Everyone loves cartoons – both children and adults. There is always a temptation by a cartoonist to slip in a bit of something extra – something only they are aware of, but thanks to scores of teenaged boys with a pause button and too much time on their hands, we are all able to see these little in-jokes. Unfortunately for companies like Disney, some of them are a little on the naughty side and they have been the root of legal battles. Here is a list of 10 naughty moments found in cartoons.
During the sequence in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame in which Quasimodo sings ‘Out There’ (one of the best songs on the soundtrack), as we pan over a view of Paris from the bell tower, characters from other Disney movies can be seen in the background. Most prominently is Belle (Beauty & The Beast) strolling along in her blue dress and reading a book of course. More sharp eyed viewers may also spot Pumbaa from The Lion King being carried by two men, a street merchant shaking out the flying carpet from Aladdin and even a satellite dish on one of the rooftops. In the clip above you need to watch from around 02:45.
When you go through the movie pocahontas and look at each scene carefully, you find it is of references to sex. In the video clip above the job has been done for you – some are pretty obscure, but others are very very clear enough to be fairly convincing evidence of intentional inclusion in the movie.
This is a more popular one. The rumour was that a disgruntled artist who was going to lose his job drew the phallic object in the castle of The Little Mermaid in annoyance over his impending redundancy. However the artist himself says that he was not about to be fired, but was forced to hurry drawing the design so that he could meet his deadline and did not realise at the time the exact shape of what he had drawn. Well he didn’t until he was contacted by a disgusted member of his youth church group who had heard about the controversy. Obviously, later version of the video had the infamous spire removed.
In keeping with The Little Mermaid theme, another popular accusation for the Disney producers came when someone noticed the rather odd shape protuding from the minister’s pelvic region during the scene in which a Ursula (disguised as ‘Vanessa’) attempts to marry Eric using Ariel’s voice. However later shots in the film show that the minister had rather bandy legs that blended in with his tunic and the ‘erection’ was actually his knees.
Another popular one. Long has been the debate over the dust cloud in The Lion King. In the scene just before Simba meets Rafiki, he tiredly flops down on the edge of a cliff, a cloud of dust rises which allegedly for a few frames spell the word S-E-X. The debate is that the special effects team put it in intending it to read S-F-X to leave their little mark on the film. I say judge for yourself but it looks like ‘sex’ to me (as in indicated in red in the picture above).
Disney characters and Warner Brothers characters interacted for the first time in the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and cartoon fans cheered. However during and evening at The Ink & Paint Club, Donald Duck and Daffy Duck duet on the piano together and the relationship turns nasty when Donald allegedly calls Daffy a “nigger”. Anybody who has seen a Donald Duck cartoon should know that it can sometimes be quite difficult to understand what Donald says but thinking you hear him scowling “God damn stupid nigger” takes the cake. Closed captioning in the film says that the line is “Goddurn stubborn nitwit”, other claim it is “You doggone little…” But this is not the first time Donald has been busted for his language. In 1995, Wal Mart pulled a Disney video of Mickey Mouse cartoons from it’s shelf after complaints that Donald shouted “Fuck you!” in the episode called “Clock Cleaners”.
The scene in Aladdin on Jasmine’s balcony in which the hero is trying to brush off the growling tiger Rajah, he can apparently be heard whispering “Good teenagers take off your clothes”. The script says that the line is “Good kitty, take off and go”. The clip sounds like somebody else other than the Aladdin voice has whispered the line in but no matter which line is actually spoken, this allegation got Disney in hot water with the American Life League who used it to try and get Disney films banned, claiming they had been sneaking sexual messages to children over the years.
A cartoon heart-throb, Who Framed Roger Rabbit’s Jessica Rabbit has over the years helped to turn a lot of young boys into men. So wishes came true when the claim that cheeky animators sneaked in a few frames of her without underwear during the scene in which Jessica and Bob Hoskins in a taxi that runs into a lamp-post. As she is thrown from the car, Jessica lands, causing her red dress to hitch up revealing her apparently unclothed nether regions. In some cases it has been tradition for animators to slip racy shots in films for a split second but it seems that their fun can be spoilt by young men pausing the scene in movie where Jessica Rabbit spreads her legs. Now why they would do that, I have no idea…
In 1999, Disney studios announced that they would be recalling the home video version of the 1977 movie The Rescuers because a few shots contained an “objectional background image”. During the scene in which the mousy heroes Bernard and Bianca fly through the city in a sardine tin (about 38 minutes into the movie) a photographic image of a topless woman can be seen in the windows they pass. While some of the items on this list are objectionable and some have been proven wrong, this one is pretty clear and Disney studios had to hang their heads in shame. It was confirmed by a Disney spokesperson who simply said that the tampering “was done more than twenty years ago” and the company recalled 3.4 million copies of the video that had been sold.
In the movie Beauty and the Beast we see many references to sex (as in some of the previous items), but we also see some satanic references. Pay special attention to the clip above from about the 02:55 mark to see some very blatant symbols of evil such as a skull and the sign of the horns. The latter part of the clip deals with morality and I think the narrator may be stretching things a little, but it is an interesting clip nevertheless.

