I have been a big jazz fan for along time. A few people I didn't see on the short list were Freddie Webster and Sonny Berman, both trumpet players that passed on well before 40. My favorite trumpet player, who died at age 23 of euremia was Booker Little. WOW!!! WHAT A GREAT TALENT. I have most of his recordings on vinyl, but they are hard to find. Another great artist that died young was Bobby Jasper. His records are really tough to find. A great flute player. God bless. May they all rest in peace.

I really like your list. Just have to say that Booker Little absolutely belongs on it. Listen to Out Front to understand this guy's immense talent and startling combination of vitality and maturity. He recorded that album in 1961 -- died the same year at age 23.

Wes Montgomery was 45 when he died; he lived 10 years longer than Jaco (the artist to live the longest on the list).

Having written the majority of my best music between 30 and 36 I cannot imagine how awesome Charlie Christian could have been ya know? As awesome as he was at 25. Imagine him at 40 or 50.

Great list, great response. I would add a couple of names to consider: Jimmy Blanton was on Duke Ellington's great 1940-2 band (think "Take the A-Train" and "Cotton Tail"), and his high regard is signified by that band being often referred to as the "Blanton-Webster" band. He died at 23-- yep, TB.

Chu Berry was a top tenor sax player in the '30s, right up there with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. He died of an auto accident in 1941 at the age of 33.

Scott Lafaro was the bassist for Bill Evans' famous trio from 1959-61, and may be my favorite bassist. Rather than stay in the background he had an incredible melodic sense that put the bass on a near-equal footing with the piano. Listen to "Bill Evans Trio at the Village Vanguard" for some amazing interplay. As nimble as his solos were, I just marvel at his ensemble playing. He died in a car crash at the age of 25.

(I just now noticed LaFaro's name mentioned in #41 by industwetrust)
