What about the concept of the family who moves into a house with a sketchy past? The dog picks up on strange apparitions followed by the young child who is an unhappy loner who never wanted to move. The dumb parents are the last ones to realise the house is filled with vengeful ghosts.

Ironically enough, number 8's picture has nothing to do with "ghosts", at least in a literal sense. The Shining is a psychological horror, but not a ghost horror. It's the story of madness, in Jack, in Danny, and in Wendy. Jack is insane because of his abusive tendencies and his fight against alcohol. Danny is insane because he has been abused and is now experiencing the trauma of the abusive father through symbolic dreams and hallucinations (including the two girls. Note this: The two girls in the REAL Charles Grady murder were 8 and 10, but the twins that Danny sees are NOT 8 and 10, but more likely both 8 or both 10. It could be concluded as an error, but I see it as a subtle hint that this isn't simply a ghost story). Wendy is insane because she recognizes the abuse that Danny receives, but refuses to intervene, and tries to rationalize it (why would there be a crazy lady in the hotel when everybody else is gone? Why would she believe such a stupid story? Because it's less scary than the truth: Jack tried to strangle Danny).
