Looks like the themes of freedom from religion (note I don't use the term anti-religion) in Contact are the main reason for its being berated heavily in this list. Anyone who had read the book (and also remained mindful of when it was written) would be aware of the more subtle elements of that aspect of the story.

Arroway's personal struggle with God turned out in the end to be a matter of semantics, as the conclusion of the book (which the author evidently never read) - comes to all but conclude the universe was designed by another being or beings - all but God in another name!

This was partly one of many reminders throughout the book of the scale of the universe and our small part in it - and how everyone has very different ways of attempting to make sense of it all, all of them probably far shy of the great magnitude of the truth.

I long for the day when a main character in a movie or book can be non religious - and the film still not slated "anti religion" with a kneejerk slap of the hand.

OP - buy the book - and read it - or don't make reference to it in an attempt to give your one dimensional, emotive slating more weight.

See, this is where we differ on CONTACT. I actually thought the final fifteen minutes actually ruined the rest of the movie. Not like the rest of the film was uber-amazing. There were stupid points here and there, for sure. But I could overlook those points for the most part. The ending just took the rest of the movie and shat all over it. The outspoken, brash and confident Foster is all of a sudden mouselike during the hearings. She can't take fifteen seconds to explain that it's easy for them to figure out that the radio signals couldn't have come from Earth? Or how about them not even trying it again? Here's ALIEN TECHNOLOGY you could use to CONTACT ALIENS and no one is bothering to try again? No rich people want to have a go at it? It just left a bad taste in my mouth.

*Sigh*

Okay.

Here we go.

The Truman Show is science fiction because it centers on the sociological and psychological effects of a man taking part in a reality show inside humongous television studio the size of a city where the producers of the show can see him at all times and control the weather.

Edward Scissorhands is science fiction because it involves a scientist dying before he can finish his android.

The Sixth Sense and Princess Mononoke are not science fiction. The former is horror, and the other is fantasy. I haven't seen Pi or Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, so I don't know about those. Still, I have my doubts about Pi, but Batman does tend to have science fiction elements.

And finally.

The point of Contact is not simply to "ignorantly rant against religion," but to delve into the concept of faith and show why it's not a good idea to rely on it as a principle, especially in the field of science where facts and evidence are of utmost necessity to find out whether a claim is true or not. However, religion was thrown in the mix because, in general, religion revolves around the concept of faith. That, however, does not mean you can't believe whatever you want to. It's just something for people to consider, to make people think and possibly search within themselves.

Carl Sagan's "Contact" is not a "ridiculous and ignorant rant against religion." Religion is what is ridiculous and ignorant. If you really believe there is a fairy godfather in the sky waiting for you to die so he can hug you, you're fucking absolutely insane and should seek serious medical attention.
