The awnesr to so many new writers’ questions seems to be, “just keep writing”. The more you do it, the more you improve and the better the odds get that you’ll be published sooner or later: but people are still after that quick fix and when they don’t find it, they’d often sooner fix the blame on some conspiracy theory than on their own ability. The same sort of attitude can be seen in writers who rush towards the vanity presses: they’re convinced that Big Publishers won’t publish them and that vanity publishing is a viable alternative, but no matter how one explains it all, some people are determined not to listen.

Congratulations, Leanne, on gitetng your agent: make sure you let me know when your book is published.Gutsy, I don’t know the USA market as well as I know the UK one, but I believe that there’s little difference between the two. I’m not sure that pitching at conferences is the best way to attract an agent or editor (although if you do it well, it’s not going to hurt): as always, it’s the submission that counts most. Without intending to upset your friends, it’s more likely that their writing wasn’t just up to scratch, and that increased competitiveness wasn’t a factor at all. Sorry.

The most cmoomn misconception I have to deal with (mostly from my smaller clients) is the rate and payment. Most of them think that rates and payments should be equivalent, or close to, the only other big thing they have ever borrowed $$ for, that being their home. Then I explain how equipment lease rates and commercial lending in general are completely different from residential RE lending. I explain this by showing them corp bond rates that are often 4-6% (or more) above the Prime Lending Rate so they see that even big name companies whose names they know and products and services they buy have to pay 9 or 10% or more when they issue bonds. When I have to, I will remind them that home loans are so cheap cause everyone needs a place to live. Most businesses can still operate if their pending acquisition and lease of equipment fails.Interestingly, the lessened access to the capital and credit markets happening now has helped to minimize these questions since companies are happy for any reason to not use their own cash to get the equipment they need.

I always think of the mythbusters episode where they couldn't get static electricity to ignite a chamber basically full of gasoline vapors. If the Mythbusters can't make it blow up, there is no way I can