Spending this amount of time trying to point out this “hypocrisy” is an exponent of the same cultural sickness that makes it worthwhile for Disney animators to slip in raunchy stuff.
If Disney were allowed to make more realistic stories, without ruthless censorship from US prudes, there would be no problem. There might be quite a bit more bad behaviour in the movies, but that’s life for you. If it serves in telling a tale, or it portrays the world as the movie maker wants to show it, why not?
“Think of the children” is what is rotting your country and this painful *****ysis is nothing but an extreme exponent of it…
My mom wouldn’t let us watch Disney movies when we were kids because of stuff like this. Mine will be watching anyway, and if they notice, then obviously they’re more observant than I was as a kid because I never saw any of it.

You know…most of these are like staring at your carpet too long, thinking you see a face and actually believing it has deep actual meaning. While some of the things on the list are legit, most of these (namely the videos with the magical technicolor overlays spelling ***** in every conceivable way) seem to be the product of someone with WAY too much time on his hands.
And the attempt to study the morality of Beauty and the Beast was…fairly shallowly thought out. It’s a kids movie with shallow lessons of morality with a random internet person trying to look smart by picking it apart with glib insights.

I think that guy that made those “*****” videos is full of crap. He’s obviously digging waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too deep into nothing. It’s like a lot of those backwards masking “warnings” that church groups tried to throw around a few decades back. And what’s this about “Satanic gestures” in Beauty and the Beast? Those “Satanic Gestures” that he was pointing out also happen to be “I Love You” in sign language, and in him also saying the movie promotes “benefits of looking beautiful”? I’d call BS on that too. Especially in the first case of the ugly lady turning attractive. They were simply trying to prove a point that by dismissing something that was ugly at first glance, he happened to lose out on something that was otherwise good. How else would they show that?

Most of these are not real. About the “*****” thing appearing hidden, well.. it’s easy to see what you want to see and hear what you are told to. Pervy imagination (and too much free time) is all you need to splash these things around everywhere. And the minister hard-on was his knee.
And the whole point of Beauty and the Beast was to “bring out the good in somnething hideous”. Almost as retarded as one genious (yes, that is sarcatic) who claimed that Disney’s Mulan was male-chauvinistic by teaching that women are inferior to men. In the movie Mulan, the female protagonist, proves this wrong by mastering the army arts and saving all of China.
The rescuers thing was sadly real all though I find it almost amusing that it got trough in the first place.
I’m nt a big fan of Disney’s production but they got some good clips in there – mostly the old ones. First list I read that truly disappointed me.

I can’t believe that the scene with Hercules giving head to a candle wasn’t mentioned. Hercules runs trips over some stuff and lands on his hands and knees with a canle stuck in his mouth. Pretty obvious to me anyhow. I don’t own the movie and so have no way of posting it on YouTube. Maybe someone else can though.

