Cheech & Chong’s “Up In Smoke” The opening scene when Chong’s father is yelling at him (the underrated and overlooked actor Strother Martin who also had the famous line in “Cool Hand Luke”, “What we have here is a failure to communicate”), anyhow, He yells at Chong, “YOU GET A GOD*AMN JOB BEFORE SUNDOWN, OR WE’RE SHIPPING YOU OFF TO MILITARY SCHOOL, WITH THAT GOD*AMN, FINKELSTEIN SH*T KID…….SON OF A BI*CH !! Watch it and I swear that you will laugh your head off. Another one from the same movie “Up In Smoke” : Chong to Cheech : “Hey, You Wanna Get High Man ? My favorite quote is from a rather unknown movie starring Errol Flynn entitled “Gentleman Jim” (1942). Its a biography of James J. Corbett who was the first Heavyweight Champion of the World in the sport of boxing under the “new” Marquis of Queensbury Rules and the first one to wear gloves after bare knuckle pugilism was totally banned. The famous last scene is of Corbett knocking out John L. Sullivan on Sept. 7, 1892. That evening in New Orleans (where the fight was held), a joyous celebration is taking place for him at a exquisite ballroom of a hotel. Sullivan (who was beautifully portrayed by the very underrated actor Ward Bond) walks in and looks like a man in the throes of an enormous defeat (he had the title for 10 years !!). The crowd celebrating becomes hush as Sullivan is there just to congratulate him. He and Corbett have a gentlemanly, humanly as well as tear-jerking conversation together and at the end of their conversation and mutual respect for each other, Sullivan says / quotes “Though its tough to be a good loser, its a lot more tough to be a good winner”. That’s when you break out the box of tissues and get a lump in your throat……….
