, its just up to them to stop it