Criddlers… This is true, even normal speech, when recorded and played backward often reveals unintentional subconscious (not necessarily intentionally subliminal) statements. So anomalies like this can be found all over, And these could easily just be found by nit-picking.
However, I think the fact remains that while it COULD be a stretch and purposely found and pointed out, it’s probably not the case when combined with the fact that there are also so many OBVIOUS visuals. So if they are showing boobs, murders, panties, lack of panties, etc… why defend the more obscure POSSIBLE ones? Does it spell out ‘*****?’ MAYBE not, but since there are bouncing boobs in the previous scene, it PROBABLY does.
Maybe that really WAS the priest’s knee. But is that the first thing ANYONE would think, when noticing it? No. So the thing is that, whether intentional or not… they should have a person who’s job it is to look carefully over these prior to release, like an editor.
And the remark that hentai or manga have *****ual references, so americans are prudes? America is the LEAST prudent country when it comes to adult themes. But that’s the difference. Hentai is intended for adults. Or at least teens. Disney movies target audience is very young impressionable CHILDREN. And the plight here is that the result of these visuals might very well be WHY we are the least prudent country.
It’s not being prudent to not want your 6 year old daughter to see a penis, or your 8 year old son beating off to animated red heads. I’m just sayin. I don’t even have kids, and I can see the issue in it. I mean sure, from a grown up perspective, these things aren’t anything to give a second thought to. But whoever made that statement isn’t keeping in mind who the target audience is. Saying ‘who cares?’ is like saying you’d be ok with someone showing your child a picture of a penis. Obviously that’s ridiculous.
And one last thing, The statements about subliminal messages being forgotten right away, and that you have to be observant, or that they are hidden and have no effect? These are completely BUNK. Subliminal messaging is effective, because while you may cognitively “forget” it, your subconscious does NOT. You may not think about it, but that is irrelative. Your subconscious mind stores data continuously and refers to it throughout your daily life forever. Thus why you can remember something that happened years later, when reminded of it even if you hadn’t thought about that day any other time. And the smallest things can effect people in the smallest of ways. I had a teacher once that would always revert to standing with her fists on her waist and her feet apart. I noticed it, because it was strikingly familiar and wondered why she always did it. Then one day it hit me, and I asked her… if she liked peter pan. Not so surprisingly, her response was “Oh, that used to be my favorite movie, how did you know?!” Then she realized it after I imitated her posture.
Sure THAT doesn’t hurt anyone, but the fact is that everything that we are subjected to impacts us, and so there should be some kind of filter of what it is that we are subjected to. When that same concept it applied to obscurely *****ual or moral ideas that can be found in some of the films, you get the idea. Unfortunately there ARE people who act a certain way because of small things like this. BUT, Disney isn’t the only place it can be found, and isn’t responsible for EVERY slut, or pervert. If you are worried about it, then just don’t give them Disney movies until they’re a bit older, that’s all. And if you really don’t care about censoring your children, well then there will always be that 30 year old guy that you’ll have to deal with dating your 18 year old daughter who really only wants his money. Nice work. Not.

In defense of Beauty and the Beast (I’m not saying there IS subliminal messages though) in the video shown he discusses how they sing many times about looks and Beauty. But the point of why they sing the songs is to show the personality of Gestan. To show his vain and cruel character and compare him to the original moral references in the opening scenes of the movie. You can notice that Beast and Belle talk and sing much, much less about it. And in instances when they do-Beast talking of how he feels unright for Belle because she is beautiful and when he goes through the scene of getting a makeover to look better for her-it’s showing how the insecurities of feeling the need to look better for someone can affect you.
Okay, the stuff with Belle, Carpet, and pumba in The hunchback of notre dame is okay. I never noticed that before.
But the crap with Beauty and the Beast and Pochahontas is a bunch of bs. This guy obviously already has a negative opinion of Disney and is willing to do anything to disprove Disney’s messages. If he’s so opposed to the stereotypes of beauty in the beauty and the beast, he might as well be opposed to life in general because that’s what society has always preached. And to be honest, I truly don’t nearly all the things he “points out.” There’s nothing there! He’s trying to point out images that aren’t really there to prove a stupid point.

