My grandmother was very deaf and always thought that the phrase “deep in the heart of texas” from the song was “deep in the hearts affections”

Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands, Oh, where hae ye been? The next line should read “They hae slain the Earl o’ Murray” rather than “Earl Amurray”

This is probably an alternative spelling of Moray as on Moray Firth and refers to the area of which he was the Earl.