Sorry but I don’t buy it. Like deeziner (10)said the viewer is the one who sees that he want to see. Sometimes it happen to look like something else without being the purpose, in millions of frames made by the creators of cartoons is almost impossible to void that. A lot of people see faces, bodies, crosses and other objects in clouds form, in wood, bread, etc. That’s not a prove that someone did that to some mystic or tricky purpose, hahaha.
The mental specialist or some exams (about imagination, visual points, psychologic) show to their subjects some papers with random colored spots. Here’s the funny thing, some of them will say there are houses, butterflies, cars… And surprising is that almost all are correct.
With a little effort and interest we can find crosses there but that will not prove a subliminal message from Disney, just will rest my case.

one thing that is so obvious is that each and every Disney movie. I saw these movies when i was a kid.
one needs to relaize that most of the movies of Disney was based on the times when our ancestors lived..

1) The Hunchback Of Notre Dame ..(Hunch Backs were really hated prior to the 20th century)Message of the movie: “Accept the handicapped they are the part and parcel of our family and society.
2)Pocahontas: (In the time when England colonized Brits were racist)Message of the movie: Lets all not ignore that ignore the fact that John Smith made friends with an Indian tribal princess.
3)The Little Mermaid… your eyes choose to see The Phallic Palace. Message of the movie: ok what about the facts that mermaid and the princes are worlds apart and they fall in love understanding and compromising with each other culture.??????? I see the message cross culture marriages are accepted. Open your ears to an obvious message.
4)The Lion King. You can see an uncertain image of ***** in the air. What about the obvious message from Simba to the kids take responsibility for your family and your actions.
5)Racist Donald Duck. Oh so Donald Duck is a racist? well come to Middle east yo will know what is the definition of a racist…
6) Aladdin. You hear those words that are disgusting? What about the clear message that a street person can marry a princess.. well do you really see that in your real life??? I did not… so the message to the kids is what? I think i made my point…

9) Beauty and the Beast ..on the references to the beauty.. when any baby is born .. what to we tell him / her oh my cute, adorable baby.. is it not obvious beauty is taken a toll in our modern world as it did not the past.. the one with the beauty is normally preferred.. ugly truth of life… open the pages of current news and the history and even Bible… and see what i mean. The obvious message Beauty still loved beast.. why? for that you will perhaps study SOCIOBIOLOGY..

in superman the movie (chris reeves) after clark is introduced to lois when he is sliding around to his desk, you can see his hand move at super speed and get a crotch feel on lois. She jerks upright and looks around puzzled. I think it was intentional and not by the special effects guys. but unless your visual acuity is very high you will only see it when you slow the dvd down as it goes through the scene

@REALITY CHECK: Thank you! I was thinking the same thing through all of these. Especially beauty and the beast. The whole point of Gaston wanting to marry Belle because of her beauty was to show that there’s more to love than looks. This guy has way to much time on his hands. The human brain unconsiously looks for recognizable patterns. Of course now he’s shown everyone exactly what’s on his brain all the time. These are kids movies for kids to enjoy and if they ever question what one of them is about, the parents can explain it any way they want! Me personally, I have no problem with my children watching any of these movies and since I had no clue about the ‘recalls’, I still own the little mermaid and the rescuers that are ‘objectionable’.
In the last clip, the guys veiws on morality are total jackassery.

A lot of what I seen was a far stretch. A lot of what he tried to show I couldn’t make out the word before he superimposed his “idea” of what it supposedly said. Even if all this was true and Disney happen to go our of business either a new company would take over and bring it all up to 2010 standards of movies which is far worse or children would watch more of the unwholesome sitcoms and reality tv shows. I love number 10, I spent forever trying to find the satelite dish but I couldn’t find it. And I thought it was awesome how Belle is just walking with her book and blue dress. I also saw the flying carpet but for Pumba I kept staring at the pig from the scene but it just doesn’t compute in my mind how that could be Pumba, it looked like a normal pig. Or it might just be that I have to watch it on a bigger screen to see it.

Oh Dear. The last one. Beauty and the beast? Those supposed devil-horn-hand-signs that are a 'sign of evil'? I'm an animator, and I study classical animation. Holding your hands like that? Geez, that's not a sign of evil whatsoever, I've used those damn hands on a character that's feminine, snotty, careful with something or a perfectionist.
I also think the whole "*****" everywhere is propper horse*****. I've found 4 extra "*****"-es in the water in a shot of pocahontas where he only found one. Alladin, the same. People hear/see what they want to hear/see.
